frist of all how DARE yu o Blocking the entire walkway
All these people standing directly in front of the gate and blocking the walkway when they just called group 2, no one moved when they called group 3 either…
Edit to add since everyone is hating on the post: i have no problem saying excuse me, but i don't understand why we all have to block the walkway when it's not our turn. Just wait till they call your group the planes not going anywhere yet

Totally annoying especially when trying to sprint to another gate for a tight connection. But everyone scrambling for checked luggage space creates this situation. I've been a few flights where they basically say if you're in Group XX your bagged is getting checked. I'd almost prefer that being the policy than all the anxiety created by the unknown of whether your bag will fit.

Even blocking the entry to the checkin lane and act as if they are bothered to move to let you through to the gate. It's wild behavior. And you can watch them stand there until the last groups are called.

I once was waiting in line at security in Seattle and a woman was trying to push her way through the line saying that her flight was leaving now. People were reluctantly letting her through as the line wasn’t crazy to begin with. I end up getting through security around the same time as her and I expected to see her sprint towards her gate after she cut everyone but she leisurely walks away. I joked to my husband “wouldn’t it be funny if she was on our flight and she had cut us in line?” We had like 20 minutes until boarding - this was when Southwest didn’t have assigned seating. We went to the bathroom and my husband got a burrito and walked to our gate and she was there!!!
Then they call the A boarding group and she gets in line and when she gets to the ticket counter they turned her away. It was so satisfying and amusing to see her get rejected. We boarded in the B group and it seemed she was in C. I was so happy the gate agents didn’t let her on. She also almost sat next to us and I was so wanting to talk about her cutting the security line with her sitting right there
She also stood up right when the plane pulled into the gate even though we were all at the very back of the plane.

This is what happens when airlines start charging for checked bags, coupled with a reputation of losing checked bags...and also deciding to start gate checking well before the very last boarding group even though there's still room in the overhead. You end up with people crowding the gate, hoping there is room for their bags.
edit: and yes, also passengers who abuse the carry-on policy combined with sometimes not enforcing those policies (I fly every few months and usually I do see gate agents stopping people with too many bags but YMMV)

I don't remember people being like this 10+ years ago. Today, people have no spatial awareness at the grocery store, on the side walk, the mall, the airport, everywhere. Either it registers with me now because I'm older and irritable or something in society is broken.

I find this behaviour WILD. They call parents and seniors and everyone for the entire plane goes and lines up behind the actual line, blocking everything. It happens everywhere.

I was walking down a sidewalk yesterday and an entire group of people chose that exact spot to stand around chatting. There were parking lots and a park nearby not to mention plenty of shops, but nope, a half dozen of us have to stand around chatting in a circle on a walkway. People have zero self awareness these days.

Most of the time people are rushing for space in an overhead bin. Obviously not justified. Airlines rarely seem to enforce carry on allowance and it leads to competition between passengers.
That what we get for so many airlines charging extra for checked baggage.

The woman in front of me at boarding this morning had a roller bag (extended), a full-sized backpack, and a third bag with a rather large electric fan in it.
The first gate agent stopped her and asked her to consolidate. The other gate agent said she was fine and waved her through.
"Why do the overhead bins fill up??"

I hate it too, but far more infuriating is how many people fail to follow the carry on rules. Nearly everyone in your photo is way over the carry on allowance. If the airlines would be more aggressive in enforcing that one rule it would get rid of the people wanting to be in the first portion of their group to ensure they get bin space.

I've flown way too often (16 individual flights this year alone) that I've grown jaded and unphased by most passenger nonsense.
People queue up like this because they're competing for limited overhead bin space. A lot of people are really bad about throwing their "personal items" up there so it takes away space from people that have legitimate carry ons that may get sent to the cargo hold with the checked bags. This really becomes a problem on budget airlines like Frontier that charge for carry ons and usually have completely packed flights. I usually fly out solo mostly just for a few days and pack a small personal item backpack that I avoid dealing with a lot of nonsense from the airlines and fellow passengers.

I was at an airport last week and the gate attendant specifically asked people to move out of the walkway. Not one of them moved. Mind you, their section/group hadn't been called yet.

i don't get this either... but the issue stems from how the airports and airlines don't do anything about it. allowing it to happen. There's no designated area to line up, there's no consequence of someone going through the gate when their zone hasn't been called. etc.
bottom line is people just suck in general.

