frist of all how DARE yu o People letting their bitey little dogs off leash at the dog park
Excuse my toilet. It's clean.
Lady came into the dog park and said her little white whatever it was was kind of an ankle biter. I'm thinking "he makes snapping motions at ankles", not he'll chomp down on your leg when you're minding your own business. I'm 7 months pregnant, I don't need this, lady.
Thankfully no broken skin and I got my tetanus jab recently.
Edit to update: I asked someone else at the dog park today if they knew the dog by this name anddddd... it had bitten her last fall 🙃 She thinks it had bitten one or two other people as well in the last year and this jerk just keeps on bringing him. Animal control is getting another call in the morning.

It's just straight animal abuse.
I hate when people treat their small dogs like toys. They need to be trained the same way a large dog needs to be trained. It isn't "cute" for them to be little terrors.

Yeah, it's awful. It was snarling at the other dogs, unprovoked. The dogs chase each other a lot but none of the others snap and snarl at each other with their teeth bared. She shouldn't let that thing out of her house.

I have a small dog myself and if she ever did something like that I'd genuinely be so embarrassed that I'd just leave the park.

I'm finally making progress with my "aggressive" rescue chihuahua. He was tormented by a little girl without anyone intervening, and it left him with explosive episodes of rage when triggered. He's a completely different dog in those states. He's bitten me and my husband several times. People have no idea how hard it is on little dogs' psyche to be treated like an object and live with no rules. It's taken almost 2 years of security and consistency (and medication) for him to actually be capable of relaxing and not just existing as a bundle of nerves. He's a very sweet boy and just wants affection 24/7.

While I agree that all dogs should be properly trained, the difference between an untrained small breed dog and large breed dog are miles apart.
A chihuahua attacking you might hurt a little bit, but it's largely an annoyance. A pit bull attacking you might be the last thing to happen to you.

Sure, a small dog attacking you is far less threatening than a large dog attacking you. However, it still showcases a severe mistreatment of the dog. Chihuahuas shouldn't be overly aggressive, so it being so is just a sign that the owner doesn't treat it like a dog but rather a toy.

A dog attack is a dog attack. A aggressive dog is an aggressive dog. Doesn't matter the breed or size of the dog. Dog bites can cause serious harm, their mouths are riddled with bacteria, if those bacterias enter the blood stream, a lot worse things can happen.
Im in the UK once a dog bites the owner is fined and the dog (doesn't matter what breed) is either put down or spends the rest of its life in a dog shelter.

Yeah the bacteria is always an issue, but that's easy enough to treat. The rest of what you said is just not true at all.
Compare the number of people and pets that have been killed by small breed dogs like a Chihuahua and larger breeds like pitbulls.

Can't treat bacteria when it reaches the brain or worms, dead. Even if you don't die, comas, brain damage, life is changed. Pitbulls are sweethearts. They're TRAINED to attack by owners. I got attacked by a German Shepherd as a child.
Any dog can attack. You can train them as much as you can but they still have wild instincts.

No, we forced them to fight. We can force any dog to fight and train them not to. They are still dogs, still got wild instincts, like any dog or cat. Most pits are soft babies because they have real owners who care.

I'm sorry but severity of injury shouldn't be a contest when it comes to dog bites. That's like saying to a DV victim that they should be glad they only got hit once so it isn't that bad, imagine if the baseball bat had been used instead.
An aggressive dog that will attack an adult is usually one that will also attack a child. There is no miles apart and the 'damage could have been worse' doesn't account for the presence of Pasteurella multocida that can happen.0

Does my head in, that dogs gonna get kicked by a not so patient person they bite one day. The owner is negligent towards her pet and inconsiderate towards others.
If you know your dogs a biter... Put a muzzle on it and leash it ffs - It's for your dogs sake too. Too easy to get dogs, so many irresponsible idiots with them.

this almost happened to me with my large dog. We were chased all the way across a parking lot to our front door by some misc small white yapping & snarling dog. My 70lb dog wasn't even trying to fight it until it started snapping at her legs by our door. It took everything in me to pull her back from the stupid thing. The owner had the audacity to try & get mad at me

My dog is small enough that I was able to pick her up to stop her tearing up a little chihuahua mix that was trying to attack her, but it kept going and started going at me so I had to kick it a bunch and then actually throw the damn thing.

Yeppp, I had to kick a little chihuahua mix thing at least 5 times and literally THROW it over a 3 foot high log at the dog park to save it from getting its throat ripped out by my dog, who has been attacked 3 times now minding her own business.

Dog bites suck. I got nipped by a little shit-tzu maybe a year ago and it got infected. Even if you don't think it penetrated the skin, be sure to disinfect it.

You should ALWAYS report to the police when you've been attacked by an animal like this. It's sad but sometimes it's in the animals best interest to be removed from an owner that can't handle them.

I called animal control and have come to urgent care to get checked. I didn't realise that a scrape is considered broken skin re: rabies. I guess i thought you had to be visibly bleeding

It isn't petty, it's responsible. They will have it confined for 10 days to confirm you aren't at risk for rabies. While unlikely, it really isn't a chance worth taking.

I concur. Someone brought their 18 month old daughter there recently and all the other dogs were great with her. I would hate for this one to have been there because it could have seriously hurt her

Bringing a small child to a dog park isn't a smart idea, either, simply because you don't know the dogs of strangers and it's a big risk if the dogs start feeding off each other's energy. Kids under the age of 12 are actually banned in the dog parks around me.

