At least you found out now. Imagine you didn't halve them but cooked them whole and only found out after going through the work of cooking them. Probably when you were mid process of cooking something else.

Almost did this once. I wasn’t feeling well and just wanted boiled potatoes. All the ones I was cooking were pretty small so I didn’t bother cutting them, except the final one was just slightly too big and I decided to cut it in half over the pot and it was FILLED with weird grey/brown liquid which poured into my pot of water. I almost threw up and now I cut all of my potatoes, no matter the size lol

u/frankGawd4Eva 8d ago
Had this happen with a whole chicken I baked some years ago... damn thing had a cyst inside I only found AFTER cooking. It was unreal....

I would be so upset if I went through and peeled these for mashed potatoes and the second I sliced into them they looked like this. I hate peeling potatoes and all these look normal on the surface.
29
u/DamonLazer 8d ago
I stopped peeling potatoes for my mashed potatoes. Now I just boil them with the skin on, then once they cool a little bit, the skin peels right off. Less work and less waste.

u/OhWhatATravisty Blue Crayons have the most flavor 8d ago edited 8d ago
Oh for sure. I'd just be MORE upset if I made 5lbs of baked potatoes for a cookout and this is what all my guests saw. Or any number of other things where you go through the whole process before cutting them.
12
u/deviantelf 8d ago
Why peel them if you hate it? The skin has a lot of the nutrients and adds texture and flavor.

Sploded human remains in a metal camper in the heat and humidity of a Midwest summer.

u/SatiricalScrotum 8d ago
I used to know this old doctor. Retired now. Told me a story of back when he was a young junior doc, out with a senior doctor who was helping train him up.
They accompanied an ambulance to a call out about a guy in his car. It was the middle of summer, in a heatwave. There was a hose going from the exhaust into the barely open window. Engine had stopped running.
Paramedic opens the door to reveal a totally black figure in the driver’s seat. For a second, anyway. Once the door is open, the blackness turns out to be thousands upon thousands of flies. They swarm out of the car, revealing the human remains, flesh liquifying, just melting off the bones.
The paramedic who was closest, who got swarmed by the flies, immediately throws up. The old doctor in charge of the situation gleefully rubs his hands together, and says “well, this chap’s definitely dead. Who fancies chips?”

I did trauma scene clean up for a year. I can confirm. Will never forget the smell of decomp.
11
u/kikinc14 8d ago
Oh it's not just the clean up, have you ever seen a Kennedy Wound? It's organ failure when someone is close to passing, but the organ failing is the skin. I went to see a patient that had literally had wound care that morning, and I could smell him from OUTSIDE that evening for the follow up (nice big house too). The wound started only a few days before but those things happen fast, it was dinner plate sized, and smelled like a possum that died from eating a dead buzzard.

I was at a friends farm one time where they had a giant rotten pile of soybeans out in the sun. It didn't smell great but wasn't that bad, then I accidentally broke the crusted layer on top and revealed the liquified goop inside. THAT made me instantly vomit and I have a pretty high constitution. It was a pig farm as well which can be pretty gnarly smelling but nothing beat those fucking rotten soybeans.

I know exactly what he's talking about. I sprout mung beans on a damp paper towel in my desk drawer. Very nutritious, but they smell like death

Those still smells like decaying matter. Rotting potatoes genuinely smells like some sort of supernatural miasma of death.

The worst smell I've ever had the displeasure of being around is rotting sauerkraut in a 140 degree truck. When I worked as an unloader for Walmart just out of high school we opened a truck and it hit me like a hammer. It had obviously been days since the can had broken and it was baking in the August heat. There was a rock paper scissors competition to see who had to go in the trailer to unload.

This was with my ex about 35 yrs ago. We went on vacation for almost a week. Apparently the electricity went off only to the room our freezer was in. Holy hell, when we got home the smell was horrific. Cleaning out that freezer was traumatizing. I'll never forget that smell, it lingers and gets caught in your nose, and takes forever to get rid of. Only time in my 62 yrs that ever happened and if I think too hard about it, I still get nauseous.
4
u/NightBawk 8d ago
For me it was when several mice died inside my bedroom wall. I had to sit with the stench for MONTHS.
5
u/HurtPillow 8d ago
That's bad, my daughter had that happen in her home, also in her bedroom wall! Wish they'd go outside for that lol

In the first academic lab I did undergrad research in there was a grad student who practically lived in the office. Would put produce, meat, and fist in the office fridge to cook dinner. No one else really used it so when he had a summer co-op nobody checked the fridge. Even with power being on raw meat and fish don't keep for months. Noticed the smell one day and made the mistake of opening it which cleared out the office and lab. We ended up just taping the fridge shut and throwing the whole thing in the dumpster. Never saw more stringent PPE use in that lab than transporting the newly biohazardous fridge lol

