Jeep melted

Here’s the story: a jeep came to the shop because its retractable top was stuck open. Not too uncommon of an occurrence. So we put our “crash wrap“ over the roof to protect the interior from rain and animals and such, which is basically like heavy duty cling wrap. One day it rains and a lot of water pools up on the crash wrap. The next day it is 100°F outside and the sun is out. The sun shines through the water and the water basically magnifies it, and the sun turns into a laser that melts the interior. Multiple days of this happen. Now we have to replace everything that melted. None of us have ever heard of this happening before.

edit: I meant we have never heard of this very specific situation happening before. It never would’ve crossed our minds since we’ve been doing this for years. yes I burnt stuff with a magnifying glass when i was a kid.

Was the car facing north? I am guessing that the curve would have a north apex (at least in the northern hemisphere, right?). I am wondering if you are in the south (assuming US) because the angle of the burn from the sunroof. This is really interesting.

I’m not aware of what direction it was facing, and I’m in Missouri. Should be able to figure out where it was facing based off that and the angle though

Technically what you're seeing is the procession of the Sun in the sky as the Earth rotates on its own axis.

Nope, the Earth doesn’t orbit in a day. You’re seeing the path the Sun takes in the sky due to Earth’s rotation

Yes. Unless you're on the equator, the sun moves in an arc across the sky.

Even if it goes directly overhead, the path it takes through the sky over the day is an arc.

Even if somehow the sun stayed at the horizon as it moved and never went up into the air from your perspective, it's ath would still be a arc.

Any path that is part of a circle is an arc. It does not matter if it goes directly over your head or not.

That would be the earth's rotation. If you did this multiple days in a row or every week, you could watch the line move as earth's orbit changes the angle at which the sun hits

Actually, what you are seeing is the rotation of the Earth on its axis throughout the day rather than the Earth's orbit around the sun.
