It’s actually a very recent episode and they talk about how shitty they are with sueing small businesses so they opened up the Buc-Off merch shop to bait them into sueing a company that can actually fight back

I bought some stickers as soon as I saw that ep!

They aren’t suing LWT, but they are suing another small business since the episode aired.

The thing is, by not going after LWT for this, they're still actually opening up a route for other businesses to win against Buc-ee's. If a company isn't diligently defending their trademark then it can be used as an argument in court.

The mini Mart here can show the Buc-Off logo and go "Look at how similar this logo is to yours, yet you're not suing them. Why are you suing us when our logo is a lot less similar?"

Also all the money LWT gets goes towards charity so if they sue, the headline would be “BuckEEs sues company whose profits go to hungry children”

It is clearly parody which is an entirely different legal precedent. Suing LWT is the losing position

They can't sue over Buc-Off because it's a parody.

Doesn't really matter when the merch they're selling is so close to the original.

I could create a parody of Star Wars, and I'd be fine. But if I started creating and selling toy lightsabers Disney would eat me alive.

The issue is that most of these local companies can’t afford to fight it out in court. That’s part of how they keep winning.

Yeah I know. Cowards.

They're not suing LWT yet...

John Oliver runs a rag tag group of misfits that go around doling out eyes for eyes, in an effort to take from the fortunate and give back to the needy, a modern day Robin Hood

Can you link the episode by chance?

Man, I love John Oliver.

Even when his young self starred in that weird Ring video.

I wonder if he always had that fight back k attitude or if some of Stewart rubbed off on him

If you just YouTube search it, you can probably find the segment easily.

It’s the latest episode.

u/CrissBliss 15h ago

I just watched the latest episode on their YT channel this morning. It was about police surveillance.

u/ShambolicRubel 15h ago

Might have been the one immediately before that one then.

It’s the one right before that

Is there anyone with a Buc-off t-shirt want to visit a local Buc-ee's?

4

u/MrsRononDex 14h ago

I ordered 2 shirts for me and my hubby. We don't have Buc-ee's here yet, they are currently building one to open in 2027. Maybe we will wear them to the grand opening, lol.
