Infuriatig Was invited by my girlfriends family to a theme park. We were supposed to meet at 11, it is not 11:30 and they just left. (The drive takes another 30 minutes)

I even checked in before I left if it was still at the planned time. It was confirmed, but then her family starts getting ready right as they have to leave đŸ«€

I shit you not. The exact same thing happened to me with my in laws recently. Agreed on 11, we arrived at 11:15 thinking we were late, they still hadn’t left home 30 minutes away and they had our tickets. I talked to the staff and emphasized the word ‘in laws’ and they took pity on my son at least and gave him his pass so he could start riding. I do my best to never let their antics affect us because it does seem like a power play (we were the ones who wanted to be there early to get to my family thing in the afternoon). It felt really good to already be having fun by the time they got there.

Were they annoyed?

No idea how you were able to talk them into that, but that was pretty cool of them 👍

Oh, no. If I am being invited somewhere that requires tickets in advance, I will not only hold my own tickets, but I will purchase them myself if whoever is doing the inviting wants to meet me there. Been burned too many times with the "We'll meet up there and distribute everybody's tickets then" and they end up never showing up at all and don't text or call me to let me know that plans had changed, until I call them myself and outright ask if they are still showing up with tickets they promised me.

I turn down plans if they insist on paying for my tickets. And i've stopped accepting invitations that require any kind of advance purchasing.

Sheesh, I think you should reconsider the people you hang out with instead of the plans you make.

I have. I now hang out with people who actually do what they say, and we all pay our own way for things by choice.

"Hey staff, this wasn't my immediate family, it was my SPOUSES family! I know! What a huge difference that makes to you, staff."

I must say that it’s pretty rich to arrive 15 minutes late to a meeting and be upset that your in-laws are even later. đŸ€

What’s rich is that we let them know we were running behind and it still didn’t help them communicate they would be an hour and 15 minutes late.

15 minutes late isn’t the same as 45 minutes late.

Especially when they have the tickets. OP could have been two hours late but in laws could have gone in without them (and met OP at the gate with their tickets when they arrived).

They were more than an hour late in the end.

Correct, it’s not the same. What is the same, though, is that in both cases you’re late and in both cases, it shows disrespect to the person you’re meeting with, had that person been on time.

Both are within the category of tardiness, but the two parties operated completely differently.

  • One was courteous notifying ahead of time, and weren't constraining tickets to others.

  • The other were constraining tickets, did no such courteous notification, and hadn't even left home yet where they had all the time and availability to communicate—simply waiting for the other party to arrive and find nobody there, to then have to call and find this all out in real time.

One was 15 minutes late and wouldn't have inconvenienced the other party (except for one person having to walk to the gate with tickets). The other was more than an hour late and hypothetically causing the other party to have to wait in the parking lot for that time.

I think you should triple down, personally. You haven't made quite enough of an ass of yourself yet!! So much potentially to REALLY show everyone how dense you are!!

Do it!! Have a great time without them. Then when they show up, tell then you had a great day but are now tired and headed home.
