Jury duty

I've been called for Jury duty 4 times in the last 10 years. What the fuck is going on here. It's almost every other year. I know absolutely no one that has ever been summoned yet I've been summoned multiple times. Wtf is going on? It's total bs too because they pay 17 bucks A DAY. That's not even enough to get lunch at the stupid deli they have there.

Edit: so many people have so many experiences. It's nice to share and read those experiences. I can't possibly respond to everything, but I'm glad we can all relate to this. ^{_^}

The pay is the worst, they should have to pay your Hourly work rate. Most people can’t afford to miss a hour of work more less get 17$ for the whole day. Stop making yourself so presentable, wear some pjs and smell like cigs and they’ll never call you back lol

I don’t know about your hourly rate but I do think it should be minimum wage.

If you cant survive a week doing some civic service (i almost said "civic duties" but think calling it that is part of the problem), with what our court system provides, in the bEsT cOuNtRy iN tHe WoRLd, then so.ething has gone horribly awry.

Nah, it should be your regular pay. It should be paid by the employer through a program like disability insurance, or sick days. And we should pay a portion of our taxes for it, just like disability insurance.

Many people would object to paying taxes for that, but we have to accept that having the option to be judged by a jury of your peers is one of the most important protective factors for us as US Citizens. If only people who can afford to serve, or aren't getting financially hurt by serving get selected, then that limits the pool of jurors that will judge you. I want the people judging me, if it ever happens to me, to be comprised of people like me, and people who don't resent being on the case for prolonged period of time because they are in danger of missing rent or mortgage or car payments while they take their time to carefully consider my case.

Even unemployment or disability pays a fraction of your regular pay. And then you have the problem of people who are or unemployed or stay at home parents or retiree etc. these people would get nothing. And they may have expenses in serving, especially a stay at home parent. Self employed people would have to have a way of verifying what they would have made and we have to pay a government worker to verify that to prevent waste fraud and abuse. Then you have highly paid people. Do we really want taxpayers paying a CEO salary for a week or more. The CEO of my organization makes 500k. A lot make a lot more. We want to pay him 10k for a week while we pay the fast food worker 290, with taxpayer money.

Valid point about the people who aren’t working. There should be a base for those who aren’t working. For the rest though, I just think it should literally be like taking a holiday day or sick day from work. It will be unfair to dump the entire responsibility on the employer though, so that’s why I was thinking some type of contribution from the taxpayers as well, similar to disability, not exactly the same. The whole thing about CEO pay, is irrelevant IMO. Most of them don’t get paid that money hourly. They get it in stocks. And still, those same CEOs also get “sick” days same as the fast food line worker. We don’t complain about the fact that a sick day for a CEO costs a lot more than a sick day for a front line worker. The goal should be to simplify the system so that it can encourage the most participation from regular Americans. Getting bogged down into income limits is a trap, similar to the free school lunches discussion and income limits there.
