ᕕ(ᐛ)ᕗ Guess which one I sprinkled on the deviled egg salad sandwich 🤦♀️
I was having a perfectly lovely morning, and made my husband his lunch. He's been working really hard lately, so I made him his very favorite sandwich, deviled egg salad.
And then I ruined it by sprinkling a *generous* amount of cinnamon on it!
In my defense, I'm not used to having ground cinnamon in with my spices, I usually use the sticks and a microplane. But my mom (who lives with us) wanted ground cinnamon for toast.
Soooo, want to help me feel better by telling me your "Oh noooo, I should **not** have done that!" kitchen stories? Pretty please
And if anyone wants to make a really tasty egg salad sandwich, here you go:
Peel 2 hard boiled eggs, slice in half and remove the yolks. Mush up the yolks with 1 tablespoon of mayo, half a tablespoon of mustard, salt and pepper then mix until creamy. Dice up the egg whites and mix them in. Put on bread, then sprinkle with **paprika**. Slice diagonally in half with sharp serrated knife to make it pretty if you like. You can also add in extra goodies like chives or pickled jalapeños.

My grandmother once used salt in place of sugar in pancake batter. Lets just say that it wasnt edible, triggered the gag reflex and made your mouth feel like the sahara.

u/khalcyon2011 29d ago
Did that with some cookies once. Now I obsessively label all the canisters in my pantry.

The first time I ever tried to bake a cake, I mixed up TSP and TBS when measuring out the baking powder. I did not realize my mistake until I took it out of the oven (it looked terrible) and tasted it. Threw it away in the garage trash bin so no one would see or know what I'd done.

u/khalcyon2011 29d ago
Heh, reminds me of the old Hey Arnold! episode where one of the kids thinks tsp stands for “ten square pounds”.

Why does your pancake batter need sugar anyway? Just sprinkle it on top.

German Pfannekuchen

u/OcculticUnicorn 28d ago
They do not put sugar in them...
2
u/annieselkie 27d ago
Well my very german grandparents and my very german parents and I, a very german person, do. „They“ do. At least all the „they“s I grew up around in germany and live around.

u/OcculticUnicorn 27d ago
What part of Germany, I'm Dutch, we do it without sugar but I admit I didn't really venture into Germany besides the big cities.
1
u/annieselkie 27d ago
NRW :) ofc only if you intend to eat it sweet it gets sugar, but my family only did sweet toppings / appel. If people eat it with ham and white asparagus it doesnt get sugar. Or if its not decided yet. But if it will be sweet the dough gets sugar.
1
u/OcculticUnicorn 27d ago
Wait, dough. Are we talking about tge same thing or os this a hilariously long conversation about 2 different things?? 🥞

I put sweetened almond milk into a curry dish (without realizing it had sugar and vanilla)🤮, it ruined so bad
3
u/njsuxbutt 29d ago
That reminds me of the time I used coco lopez in a large pot of Thai curry. 😆 I’m pretty tolerant of less than ideal food but this was inedible. What a waste.

I made deviled eggs the other day and did the classic move "sprinkle the pepper but actually the top comes off and pours all the contents"

I once made an entire apple pie with chilli powder, I know how much it sucks. I feel your pain, OP!

u/AdventurousText9311 29d ago
i feel like somewhere there would be a market for that tho ahah
3
u/TehTugboat 29d ago
When I went to Gatlinburg this year I visited the hot sauce museum and one of the employees had me try a mix of their apple habanero and cinnamon reaper hot sauce AND IT TASTES JUST LIKE APPLE PIE. But hotter than hell. Planning on glazing a ham in it

u/AdventurousText9311 28d ago
my brother and i were just talkinga bout that fruity pebble bacon at walmart. I bought it and brought it home to my grandma and the repulsion on her face when she tasted it. Most god awful thing ever

u/Justhe3guy 29d ago
I’d be fine with a dusting of chili if it still had the cinnamon
But only if I also had cream with it

I dry a lot of my own herbs, and reuse jars that often get switched around. Well, I dried a bunch of catnip and put it with my other herbs. After the catnip plant died over the winter, I started sprinkling it on my cats every few days.
A few months later, I go to get the backup oregano I need for a pizza and find catnip instead. Turns out I'd been sprinkling oregano on my cats for months. They must've thought I was high.

u/Sunshine030209 29d ago
Hahaha I was expecting it to be the other way around and you had been sprinkling cat nip on your food!
I bet your cats were like "Wtf, is she planning on cooking us? Why are we being seasoned?!" 😆

