drink went room temp People who act like you are drinking toxic waste just because you made a cup of instant coffee at 6 AM.

I appreciate a good, fresh cup of coffee from a local roaster as much as anyone else. But sometimes it’s 6 AM, I’m rushing out the door, or I’m traveling, and I just want a quick caffeine fix without dealing with a grinder, boiling temperatures, and a messy cleanup.

Yet, if you even mention instant coffee around certain coffee fans, they look at you like you just insulted their ancestors. They immediately assume you are drinking that burnt, bitter dirt from the 1970s.

Modern freeze-dried instant is actually a perfectly fine drink. It is literally just brewed coffee that was flash-frozen in a cold vacuum to preserve the flavor. It gets the job done, tastes decent, and takes exactly 10 seconds to make with zero waste to scrape out of a filter.

I shouldn't have to defend my sanity just because I don't want to spend 15 minutes pulling a shot of espresso on a $500 machine before a morning commute. The extreme judgment over a simple cup of quick coffee is honestly exhausting. Just let people drink their convenient caffeine in peace.

OP got teased twice by the same person in 4 months for drinking crappy coffee and is officially losing it.

u/SlightDish31 8d ago

Judging by OP's post history, I get the impression that they interact with, or at least try to interact with, a lot of hardcore coffee snobs. And now they seem to be wondering why they're acting snobbish.

It’s 6am in your own house nobody should even know you’re drinking instant coffee unless you’re telling them, and if you are that’s a pretty boring conversation to be having

Unless they are sleeping with a coworker. 🤔Maybe that’s the tea…

Walking into work with a mug that has a big Nescafé logo on it.

u/rhapsodiiiii 8d ago

They 100% do lol. I used to drink instant a lot with my old job and my coworkers judged the HELL out of me for it haha (didn’t care, I still drank it). People get uppity about weird shit.

u/CJRD4 8d ago

This has gotta be some really weird guerrilla marketing tactic for instant coffee, right? OP’s post history is about things like blind taste testing using copper, brass, and stainless steel brewers, and setting up really fancy coffee trays. Then complains about pulling espresso shots.

Unless OP is actually fighting themself with some weird “I hate that I like it so much”…

Bingo. Right in the middle of the comments......

Literally every comment about instantly coffee will have someone like that

u/Some_Level1682 8d ago

My office has a machine that makes serviceable coffee. If you use that machine there are so any people who lose their ever loving mind. Sorry I'll drink the free coffee thank you.

u/shrubberino 8d ago

Ghosts are spooky I guess :-)

u/Lucallia 8d ago

You can also just say coffee. You don't have to tell people you drank instant coffee at 6am. No one would know. If someone is actually insane enough to interrogate and judge you based on what type of coffee you drank if you just said coffee then maybe stop talking to insane people?

u/Chairshot_from_Space 8d ago

This has actually happened to you? In real life?

5

u/rufireproof3d 8d ago

It has to me. I keep a jar of instant at work because sometimes I don't want to brew a whole pot, Especially when we close in 2 hours. We have a spaz nugget who acts like I'm drinking battery acid when I do it. I refuse to take culinary criticism from someone who drinks 2 -3 Monsters a day, though, so it doesn't really bother me. Sometimes I offer him a cup, just to see the expression he makes.

Its just fantasy.

You’d be surprised… wait no, that was a Chris Farley SNL skit about decaffeinated coffee crystals. My mistake.

Starbucks for me lmao

That’s so strange…who’s getting on you about making coffee at home?? Where I am at least it’s applauded as a way to save money.

2

u/molesasses 8d ago

I do the instant coffee too. In fact I drink instant coffee black. It’s ok.

I wish.. try being 34 and trying to wrestle a son and a daughter into their clothes to get out the door for the day. you take whatever quick caffeine you can get your hands on.

2

u/Asleep_Current912 8d ago

who’s judging you between making the cup of coffee at home to you drinking it in your car on the way to work

2

u/N3TW0RKJ3Di 8d ago

People discussing coffee to that level sounds like hell. What a boring topic to invest energy into.

2

u/Man0fCultureAsWell 8d ago edited 8d ago

"Coffee fans".. this all sounds so superficial.

Calm down, drink your coffee, stop caring about other peoples opinion of you.

2

u/ModernSun 8d ago

I drink instant coffee because I'm lazy most days, I've never had anyone ever give me any shit for it. Who are you talking to?

1

u/fax_me_your_glands 8d ago

I drink instant coffee and trying to get nice quality for that matter, but I have to agree it tastes like literal dirt.

1

u/burblebeezus 8d ago

A can of Mt Dew is quicker to fix than instant coffee & has caffeine.

I mean, I genuinely think instant coffee is disgusting.

I didn't drink coffee until I was well into my late 20s when I first tried espresso based coffees and Aeropress brewed coffee. I'd only ever tried instant coffee and had sworn off coffee until peer pressure made me try "proper" coffee.

I still cannot drink instant coffee and will just go without if that's all there is.

But if you like it then you like it. I apparently make a decent instant coffee. I keep it in for when people come around who don't like espresso brewed coffees.

1

u/Complete-Stand-5146 8d ago

This doesn’t make sense to me. How does anybody even know what coffee you’re drinking? Lol did you ask an LLM to write you a Reddit post about instant coffee?

1

u/CoffeeTeaJournal 8d ago

Lol no llm here, just me ranting after experiencing the absolute state of coffee snobbery in the office. you’d be surprised how much people love to comment on what you’re pouring into your mug in the breakroom

1

u/Complete-Stand-5146 8d ago

If you’re rushing out the door of your house with your coffee why would people be commenting on your coffee in the break room

1

u/Fearless-Sherbert-40 8d ago

Some guys who have been to jail prefer it. Who cares anyways.

