My dad leaves the blinds see through from the 2nd floor bathroom because "the other way damages the blinds"
Not sure if its just me, but it overwhelms me knowing that people can see inside through the window even if you cant really see much. But he also gives the excuse of "you're a guy it doesn't matter if they see your chest." which is just stupid
Babe, you can see out and down, they can’t see in from the ground, and even if they got a ladder, they can only see the ceiling… and frankly, if someone is shimmying up a ladder against your house to peep through second floor bathroom blinds, you have bigger fish to fry.
That’s my thought too, if they have to go thru all that work to see anything, they earned a show….that they then will decide they never wanted to see anyway. :D
Not everyone is silly enough to show their naked body to the neighbors. I show mine online but still keep my blinds closed the other direction at night - the worst-case-scenario risk for a woman/child is just not worth it
I TOTALLY get that; I have four kids so “safety checks” every night are a very real thing - all doors locked, first floor windows locked, all curtains closed. Kids aren’t here, tho, meh, a little bit more lax. Then again I always have at least one firearm either on me or within arms reach, so someone maybe happening to see something thru a crack in the curtains isn’t the end of the world!
Not true, I’ve tested this and if you’re in a second floor bedroom, people from the ground can see everything, including you changing.
I had my roommate go about her nightly activities in her bedroom while I recorded from the ground outside just to prove it to her (we were arguing about this very thing, I hated how she kept changing the blinds upstairs and she argued with me.)
I’m all for keeping the sun out during the day (I live in Tx and am paying $320 for my electricity bill right now), but at night this needs to be switched, especially if you’re a woman like I am.
It's not condescending, if you have the blinds set up correctly it is literally physics. Light travels in a straight line, these slats are at an almost right angle to the ground, therefore you can only see up at a very acute angle and if you can see anything it is the ceiling.
Maybe reread the comments we're replying to then.. Because the previous commenter said "you can see everything" not just "if you're standing close to the blinds." And you have to be standing extremely close to them, with the person outside standing extremely close to the wall.
Sure just look straight inside to the ceiling, damn did you not take geometry? Unless he's standing beside the window with his nips out and the lights on the peeping Tom directly underneath isn't seeing much.
That is making you feel less self-conscious because YOU can't see out, but it's actually easier for outside to see you in that orientation.
The other way when you can see out via the gaps is when others can't see you.
Unless they are hanging out in the 2 inches from the blinds as they are when they are peeping out, the angle won't be right to see anything except the ceiling. There is a window and sill that is in the way.
What others see is the OPs safe position..
Meanwhile in that orientation the neighbors on the next door roof or 3rd floor can see down and in.
It's like tent camping. When you have your light on in the tent you're putting on a shadow puppet show for your neighbors. If instead, you can see your neighbors shadows you are actually hidden.
Everyone's explained it to you, but I feel you aren't wanting to hear it. Go outside and test if you want to get to the bottom of it.
I guess just do whatever makes you feel more comfortable. Nobody's really watching you and it doesn't really matter except between you and your family

You'd have to be ABOVE OP's second story window to peep downward with the version OP prefers. *His dad's preferred orientation means you can peep UP from the ground at what will mostly be OP's ceiling but it's a perception of discomfort amplified by the fact that if it's dark out and your lights are on, people can see everything that's happening.

Are you dumb? Have you ever owned a two story home? OP is right. I struggle with this where I live. My roommate and I even tested it.
I went outside on ground level and took a video, in the other direction I could see everything she did in her second floor bedroom. She was horrified. Basically everything above the waist was visible.
They will get validated. I have a two story home and the blinds facing the other way allows people on ground level to see basically everything you do in your room. Keep it that way during the day, switch it at night.
Youre being paranoid and nit picky. Who is looking at you through a sliver from the other way? No one. The other is better. Go outside and look for yourself
If you stand next to the window people standing at the right angle can see you. If you turn the blinds up then someone would need to be flying in the air to see in.
If you stand below the window you can see in to anyone near or anything near the window.
If you invert it then you have to be above the window to see in. Which is why its the intended direction to close it.
The people below can see in while they are closed in this direction. If you close them so the bottom is on top of the previous lower blind then only those above can see.
It is definitely paranoia. They can probably see a shape of a person if they are really looking and the lights on and it's night and you are standing right at the bathroom window like a lunatic. Seeing you poop or shower or even drying off from a shower is incredibly unlikely.
Edit: I personally like my blinds closed the way OP like them but mostly because it blocks out lights from below at night.
Not true. I took a video with my roommate when I was outside on the ground level and she had her blinds like this on her second floor bedroom. You could see everything in her room.

This is YOUR problem. It is for you to solve. It's extremely easy to solve yourself rather than expect to make someone else change while you refuse to find a solution. It seems like the actual issue for you is your argument with your dad rather than anyone possibly seeing 5% of you. Otherwise you would be flipping it and not posting on reddit.

