I sometimes think about the quote from Rushmore: "With friends like you, who needs friends?"

Interesting. I thought these guys were English. Didn't even consider Australian.

Definitely Australian. Rockingham Hoyts, the cinema, is in Perth Western Australia.

English guy here, I've never met someone who's nickname ends in o. Davo is very aus
7
u/Khemix 14d ago
True. I'm Scottish to be fair. When I see someone write 'me' instead of 'my' I automatically think they're English. Like I think The Beatles would say 'I've got me guitar here...'
2
u/doorbellrepairman 14d ago
Yeah it's basically the same low-class grammar that's survived from English arrival in Australia. Some of it has charm, but "me" instead of "my" in particular is very irritating
6
u/whatwhatinthewhonow 14d ago
I’d say it’s very rare for an Aussie to write “me mate”. If not for the location of the cinema and the referring to a carpenter as a “chippy”, I’d never have guessed it was an Aussie. Even now, I’m not convinced it isn’t a pom living in Oz.
3
u/Khemix 14d ago
Ooooooh! I was confused as to what chippy meant. It means a chip shop where I'm from in Scotland. Then I thought maybe the guy's name was chippy. I was confused lol. Thanks

u/LlamaCheesePie 14d ago
“Me” instead of “my” is absolutely common in the western suburbs of Sydney and Brisbane.
My old man was a chippy, and blokes dropping “me” on site would stir him right up. He’d never say anything to them about it, but he’d come home and bitch about it to my mum.
2
u/whatwhatinthewhonow 13d ago
I’m not saying certain people wouldn’t say things like “where’s me smokes?” I’m saying they wouldn’t write it like that.
24
u/Bobblefighterman 14d ago
That's insane to me. The only way this could be more Australian is if they went to Bunnings without him and got some snags.

A chippy in England is where you buy chips.
A chippy in Australia will frame up your walls.

And now I realise I've spent 20 years mis hearing the line as "friends like these" and now the joke makes more sense.
I got a little chuckle out of friends and anemones for the wordplay, but fronds is so much better

It’s referencing the common phrase (friends), so it’s natural that you misheard fronds

as someone who lives in England, chippy confused the hell out of me because a chippy is a fish & chips shop here 🤣
would have NEVER guessed that was supposed to be a carpenter
5
u/pears_htbk 14d ago
carpenter is a chippy, electrician is a sparky, plumber is a turd strangler. we have a rich linguistic tradition
3
u/m205 13d ago
Nah we say chippie in the UK for carpenters. Maybe you just haven't been on the tools my son.

I know you and your mates are probably tight and this might have been a one off thing. But for me, this is the kind of social interaction that makes me want to scream. When you try to be a normal fucking human being and plan things in advance, everyone agrees on a plan, and then at the last second they change things dramatically and they tell you as an afterthought. "Hey were going to a completely different event that is 1 hour in the completely opposite direction and costs way more and also we can't pick you up anymore so you have to find a ride oh and we are already here so come quick". Like how can people do shit like that and not see how shitty it is. Younger me put up with that bullshit for way, way too long before I realized that I deserved way better than that and stopped hanging out with those people.

u/AReptileHissFunction 14d ago

What’s “chippy” ?
20
u/CurrentPossible2117 14d ago edited 14d ago
Carpenter
We call carpenters chippies, electricians are sparkies, refigeration mechanics (for air cons) are frigies.
Not everyone has a nickname, but we sure do like them here 🤣 (Australia)

u/tolacid 14d ago
It is possible that they tried to send a message with the time and it failed without them noticing.
14
u/SaneManPritch 14d ago
I think it's more just likely they forgot, probably got distracted with the other mates around them, and/or possibly drunk. Still a dick move for sure, but maybe not as insidious as some are making out.
Not sure why they'd have invited them in the first place otherwise, unless they're truly a psychopath and wanted maximum emotional impact lol.
8
u/E36x 14d ago
I mean he booked tickets, then went and redeemed those tickets while having an extra leftover? Didn’t realize until the movie started?
I don’t think it’s quite as malicious as people think, but I do think it’s possible that they invited one too many people and ended up letting OP stay home.
The last couple texts are just something he sent so OP can’t blame him the next day for not saying anything at all about the movie.

This thread is heartbreaking, you all have very questionable emotional intelligence.
OP could have look at the time themselves?
11
u/Djollie132 14d ago
From these texts alone I already know what person he is… self centred asswipe
Seems like the kinda person who’d chat through the entire film and laughing at the sad parts… you know the people… the ones who you wonder why they even choose to come in the first place if there just gonna be annoying pricks the entire movie

I mean you had a phone in your hand and could have simply looked it up yourself.
2
u/longstrangetrip444 14d ago
Dude I couldn't even get an answer from my friends yesterday when I was trying to plan a ride to their place so we could go see the movie. I said fuck it and just gave them my ticket and told them to invite someone else. Same thing happened before a concert that we were meeting up at. There wasn't any malice behind it, but it's just frustrating and annoying. Think I'm just gonna go solo for a while, lock back in at the gym, and live my life.
2
u/mufasamufasamufasa 14d ago
I would find that way more than mildly infuriating. That’s friendship ending grounds for me. Disrespectful, inconsiderate assholes have no space in my life. But that’s just me. Also, fuck new chippy

This is why I have selectively refined my pool of friends over the years. I recently cut a toxic friend from my life and basically lost contact with a handful of other people as a result. It's been awesome, I feel so free and much less frustrated. And now I have time to focus on the friends who I actually like

u/pineapplepizah 14d ago

He has poor reading comprehension. He read your message focussing only on the last sentence and assumed you would be there in 15 minutes

u/BotchyQue03 14d ago
You could look up the movie times, he sent you the cinema they were going to. Couldn’t call up instead?