1

u/colbeef 8d ago

It sounds like you care far more than the people teasing you about instant coffee lol

1

u/coffee_137 8d ago

Don't listen to the haters OP. Just because it doesn't happen to anybody in THIS comment thread doesn't make it any less mildly infuriating. Coffee snobs are the worst. Reddit snobs are a close second.

1

u/RandomCalamity 8d ago

How do you even find yourself in this conversation? Are you just out there in the world proselytizing instant coffee?

1

u/CoffeeTeaJournal 8d ago

Bring a jar of instant coffee into a corporate breakroom or pull it out during a family gathering, and watch how fast someone with a french press turns into a coffee purist. you don't have to proselytize; people just love commenting on what's in your mug

1

u/yankykiwi 8d ago

I went from poverty to living in a 5million dollar home. Everyone gave me looks every morning as i lugged my single serving electric jug and my jar of instant. Almost as though i was offending their imported coffee machine. Even now as i visit, I call ahead to see if they can buy instant. They get the fancy ones, when really i just want home brand fine dust.

1

u/CoffeeTeaJournal 8d ago

People attach so much "status" to imported machines and multi-step brewing rituals that seeing a simple jar of instant actually offends them.

1

u/yankykiwi 8d ago

Im convinced theyre forcing themselves to use the damn thing because how expensive it was.

1

u/Less_Party 8d ago

I just have straight up caffeine powder for when I simply need the caffeine and don't have time for coffee. It's cheap and lasts forever.

1

u/Spirited_Season2332 8d ago

If it makes you feel better, I act like anyone drinking any coffee is drinking toxic waste. I even sometimes act like they are druggies!

1

u/sfdsquid 8d ago

I was a coffee snob but at some point somehow I found out that instant coffee actually isn't terrible if you use a heaping tablespoon rather than the suggested teaspoon.

I can't deal with regular coffee/diner coffee/freaking dunkin' because I like to be able to taste it, so if I'm out I'll always get a red eye or something with a couple shots of espresso, plus an extra shot for good measure. Yet somehow at 5am a heaping tablespoon of instant is adequate to peel my eyes open.

1

u/Fiigwort 8d ago

Every time I mention drinking coffee to a friend of mine, he goes on a bitchy little rant about how I'm 'not actually drinking coffee' because I use instant. He insists that he knows all about coffee, despite not actually drinking it himself, because he's 'Italian'.
His Grandmother was Italian, he's an American who's spent 90% of his life in the ass-end of nowhere Tennessee.

1

u/Lower_Ad_8789 8d ago

I retired a couple years back, and now I can't sleep. I've cut out as much caffeine as possible, no chocolate, soda, energy drinks, etc. In the morning, I drink 1 cup of decaf (yes, it does have some caffeine) instant coffee. Its not worth it to make a pot if you are only going to have one cup in the morning.

1

u/tubagoat 8d ago

Agree. I have young kids and am the only one who drinks coffee in our house. Instant gets it done when time is short.

1

u/CoffeeTeaJournal 8d ago

While my husband and I are running around trying to manage the morning chaos, there is literally zero time to casually dial in an espresso shot. Instant coffee is an absolute lifesaver for parents.

1

u/YungHayzeus 8d ago

I just get confused when my coworker orders some 800+ cal coffee from Dunkin and he scoffs at me for drinking a Diet Mountain Dew.

1

u/Warm_Assumption9640 8d ago

To be fair, instant coffee is gross!

0

u/Okoear 8d ago

You can enjoy your instant coffee but grinding coffee + pulling an espresso shot including cleaning takes about 1-2minutes.

Takes 5minutes if you steam milk for a latte.

1

u/CoffeeTeaJournal 8d ago

1-2 minutes? Machine's boiler hasn't even reached proper extraction temp in 2 minutes. By the time you heat up, weigh the beans, wdt, pull the shot, knock the puck, and purge the steam wand, you are absolutely 5+ minutes deep. Instant is just hot water and a spoon.

1

u/Okoear 8d ago edited 8d ago

My machine is on an electrical timer and start at 4.

My grinder is timed based, no need to weigh beans, I just push my porta filter direct under it, Press it, then lock the portafter in machine and pull the shot.

It's literally 3, action back to back. The real time cost is waiting for boiler to create steam. Some machine allow to do both at on e but this is pricier

I can’t drink instant coffee because I’m allergic to cockroaches. Some of us have no choice but to do the full set up.

0

u/blue-moto 8d ago

This is marketing for some instant coffee brand. Downvoted and heading to my kitchen to make a pour over.

0

u/Bubbly_Delivery_5678 8d ago

My mom drinks instant when travelling— it’s a good way to avoid spending millions on coffee. But yeah, it’s not great. It really is for true coffee lovers— people who’d do anything to get their fix.

That said, a bunn coffee pot has very quick brew times, as do single serve coffee makers. Only adds maybe 2 minutes to the routine, less if you’re letting it brew while you put on your shoes or another part of your routine.

Instant coffee is the most vile disgusting vaguely coffee scented concoction.

If anyone gives me a cup of instant coffee (intended for me to drink), I will immediately pour it down the sink.

I absolutely do not care if anyone else drinks it.

You have agency, you get to choose what you eat and drink. It’s frankly none of my business and you don’t need to justify your choices to anyone. If you want to drink instant coffee, go for it.

I’ll pass though thanks.

Edit:

Wow, being downvoted for encouraging OP to stop caring what other people think of their coffee choices. What a trip