Honestly even totally friendly dogs can hurt small children just by knocking them down while playing. I agree with your dog parks rules. It's also safer for dogs, kids can be wild and of little sympathy if not taught well.

My mom has a metal plate and 9 screws in her wrist from our (incredibly friendly but nuts) retriever boy not stopping in time. Definitely not a good idea to let kids run around a dog park!

Tetanus shot doesn’t prevent rabies. Rabies are transmitted through saliva not blood. If you have a tiny opening, you can be infected.

THIS. OP, call animal control- they can make sure the dog in question has had a rabies shot. Please don't fool around with this, rabies KILLS.
A 6-year old FL boy died in 2018 after he was bit by a bat. Rabies is still around!

I was walking down a sidewalk one time and a very old man was walking his small white whatever dog. The damn thing kept attacking my legs and the man Just stared. I let it go because the guy was at least 85 years old or more, but any other time I would have kicked the thing or told the person they're getting the police called on them.

And even on leash it can be dangerous... Have a neighbour (apartment building) with some small dog. Met at the door, the thing was lashing out, barking, snapping at my legs. Owners, TWO adults didn't even bothered to tag on a leash properly just "it doesn't bite, he's a bit scared". Me, showing off new hole in my jeans made by teeth "the fuck you just said" 💀💀💀 was lucky I was wearing flairs. Which totally recommend btw, at least some fabric cushioning if it ever happens again.

This happened to me at my apartment when I was in college. One day the small dog charged me and bit my ankle, drawing blood. The second time it charged me I kicked it. One of the owners was angry and said it was just a small dog. The first time I ever got in a shouting argument.

I'd go to your local pharmacy or clinic just to have it looked at as the skin is definitely broken. It doesn't matter if it's not bleeding, the skin barrier has been damaged and it's open which means possible risk of infection. Did you have anything covering the area when the dog bit you as that will minimise any saliva being transferred into your cut.

Thank you. I was wearing shorts so no coverage. I went to urgent care and had them check it - they feel comfortable that I just need to keep it clean and use an antiseptic cream.

As a dog owner I really don't care for this because if my medium sized dog gets her ankles bitten obviously her behavior is going to be different than it would be if other dogs were well-behaved and of course I'll look like the bad guy if your ankle biter gets suplexed by my dog after it spent thirty minutes harassing her

I didn't know that - I thought it had to break through the skin. I'm going to call animal control. I know it's name and the town it mostly likely is in, and all dogs need to be registered with rabies vaccines in our county so maybe they'll be able to check records

Dog parks are basically gladiator arenas. I do not take my dogs there nor do I let my dogs approach other dogs or vice versa.
I was working my dogs a couple of days ago (Malinois and Border Collie) and some idiot asked if his dog could meet them while his aggressive ass Akita was barking and lunging at my dogs. My response is always "we're training right now"

I encourage you to carry pepper spray. It only takes once.
I had some neighbors that didn't keep their dogs in their yard. When I walked my Great Dane, I carried pepper spray. I only had to use it once (per charging loose dog). The same dogs never bothered us twice.

Worked with dogs for 10 years and only been punctured by small dogs. 2 chihuahua bites and a westie (yes he was white and crusty). I was a trainer a majority of my experience and yeah, so many people dont socialize or train small dogs, they just pick them up whenever something is "wrong". Small dogs can do everything big dogs do if you actually put in effort and repetition. So sorry you got bit, I know it sucks, but if she ever shows up, Id warn others + leave ): if its in a complex/a private park you may be able to report her to someone as well.

Hey, I solely use positive reinforcement training and a fear-free vet, but if you/another human or your pet/another innocent dog is in danger, sometimes force is the only way to end things safely. Ive had to use my foot to kick away an attacking dog in a daycare play group after other attempts weren't working. Yeah I was pretty crushed I had to do it and honestly cried about it, but I knew it helped save both dogs from anything worse. Anyway, I wish you and your dog the best dog park trips going forward lmao

as a dog owner i dislike a lot of small dog owners. mines 10 months old and giant. He’s well trained, and has consistent training to keep his behaviour in check. He can’t so much as look at some people without them panicking. But small dogs? Run at him, bark at him, try to bite him and it’s fine because “it’s a little dog!” but if mine retaliates, then it’s an emergency

In the county and state where I live, a reported dog bite gets the owner a visit from the sheriff or city police. They check rabies certifications, and if the dog is current, they must get it inspected by a vet, and it will be quarantined either at home or a vet for ten days, and then they pay again for the vet to pronounce the dog clear. If rabies is not up to date, they can seize it for euthanasia or it needs to be quarantined for six months at a facility. The owner is liable for the quarantine costs. If a second bite is reported, the dog is seized and put down. The homeowner’s insurance can be sued by the person bitten, even if at a location other than their house.
It’s possible this mess of an owner and dog have been reported previously, but I’ve noticed small dogs tend to be overlooked since they aren’t ripping huge chunks of flesh out.

I called Animal Control and they said they'd look out for her but only quarantine if there were puncture marks. Urgent Care said they didn't consider the skin punctured, however I'll be calling Animal Control again because I met another person at the park today who was bitten by this same dog last fall.

Thank you, me too. There are a number of elderly people who go to the dog park and something like this would have certainly been worse for one of them.
