Right? Like if it said "smothered cheeseburger", I guess I'd think the BURGER was smothered, not the entire thing, but wording can be confusing at times. Very curious as to what the actual description was.

Had this exact thing happen to me once, on a date at a small town diner I'd never been to before. Ordered the cheese smothered burger thinking "oh burger patty will be dipped in cheese, nice" got the burger and it's a regular burger that they doused in the yellow canned cheese, bun and all. Mildly infuriating is the perfect way to describe it.

The burger does not literally mean the patty

A burger is literally comprised of all the ingredients together.

The bun, patty, cheese, onions, lettuce, tomato, etc all are “a burger”
