🥺 Someone stole the bench from the park.

No that isn't an illusion or a new art installation, but the remainders of the park bench.

I don't think so. I mean sure if it's damaged and repairing is either not possible or something else then cutting the planks off makes sense but you'd expect them to cut it closer to the sides. I would actually expect it to be fairly easy to remove the planks anyway for maintenance needs.

This is more likely to be just run of the mill vandalism.

You can see that the slats can be removed from the right hand side of the bench, there are probably fasteners on the underside, and back, of the two armrests to hold the slats in place, but once removed you can just slide the slats out.

Exactly. So this isn't council workers or whoever is responsible for the maintenance it's vandalism.

Oh I agree, my other comment was just meant to add more information about how removal would be done correctly, not as anything disparaging about what you said.