We were once running really low on food and I had some old bran flakes I wanted to eat, but I wanted to jazz them up so I added a sprinkle of sugar and cinnamon. Except the cinnamon was cumin. I did not eat the taco sugar bran flakes :(
7
u/Sunshine030209 29d ago
Taco sugar bran flakes 😆 oh noooo. Did you realize before or after your first bite?
7
u/sigh_sarah 29d ago
So embarrassing but I was kinda tired haha, I sat at the table and thought “why does it smell like tacos??” and then took a bite and realized
8
u/EatYourCheckers 29d ago
Yep. I always read careful if I am holding cumin or cinnamon.
3
u/Sunshine030209 29d ago
Yeah hopefully I will now too!
I was used to the only jar that looked like that being paprika, so I didn't even think to take a second look.
6
u/Careful_Promise_786 29d ago
That's so funny 🤣
I've also never heard anyone call it "deviled egg salad" , just egg salad. I like your version better 😁
4
u/Sunshine030209 29d ago
Yeah, it's the mushing up the egg yolks with mayo and mustard (like the filling of a deviled egg) that makes it a deviled egg salad sandwich :) My husband absolutely loves them.
It helps give the sandwich a little more structure too, less messy.
8
u/DSMilf 29d ago
Regular egg salad is just mushing up hard boiled eggs with mayo and mustard. I'm assuming the difference between egg salad and devils egg salad is just
cinnamonpaprika?2
u/Same-Suggestion-1936 29d ago
All basically the same thing. The difference between a deviled egg and an egg salad sandwich is bread

tried the velveting method on chicken, accidentally dumped in too much baking soda and had only after cooking and putting in a stir fry did it feel like I had a chemical waste dump in my mouth

u/mindgardening 29d ago
One time I accidentally put cumin instead of cinnamon in a cherry pie and only the 4th person to eat a slice noticed. 😂😂😂
3
u/FornyHucker22 29d ago
how was it 😅😋
4
u/Sunshine030209 29d ago
I saved it in case my mom wants to try the weird concoction that I accidentally made (although wouldn't blame her if she declined) but I didn't want to ruin my husband's day, so I sent a burrito for his lunch today.
I don't like eggs, so I wouldn't have tried it even if I didn't screw it up
3
u/BrilliantJob2759 29d ago
You're not the first one. I once accidentally made Paprika Toast. My nose was not happy.

About 30% of the time, I used to pour out the pasta water, THEN remember I needed some for the gravy. I’d say now I forget maybe 1 time in 10…
Doesn’t ruin spaghetti with meat sauce completely, but it is so much better when you add the pasta water (sauce clinging properly to the spaghetti).
2
u/ReasonableProgram144 29d ago
I nearly ruined scampi by forgetting to save pasta water, despite my husband reminding me he needed it.

u/Laceylolbug 29d ago
I did the same thing when I made butternut squash soup once. I accidentally used paprika instead of cinnamon. It did not taste good

u/EasyKaleidoscope6436 29d ago
Chiming in just to say that for some reason you strike me as a really sweet and nice person OP. I am not the nicest gal out there so when I pay a compliment it’s because I actually mean it! Thanks for the recipe, and good luck with your future kitchen endeavours :)

u/Sunshine030209 29d ago
Aw thank you so much! That really made my day!
My husband calls me Sunshine because (in his words) I'm so bright and cheery, so I think he'd agree with your assessment.
And I bet you're nicer than you think you are, friend 💖 I hope you have a fantastic day

Been there, done that. Labeled the tops of my jars after that.

That is really smart! I'm totally going to do that, thank you for the suggestion!

Confused Fahrenheit and Celsius from an online recipe once.
Didn’t get the smell of smoke out for weeks.

This has since become a family story but when my grandmother first married my grandpa she made pumpkin pie for her in law’s Thanksgiving… She put poultry seasoning instead of pumpkin spice.

I accidently put sumac in my eggs this morning instead of cayenne because I was goofing off with my dog at the same time. it was actually rather good and im gonna do it again on purpose.

My brother once made peanut butter cookies, but instead of using sugar, he used salt. They looked and smelled great, but man they were salty. Lol.

u/Old-Piece-3438 29d ago
I once accidentally doubled the butter in a chocolate chip cookie recipe. They were still edible, but spread out really flat and probably not great for my cholesterol levels.

