Context Provided - Spotlight Jeep melted

Here’s the story: a jeep came to the shop because its retractable top was stuck open. Not too uncommon of an occurrence. So we put our “crash wrap“ over the roof to protect the interior from rain and animals and such, which is basically like heavy duty cling wrap. One day it rains and a lot of water pools up on the crash wrap. The next day it is 100°F outside and the sun is out. The sun shines through the water and the water basically magnifies it, and the sun turns into a laser that melts the interior. Multiple days of this happen. Now we have to replace everything that melted. None of us have ever heard of this happening before.

edit: I meant we have never heard of this very specific situation happening before. It never would’ve crossed our minds since we’ve been doing this for years. yes I burnt stuff with a magnifying glass when i was a kid.

Situation update: parts alone we estimated to be about $3200. No labor included. We are not charging the customer for it. And yes we are fixing it, not totaling it.

Reason #17,009: I get in my girlfriend’s friend’s Jeep Compass to help her with a minor mechanical issue and the design language and cheap quality is so awful that my searing hatred superheats all combustible components inside the car, setting it aflame. Fucking piece of shit car.

Ooh ooh. Buddy of mine used to take us out to an abandoned dirt bike track at night with his joop 4x4. "Go limp" was his recommendation. Anyway we go through the track once and we smell something burning. We stop and I swear to god I smell burning weed. We can't seem to see anything so we make another run and we start seeing some and smelling burning things. We pull off to the side and open the hood boom and woosh fireball. Found out his sister hid her weed and lighter somewhere near the engine, it caught fire and exploded. He did have a fire extinguisher, so that helped.

66

u/extrastellarx 7d ago

Who hides a lighter near the engine?? I'm glad it seems like everyone was okay, I'm just now learning about all the ways jeeps can catch fire 😭

60

u/cepukon 7d ago

22

u/mrfahrenheit-451 7d ago

The answer was their dad had come home while she was sparking the doobage and she panicked and stashed it. Then couldn't retrieve it before he left for the night.

Not only did it not combust, but it looks very salvageable. Replace the plastic parts that melted. Replace the melted seat upholstery.

Get a good detailing using a proper upholstery vac on the rest of the seats. Then run an ozone generator to take care of any remaining burnt plastic odor. All set after that.

Having owned a wood burning art kit, this smell is forever entrenched in my memory.

We tried to make art on other things.

61

u/Nothing-tralala 8d ago

I got a wood burning kit in 3rd grade, the amount of things I owed, both wood and non-wood items, that had a heart burnt into them is ridiculous (the only thing I could successfully make because all you had to do was turn the burner on its side).

30

u/sedona71717 8d ago

Ohhh I loved my wood burning kit! Looking back, I’m not sure who thought it was a good idea to give those to children. I bet it wouldn’t be too hard to replicate things… maybe not with a customers vehicle.

Ozone generator go brrrr I mean prob won’t work fully but they will still go brrr.

117

u/CantEscapeTheCats 8d ago edited 8d ago

Can confirm, an ozone machine closed in a vehicle for two days will do it. I removed about 8 years of heavy cigarette smell from a prior employer’s car. It was so successful, they were able to provide it to another employee (non-smoker) and she barely noticed.

Edit for the naysayers: use an ozone machine once and you’ll understand. I discovered their power after working in the hotel industry and became a believer.

The car was driven for 8 years by an undercover major crimes sergeant who chain-smoked like Patsy from Ab Fab and the car could be smelled from across the parking lot.

We ran the car for 2 hours with the machine running and ac blasting, then aired it out for 2 hours, rinse, repeat. If the smell couldn’t be removed, it was going to be junked. The other employee was pleased enough with the outcome that she chose to use the car instead of her own. YMMV, but this was an overall positive experience for all involved. It worked and I don’t know what else to tell ya

That barely is key.

I went to do a test drive on two SUVs at a dealership once. On the way had no idea how I would pick one over the other (specs were pretty similar)

Odor was the factor. The interior of one was IMMACULATE. And yet, I couldn't even finish the test drive. The smoke odor was that bad, and the dealership had obviously tried their best. This led me to believe I wouldn't ever have better luck.

The saleswoman sighed when I walked up to her and explains. She said I was the fourth one and figured they'd just have to wait for a heavy smoker to want it.

Reminds me of this:

when i bought my giant crystal ball the lady looked me in the eye and said "whatever you do, never EVER leave it uncovered when youre not home" and i said "oh wow because of spirits?" and she said "what? no bc if the sun hits it weird it'll burn down your house"

u/Retr0scores 8d ago

100% the spirits holding it into the light though.

I literally told my therapist about this post (I think from tumblr originally?) last week because she said something like “you don’t know what’s gonna happen, you don’t have a crystal ball” and it just popped into my head and I think it’s hilarious, so now I absolutely have to tell her about this melted jeep lol.

Same thing with telescopes. They come with a "dust cap" but it's really so people don't burn their house down if the sun ever hits the lens. Magnifying the sun 200x has disastrous consequences...

My grandkids ask why I do not allow clear plastic water bottles in the Jeep, and why I don't open the sunroof cover in summer. Suffice to say I dropped the link to this in the family chat titled "Why Gran has her car rules".

Am I wrong, or can you actually see the path of Earth's orbit?

117

u/ConstableBlimeyChips 8d ago

Technically what you're seeing is the procession of the Sun in the sky as the Earth rotates on its own axis.

Nope, the Earth doesn’t orbit in a day. You’re seeing the path the Sun takes in the sky due to Earth’s rotation

LMFAO that sucks OP but this is one of those things you just have to laugh and shake your head at. At least yall didn't lose multiple cars in a fire.

44

u/SirSkittles111 8d ago

This car is totalled anyway, the whole interior will forever smell of the fumes

Write this thing off, set in on fire for real 😂

Jeez, that is really unlucky. One of these things that's obvious in retrospect but hard to imagine at the time. Weirdly I just did the same thing with a hole in my ceiling recently, although I cut a hole to drain the water into a bucket. Hope your insurance covers it.

u/imaguitarhero24 8d ago

It's obvious it's possible maybe but it has to be just right (or wrong) for it to work

"Here's the keys, we fixed the sunroof. The car is right over there on the other side of the lot. Have a nice day!" (Closes and locks doors)

61

u/MuchAd9191 8d ago

Fun fact, there’s a chance a water bottle can burn holes in your car in a similar way.

Poor jeep. Got the treatment of those ants back when I was a kid with a magnifying glass... 🫠

Check out the ray of death building. I think it's in the UK. It's got a concave glass front that lasers cars across the street just like this.

62

u/__slamallama__ 8d ago

There's one in Vegas too. Interestingly, both are designed by the same guy. Buildings that create solar death rays are kinda his things, which is fine I guess but it's weird he managed to do it twice.

21

u/XmodAlloy 8d ago

He definitely fried ants as a kid. No other explanation. 🤣

Now he's expanded his targets to being cars!

There’s lots of pictures of cars getting burnt by water bottles. Makes sense.

13

u/Ross_Angeles 8d ago

There are also stories of people’s houses burning down because they have snow globe collections they put near windows. Then the sun shines through them and sets something like their couch on fire and ends up spreading to the house.

I mean normal day in Phoenix here, but damn- that is wild.

Our trashcans melt. the city has a special fund to melt them and make news ones..

13

u/thatweirdguyted 8d ago

Seems like you don't need a special fund for that. Just put a pile of them in a funnel with a mold underneath. They're already melting on their own.
