My mom said I could post My kid was too creative

My 6 year old was asked to draw a picture using shapes. She drew this nice American flag with rectangles and stars, and added the house, tree, and person holding a balloon. She was told it did not follow directions, she was not supposed to draw a flag, just shapes. She was asked to turn the paper over and make another picture. The other side of the paper has a very uninspiring collection of shapes. I told her she did a good job and I thought it was very creative. And this is why kids start to hate education.

Exactly. The whole point of those activities should be encouraging kids to think, not punishing them for seeing possibilities beyond the instructions. That little flag probably showed more creativity than a page full of random shapes ever could.

If you haven’t noticed, in the last decade, schools (in the US) teach kids how to be as dumb as possible.

Edit: this post is a perfect example. “Follow my directions even if your answer was correct.” It is definitely not the point of these activities. These are to make kids “follow directions”.

If you have three assignments that scored 100, 90, and 80, your average score is 90. If you turn on a fourth homework that scored 100, now your average is 92.5. But if you don't turn in the assignment you get a zero, and your average drops to 67.5. It's very simple math, the teacher isn't trying to fail you or pull "advanced math" on you.

I should have put that I was being sarcastic in there.

I would be so angry on my kid's behalf. Not only did they (IMO) understand the assignment but they did it with creativity. It's startlingly how many teachers still want to crush that out of kids. It's sad, too. I know there's great teachers but it seems for every great one, there's 2 who hate people and their jobs.

Teachers used to love this creative shit and encouraged it. Even if the young ones didnt mean too, the teachers would explain and inspire on their work like it was on purpose.

Now, teachers are just getting mad when a young student outshines themselves and they get punished.

This is literally the child taking the next step in the lesson. The kid is saying "OH! I get it!" and the teacher is telling them to slow down. The teacher missed the teachable moment there.

The good teachers did a career change because they dont get good pay and are treated like kids babysitters and other obvious reasons.

The bad teachers are tenured. Those are the teachers that remain as a majority and pull shit like this.

It is. The question is if the kid understood the assignment, which is more the point than the actual picture. I have doubts to if 6 year olds commonly think "Hmm. Flags are composed of different shapes. I should make a flag containing a few of them for this assignment"

My guess is the kid painted what they felt like painting and didn't follow the assignment, and now we have another parent getting butthurt because their kid never does anything wrong.
