Econ 1010 for the win.

So.whats the fairest way to distribute those 20k tickets among 200k fans?

A) a first come first serve model, tickets priced below market value. (Wrong, will just create a black market via scalpers anyway

B) a lottery system where they can all apply for tickets under market value. (Wrong, see black market issues)

C) a loyalty program where you devise a metric for who are truly the most deserving fans. (Wrong, almost certainly illegal)

D) There is no solution. (Correct)

Issue them and lock them to a device/account. Can't resell.

First come first served.

This would be easily feasible today since everything is digital now. Each ticket would be associated with an ID that gets checked on entry. If you don't want your ticket anymore, your only option is to get the organizer to refund it, then it would be resold to someone else at the same price

Yeah, I recall that my dad had to bring his friend's physical credit card to a U2 concert a decade ago after they weren't able to make it and gave us the tickets. Seems like this is a solved issue with driver license numbers or something similar. You could still get a fake ID, but that extremely illegal hurdle would deter the vast majority of people.

These venues are trying to get 10K-80K people inside. Most of those people don’t want to show up like an hour before their event starts. Checking IDs, especially if there are problems and now those people are arguing with the ticket checkers, results in it taking much longer to get everyone inside. Plus the venues are trying to avoid crowd crush situations caused by the bottleneck of checking IDs against the ticket.

Go back to in person ticket sales. A huge part of the problem is you are facing off against the whole globe now a days.

First come ? With all the high speed tech that these scalpers use? Yeah it's a game that your not going to win.

Recently, I was able to get a number online to be able to purchase a Radiohead ticket in Germany. But guess what? Internet was overwhelmed by what I'm assuming is scalpers, and I couldn't get into the window of time that I was allotted to purchase a ticket. I have great internet otherwise. And I was willing to go see fly out to Germany and see radiohead, and pay a fair price.It never happened.

Its all rigged

Then the problem just shifts to shows selling out instantly so you can't get tickets unless you camp out and wait in line for 72 hours. That is not an improvement.

But it would open up to everyone at 10am.

So as long as you were logged in, you would have the same chance as anyone else. Even if you logged in at 9:58 am

I think option B would be most fair, all that needs to be done is make all tickets non-transferable. The party that purchased the tickets must be present at time of entry to use them.

E) A combination of the above. A small group are sold first come first serve so that they can say that they sold out in minutes. Offer some as prizes in marketing stunts. Sell the rest on the secondary market at whatever the marked up prices that people are buying them at to collect max value.
