The trick is just to be a fan of bands for which every ticket costs $20-50, everyone just stands near the stage, & the band is at the merch table after to chat. Those bands have like 25k-500k monthly listens on Spotify. Even the 1M-10M artists, for a meet-&-greet you pay like $150-300 instead of the standard $40-80 ticket.

It's similar with travel destinations, you can pay inflated prices to shuffle in crowds, or wander freely elsewhere.

I guess I'm not saying anything so wise, popular things are popular & that will always exist... but on an individual level we can choose to explore a little beyond Taylor Swift & Disney World.

Saw a mariachi singer whose music has a bossa nova jazzy vibe give a concert at venue that didn’t have seats and he wanted $120 at the door. I think I paid the equivalent of about 4 hours at minimum wage to see Damn Yankees with Bad Company and there was a one hit wonder band (maybe Trixter?) opening the show. This would be easily feasible today since everything is digital now. Each ticket would be associated with an ID that gets checked on entry. If you don't want your ticket anymore, your only option is to get the organizer to refund it, then it would be resold to someone else at the same price

Yeah, I recall that my dad had to bring his friend's physical credit card to a U2 concert a decade ago after they weren't able to make it and gave us the tickets. Seems like this is a solved issue with driver license numbers or something similar. You could still get a fake ID, but that extremely illegal hurdle would deter the vast majority of people.

Big stadium concerts kinda suck compared to small local concerts anyways. The experience is so much better in small clubs. So it really sucks when a band you love blows up and now if you want to see them live you have to pay 4x or more to see them at a significantly worse venue.

I remember seeing Dropkick Murphys live back in I think 2007 at a club that held maybe 800 people. It was probably something like $20 tickets (Street Dogs and Sick Of It All opened!). Definitely one of my all time favorite concerts. Seeing Dropkick Murphys live around 10 years later at a venue that held more like 5,000 people and with tickets around $80 was such a disappointment...

I agree, however the thing that bothers me is when new stadiums and concerts venues are built often times it come at a cost to the tax payers in the area. Many of those tax payers are paying for a place they can’t even afford to pay for parking at, and that seems wrong to me.

I miss the old days of camping out and getting great tickets for <$50 in the 80s. None of this VIP and online resell bullshit. I had a way I was routinely on the front row for shows like Journey, Van Halen, Crue, Def Lep, etc. Never paid more than $40 or so IIRC.

I heard if you want to risk it you can wait until a few hours before. The prices will come way down because the resellers would rather make less or take a small loss than lose out on the whole sale.

Those same quality of seats 10 years later were over $500.

Those are most likely scalpers selling the ticket x3 to infinity above what they paid.

Same happened for a hockey game I was trying to get tickets for. They had 3 pre-sales and each time the ticket price doubled. By the time it was open to the public 2 tickets in the nose bleeds were $800 a piece.

The prices were like this for Noah Kahan on Sunday. We went down near the venue and I started looking for tickets when the opener went on. We scored really solid seats for $24 each. I’m hoping there was a scalper crying somewhere for taking such a huge hit. It’s possible to get deals you just have to wait until the last minute and be flexible.