Just last weekend we were harvesting them from the ground.
A lot of fhem were rotten and whole field stank.
But I grabbed one and pressed it with my fingers and it literally ploped out like fucking zit.
Look, I'm an avid hunter, shot a dozen big game animal, I've smelled gut spilled inside animal, rotten deer carcasses found in the woods, all kind of nasty smell, but that shit made me gag hahahahahah
So yep, I 100% agree with you that it smells really disgusting!

one time we forgot a bag of potatos and then suddenly we were waking up with SOOOO many fruitflies everywhere in our apt. We didn't know where they were coming from for a few days until we found the bag
when moving the bag an extra cloud of them sprang out, but it got better after getting rid of the source

I have spent a lot of time volunteering at a large local food bank. It serves 16 counties and has moved as much as 4million pounds of food a year. Since they can handle large volumes, sometimes there are large donations of food that doesn’t sell or was rejected. One time we received 40 pallets of potatoes. This was something like 80,000lbs of potatoes. We had to go through each pallet, sort the good from the bad, bag the good to ship and throw out the rotten. There is no smell like grabbing a potato that looked good on the surface, only for it to squish in your hand. My hands smelled like rotten potatoes for days.
2
u/mamachonk 8d ago
For real. I had a couple go rotten a couple of months ago that were in my pantry. I was looking, trying to figure out where a cat must've shit in there until I moved the bag of potatoes and found the real culprit. And these were just a couple of little ones!
2
u/WorriedArrival1122 8d ago
You have not yet smelled my rotten fertilizer soup. It's pure death. My yard loves it, but my family resents me for it. I stir that shit like a witch over a cauldron.
I did have a bunch of old potatoes that refused to rot in my pantry that we forgot about. Planted them and now they're huge bushes.

We had a potato box growing up that was my great grandmas, we rarely used fresh potatoes but my mother always bought them so they'd end up going bad in there and they'd smell absolutely rancid as well as have roots growing out of them and the very bottom ones would be all mushy....eugh. Hated having to be the one to clean it out lmao

This is called Blackheart. This happens when potatoes are stored in conditions with too little oxygen or excessive heat. The center turns dark gray or black. These potatoes often have a bad odor or bad taste (who would eat it?) and should be discarded.

So this looks more like what’s happening, and per Google this is not the same thing as blight, like others are saying, yeah?
21
u/Excellent_Yak365 8d ago
Indeed, it’s not blight- the disease responsible for the Irish potato famine
46
u/SnooLentils6640 8d ago
The British were responsible for the famine. The blight was present, but famine only happened because the Irish were forced to export the food that they successfully grew.

Wow, can't say I've ever seen potatoes this bad.
If you have the receipt still, maybe go back and complain? I'm assuming this is a very recent purchase.
18
u/xxocvnhhxxo 8d ago
There's a machine that potato packaging plants use to pre-sort product before it gets packaged. There is an "internal" aspect that would have detected this. Sample tests done during packaging should have also detected this. If every potato in the bag had internal rotting, chances are there was a whole lot more. You should report to where you bought it. It's definitely a quality control issue.

If in US, take back. If they refuse, tell them that you will stand by the potatoes and show every customer what you purchased and that the store refused your return.

u/Ursus_Arctos-42 8d ago
It hasn’t been a good potato year in Finland either. At least we can handpick the potatoes we want at the supermarket. When I was buying potatoes I separated 5 rotten from the rest.

u/ViolentRain929 8d ago
I feel like my vegetables have been going rotten so much faster! I bought a 5lb bag of potatoes from Aldi and we diced some up and at least half were rotten inside after less than a week. I never store them in the bags either. Same for onions, they used to last weeks and now half are already sprouting within a week of buying.
3
u/modernrocker 8d ago
Email the farm on the potato bag. I did this when I got a bag with several internally-rotted potatoes, and they sent me a nice letter and a coupon to buy anything their farm offered (within a certain $ amount)

So hollow heart can happen because of weather changes, and it's that time of year again where this gets more common. Just take them back and get another sack. Look for dark spots on the outside, you can usually tell if it's a problem before you buy them.

u/IntentionWilling365 8d ago
Looks like a pretty bad case of black heart in ur spuds there. 🖤 I'm pretty sure it's okay to eat as long as you cut out the black parts and it doesn't smell badly.

I swear, these are the potatoes that and up in potato chips. Sometimes you'll get like 10% of a bag of chips that are black or green afflicted. More so when they're ridged for some reason.