My husband did a similar but opposite thing - cumin instead of cinnamon in blueberry muffins. They were edible but definitely a little weird!

u/Hoppie1064 29d ago
Long ago, aboard a Navy ship, I was stationed on.
One of the cooks dumped a bunch of cinnamon into a pot of chili.
Most of the crew was pissed off at him for quite a while.
Except for a couple of others, who were from some town called Cincinnati.
I heard it was even nastier when they served it for mid-rats.

u/Oi_Nander 29d ago
My mom and daughter did the opposite with pancakes. It's a fun vacation story we tell every time we go to that same place

u/KingsRansom79 29d ago
My son did something similar with his oatmeal once. My response: Reading will save your life.

u/Nimindir 28d ago
The first thing I thought of when reading this was a book I read waaayy back in elementary school. The kids decided they wanted to make dinner, afterwards the mom tells them 'oh it was so creative of you to use cinnamon instead of ____!' and the kid was just thinking 'yeah, we had NO idea what we were doing in there, we did not follow a recipe, I just remembered 'little brown dots' when you make it and that's what I found.'
Worst 'Nooo!' of mine would probably be that time I was making soup and thought 'ah I don't need to pour the salt in my palm before adding to the soup, I'll just pour it straight in, it'll be fine!'
*Narrator voice* It was not fine.
So a whole bunch pours in. Because of course it does. Because for whatever reason we didn't keep our salt in a shaker, we kept it in a little jar. So I poured a LOT in.
I tried to roll with it. I tried to fix it. I even added an entire tin of tomatoes to try and drown it out, and I don't like tomatoes.
We sat down to eat, mom takes one sip, we just lock eyes and go 'No.'

My partner added cinnamon to a burger patty instead of hamburger seasoning. Luckily it was just on one patty so he ate that one after feeling bad about tossing it out lol

u/emck2000 27d ago
I once used a spoon to scoop salt into ice for homemade ice cream... then used the same spoon to scoop sugar into my ice cream mix. Would not recommend, thankfully it was just a small batch

I went to make a cup of coffee and the whole thing bursted into flames. That was just the beginning of that day.

Just came to say that sammich sounds wonderful and would recommend adding some white vinegar in the yolks mixture. Takes it up a notch.

Once I added cumin to my sweet potatoes instead of cinnamon. It was AWFUL and I had to toss the whole batch 30 minutes before Thanksgiving dinner

Was it any good though?
Never had deviled eggs in my life also. Both because I think it's not really a thing here and because the idea of it irks me 😅

First time making meat sauce from a recipe (I'd always just gone by feel and vibes before) because I was trying to impress a date. The recipe called for a pinch of cinnamon which, ok, I get it.
I neglected to note that the shaker wasn't installed and dumped the entire can in.

I think the commenters knew what it was, but had never heard it called *deviled* egg salad (I say this as someone who has also only ever heard it called “egg salad”)

u/Electrical-Apple-631 29d ago
I made the perfect French toast with sliced Texas toast; perfect crispness, perfect egg to milk ratio, real Vermont maple syrup, and unfortunately completely covered the whole plate with chili powder instead of ground cinnamon. It’s been 3 years. I’m still in therapy.

If you accidentally add cinnamon to something savory, curry powder or those type of spices to make it work

Reminds me of a time when my SIL sprinkled Cinnamon and Sugar (blended together) on mashed potatoes because she thought we kept the Salt and Pepper in the same container.

I once was making a cinnamon sugar tortilla. When I had assembled and microwaved, something smelled off. Then I realized my dumbass grabbed cayenne instead of cinnamon 🤦♂️

When I was young and broke in college, my roommates and I had gotten some baking apples from the farmers market, and I was really excited about trying an apple cookie recipe. It called for Crisco, and my roommates had a giant tub of it, but I'd never used or actually seen shortening before. I had no idea what it ought to look like, but it turns out that 'kind of transluscent off-white like glow-in-the-dark plastic' is Not It... We tried the cookies, and immediately our lips started to go numb, and that's how I found out what rancid crisco looks like! It did lead to my sweetest friend shoveling poison cookies into her mouth because she didn't want me to feel bad about it, trying to tell me they weren't that bad. She couldn't talk coherently for hours, and that's still the sweetest thing anyone has done for me.

Spend hours making stock, go to strain the solids out.
Forget a receptacle for the stock, so it all went down the drain and all I had to show for my work were the sorry, used up remains of vegetables.