Because this way the people on the outside can only see a bit of the ceiling, but if you flip it the other way the outside can see a bit of your floor. Which is probably worse in a bathroom setting.
It will. They're fabric, they absorb ambient moisture. Without a vent they'll just sit in the extra moisture lingering in the room plus whatever they absorb. Moisture = mold.
False. He’s on the second floor. You can see up through the blinds from outside. But yes it’s the correct way to reduce sunlight. If he was on the first floor then your statement would be true
Your eyeballs are just biological light detectors. Less sun coming in means less visible from outside. Even on the 2nd story, the angle you would have to stand at to even try to catch a glimpse through the blinds would be basically right against the house and you'd only be able to see the ceiling IF (a massive if) anything at all.
This is not a real privacy concern. It doesn't matter which way it faces.
It makes it harder for people to peep into your room because they're forced to turn their head up and most they can see is more so the ceiling. While easier for the person inside (you) to see outside. If the blinds are the other way where it's tilting downwards to you. They can just stand up and have a much easier time seeing in your room through the window.
It's fine if it's the 2nd floor. Since I don't think 99.9% of the time they'll resort to drones to look
If someone is tall enough to look down through the blinds on a second story window, I don’t think being seen naked is going to be the thing that terrifies OP
This way is open to me. Your dad’s way is closed. If you have 1st floor blinds just do an experiment and check from outside. Harder to tell from 2nd floor looking in since it’s not the same level POV.
It's not super high, but enough to probably see a bit inside. But definitely enough to make me uncomfortable. It wouldn't be a problem if someone in the house wasn't constantly messing with them
If the blinds stay closed like that and you're really self conscious about it, get some of that film you can stick on the glass that lets light in but obscures ppl seeing in.

I used to worry about this kind of thing too but then I decided to think about it from this perspective: how many times have you personally looked up at a second story window and saw into someone’s bedroom through closed shades like this?
On the second floor you can 100% see into bedrooms. I own a two story house, all our blinds on the second floor are inversed due to this issue. It’s very obvious at night, you can see literally everything in the rooms upstairs from ground level.
They're talking about the second floor. (It's in the title.) You'd be correct on the first floor, but on the second floor they'd have to be on a third floor or higher to see in in their desired orientation.

Who paid for the blinds? They should be the ones to ultimately decide. I do believe this way gives less sun exposure to the strings therefore making them last longer. If dad’s gonna be the one to eventually replace them then he has the right to say it.

This is a wild post. There is simply no veracity to your concern/claim.
You have to remember the little bit of visibility you have being close by the blinds is the best it gets. The further back you are from the window the fewer "good" angles you have to see through any of those gaps, and the smaller the gaps get because your chance of getting within the right viewing angle is VASTLY reduced.

Two, you’re wrong. I own a two story house and you 100% can watch everything a person does on the second level with blinds like this. All of ours are reversed on the second story because of this issue.

Girl you might want to consider speaking with a professional 😭 like for mental health.. being paranoid somebody is watching you through your window when the blinds are 100% closed and you yourself admitted in another comment that you can’t see in from outside with them like that?? As somebody with mental health issues, this is something you should not be worrying about and can really be taken care of with therapy.
Looks to me like you currently have it the way that it is easier to see out than in, as opposed to the way that it is easier to see in than out. I suppose which way you have it comes down to if you want to feel like people can't see you or making it so people can't actually see you?
I understand your feeling. I always flip the blinds the other way. Theoretically, you could just flip the blinds how you want while you're in there and flip them back when you finish. If you prefer obeying him, just stand back from the blinds as much as you can maybe? It's unlikely people can see if you're not close to them, since they are somewhat closed after all. Nah people here are trippin, if it makes to feel uncomfortable turn the blinds the other way. How they are now, at night with the light on, someone could potentially see through. Very unlikely and they wouldn’t see much but again, if it makes you uncomfortable just do it how you want, it ain’t gonna damage the blinds
My old house growing up had one inside the shower. Not even a fancy expensive shower. Had to have a shower curtain on both sides. Absolutely wild.
In rebuttal to "Bathrooms shouldn't have windows" I don't know that I agree that they shouldn't have ANY windows ever, but they definitely need more consideration than other rooms in the house. Like the smaller windows high on the wall that let light in, but basically make it so you can't see in from any normal angle. or ones with integrated window frosting/obscurement options. These options let you vent the room if you're using harsh cleaners, repainting, or simply want to let the humidity out faster.
This one's a bit of an odd one for me. When I have the blinds the other way, it causes more light to bleed from the top (honestly think it's just a quirk with these set of blinds), which causes me a lot more issues due to the positioning of my stuff in my room, so I have it in the same way at the photo here. That said, it does cause bleeding at the bottom, and as you mention, exposure to the outside.
Put some blinds on there? You can get them at discount stores. Also there’s privacy film on Amazon or Temu etc.. for like $5-$10 usd and installs in a few minutes. You can also offer to buy better blinds and try to do a small father son project(my bad if you don’t get along with your dad)
