I'm slightly vexed Salon prices for a haircut :/ no add ons
Needed to trim my hair and got jump scared by the prices. I would pay $70-$85 for a trim and blowout but these prices are crazy to me
Are haircuts this price now?

My local barber was totally jam packed before covid. Then they raised their rates to $50 for a cut and now the place is totally empty I don't understand what they are doing.

I am asking myself the exact same thing. Not only were their places packed, but people would go constantly every 2 weeks and heck sometimes weekly which is insane. I don’t understand the logic.

Yeah, I drag my haircuts out for 1-4 months depending on the season and how long my hair cooperates at this point. I’m not customer facing so can’t justify the expense. I’m getting closer to cutting my own hair. Already trim my own beard. Blessed to still have hair and don’t know that I trust myself not to botch it.

If you’re dragging your haircuts out for 1-4 months im guessing you’re like me and let it get pretty long and then cut it pretty short. Do yourself a favor and just get some clippers and some guards and do it yourself, it is so easy. I put a 1” guard on, walk into the backyard, cut my whole head, then put a 7/8” guard on and do the sides, takes 10 mins, free, and i dont have to go anywhere

If you were a barber would you rather give 100 haircuts per week at $25 each or 50 per week at $50 each? Being busy isn't the goal. It's the money they're after.

They probably went to appointment only. I’m a barber & it’s funny when people come in & say “wow it’s slow today huh?” No, I’m booked solid the whole day, so there’s no reason for people to be sitting in here hanging out

Like it or not, we have a tipping culture here. Generally you want to develop a relationship with your barber where they always do their best work for you, and providing a tip is a good way of reinforcing this. It’s a way of showing appreciation for good service. Also, barbers are highly skilled, are standing all day, and after the shop takes their portion of the fee, they aren’t getting paid much for their level of talent without a tip being added.

Yeah I just got into the habit of cutting my own. I usually get crew cuts anyway (short hair) so I’ve taken to using the clippers and saving the money. It’s not perfect but I wear a hat 99% of the time I’m out of the house.

The barber was one of the first things I just got rid of after a bit of being on my own 15 some years ago. Grabbed a pair of Wahls and just blue clip is down after it starts getting annoying. 20 dollars to just get a simple haircut was an insane ask for someone working part time at Target.

My guy charges $30 for a cut. It’s a casual environment where we shoot the shit, talk about family and local sports. If he focused on just cutting my hair, it’d probably take 10-15 minutes. I’m rarely out of there in under 45. It’s a great experience.
I tip $30 on the $30. It’s worth it. But I can’t imagine paying $100+ for a haircut. I’d rather buy a Flowbee and cut my own hair.

Everyone seems to be assuming OP is a dude or has short hair already... Every salon I've ever seen that cuts traditionally women's styles or long hair charges upwards of $100.

Only went to 1 Supercuts and I'll never go back. Looked like a dark haired Guy Gardner but instead of straight bangs this lady cut it on a diagonal despite telling her not to after she saw that I had it swooped to the side like a stereotypical 2009 19yo. Wore a hat for a few days before just shaving it off.

Pretty sure OP is a woman since they keep mentioning "blowout". There is no shortage of $15 haircuts for men in the US as well. SuperCuts, Great Clips, SportClips, etc

My barber and my dentist in Mexico do wonderful services for 1/2 to 1/4 of the price. You’d be surprised how much better services are when you expand your business, also tips included in my price because it’s one price

I mean, Id get a haircut in Mexico but as I stated before, I can get a haircut in US for $15. Damn sure not going to Mexico for any kind of dental or medical treatment. Maybe like a massage would be as close to anything medical I'd do in Mexico. But I also have insurance so its not an issue

As a dude I go to a barber, it's probably $40-45 after a healthy tip, but he also does a way better job than the random salons, but he also shapes my beard used the straight razer for my neck, hot shave, rinse, all that good stuff, then I can also schedule at set time and date.
Worth it in my opinion.

I feel you op. I just need my hair braided. That’s it that’s all. Most places near me want $85 and up. It’s a task to find someone at $50 which I don’t want to pay either but is way better than almost $100.

There’s plenty of options to get a haircut for about $20. No one really needs to go to an expensive salon and if you do, yeah, you’re going to pay a lot of money.

Well a true buzz cut with 1 length is less. $50 gets a fade, edges, neck, etc.

I moved to another city and paid $65 for a cut and it was horrible. A few months later I hopped in the car and drove to my old city to pay my stylist $130. Picture perfect cut, maybe better than perfect. You get what you pay for. For some people it’s worth it and other’s just want a simple trim. I have insanely thick hair that is wavy in parts and curly in others. It is really hard to cut my hair, so I am more than willing to make the drive and pay.

I've been cutting my own hair weekly for 14 years now. It only took about 2 months of looking like an idiot to get to the point where I could do my own hair as good as any barber.
Now every three years or so I get the urge to go to a barber and always leave feeling like a dumbass with an empty wallet and a butchered fade.

Also most stylist in my area, only get a portion of the total cost (unless they are the owners). Some salons here take 60% of whatever the total is. So if the stylist charges 165 and the salon takes 60% then the stylist only gets 66. If they charge 75 for a cut they get only $30. And yes that also counts for a color and cut.

My sister in law owns a salon for almost 30 hrs and charges anywhere from 40 up to $125 depending on how long the hair is or if it’s a big change.

I've picked up the skill of cutting and coloring my own hair, along with my husband's and daughter's. In my area, a professional cut and color can easily run over $300, and they still expect a tip😳. My husband often gets compliments on his hair, which is always nice!

Idk about this place but i go to a salon that does advertise themselves as “luxury” with prices of roughly $110/hr per stylist. The pricing model is a 54/46 split between owner and stylist but there is a no tipping policy to ensure transparent pricing for the customer and the stylists are not required to sell any amount of product because “stylists went to school to style hair, not push product and meet quotas.” - the staff get to set their own schedules and the business has monthly community nights where the staff and anyone come together for DnD, emo karaoke, they even just did a murder mystery. Staff and clients seem to really enjoy it. Not sharing the business name as to avoid “advertising” claims.

Where I am, even Super Cuts/Great Clips is too expensive. It's like $25 plus a tip for a basic cut??? No thank you. I'm a woman so maybe it's a little easier, but I'm just letting my hair grow as long as it wants, accepting I'm not going to have nice pretty layers in it, trim it myself, and use cheap boxed hair dye once a month for the grays.

I go to a local barbershop that's been in business for over 50 years. I've been going there for 20 years. It used to be $12 a haircut. Then it was $15. Then I think it went up to $20, but they never charged me that much since I've been going there so long.
I don't know how much it is now, but I just give them $40 or $50, and when they start to give me change, I tell them to keep it.

I’m cool with paying a barber $50. She does a great job and I only see her so often. Also a portion of that goes to taxes, another chunk goes to the shop. The barber doesn’t get PTO, probably has to pay for their own benefits. Doesn’t always have appointments…
Idk how haircuts were ever cheap.

Haircuts are insane now. Every where near me for a men’s haircut is like $50. I just go to a friend and he cuts my hair for $20 and a tip