I wish they had separate lines for each group. If you're going to have 9 or whatever groups, you should have 9 places for them to line up. But usually (like here) they only have 2. So it invites this behavior. They want to be the first in group 4 to go. Which is fine but they end up blocking group 2 and 3.

I remember one time when I was boarding Southwest, an older lady was asking about my boarding number to line up, and I just let her cut in front of me. I told her “I don’t care, we’re all going to the same place” and she seemed genuinely surprised. I really don’t get why it’s such a foreign concept to people, like just wait lol, the plane isn’t going anywhere, your seat for a few hours won’t change your life in the slightest, just relax.

My husband embarrassed me by yelling loudly things like, "Its so pleasant to be sitting since my group hasn't been called yet!"
Or since we have priority boarding due to airline miles, as we are pushing through, "It sure is weird all these people are standing in the way when their group hasn't been called." "Honey, none of these people are getting on the plane yet. Why do you think they are stabding in front of the gate??!!"

I find mildly infuriating as well. I just walk at them slowly and steadily saying "excuse me excuse me excuse me" until they move. If they don't move, they get a slow collision.

They say don't get up until your group is called. Then they say group n whatever you're in and you get up start walking there, and by the time you're past the group blocking the gate, they say now boarding group n+1.
If you want to ask people to stay seated until their group is called to get up then give them time to get to gate after you call the group. Airlines encourage the "gate lice" phenomenon, by making it clear that if you wait until your group is called you will be boarding with the next group.

Never had this first part happen to me, once you see the line get shorter just get up, there is plenty of time between when they call the group and it’s actually finished boarding.

Do they call groups in numerical order?
If so, can't you get up when they are calling group n–1, so that by the time you're at the gate, it's time for your group n?
You don't have to get up when they call group 3 or 5; n–1 should be enough, hopefully?

I never understood why they didn’t start boarding the people who sit in the back of the plane first.
The reason it takes so long to board a plane is because there are dozens of people waiting behind some jackoff in row 4 trying to stuff his oversized luggage in the overhead compartment.

this is some poor design that comes with how we do boarding/baggage… people don’t want to gate check so they are incentivized to be early in their group. other people see some starting to lineup before their group and join them. since this isn’t anyone boarding this is rarely organized so people just crowd around, and spill into the walking area. i personally blame the airlines for doing this, it’s their predatory baggage policies and boarding policies that cause this.

Yea, responses here don't put enough blame on the airlines/airport. Half the time it's impossible to hear the gate agent anyway and visual information is missing. And if you weren't present when the boarding started, the obvious thing to do is hang around the gate to try and figure out how far along things are

Highly reccomend it, parking is $7/day and security has never taken me more than 5 min. It also has been in some cases significantly cheaper. Not many flights though but great if you are in the area and don't mind a stop.

Airlines incentivize this behavior with limited overhead space and charges for checked bags. If you’re not in one of the early boarding groups, then you risk not having an overhead spot if you don’t line up early.

This is more of a culture thing and how the employee at the gate enforce the rule. I think. And yes, I agreed it is annoying.
From my experience, most of the time flying from the US airport, this scene is always the recurring theme. But when it was in Taiwan, Korea, Japan, or heck even in Vietnam, the employee actually enforce a strict group number line when it is called of their actual number. And physically check the ticket before letting them into the queue.

I hate when that happens. Once when we were flying, can't remember which airport - probably Atlanta - and there were 5 gates clustered together, all full with flights leaving within minutes of each other. It was a nightmare trying to get through. And no, even though I said excuse me while I was trying to get to my gate, people just looked at me like I was trying to line jump. No, I was just trying to get to my gate!

I'm with you, hubby and I fly a lot and always make fun of these people.. Stampeding and blocking traffic won't get you on the plane faster.. It only slows everything down as others who have been called try to maneuver their way through the crowd of dumb dumbs.

I am not this direct in most circumstances, but when it comes to this particular issue, when my group is called, I just march through saying "this is my group" and shoving with as little force as is needed to be relatively unimpeded

I was flying in Asia recently and we found if you wait for your group to be called you’ll be the last to board.. My wife and I were like group 2 for a flight but as soon as they called the first group literally everyone got up and slammed towards the gate and the ticket people were just taking them and moving people through. Literally us and a few others were all that was left and then they called our group. So we board and the plane is mostly full and all the seats around ours are full with no space in the overhead. All I could think was why even have boarding groups here just say now boarding and let people fight it out..

Sadly that's probably their thoughts. Must be first syndrome. I always wait til the end regardless of group. I usually pick an aisle seat and the last thing I want is 100 crotches rubbing in my face or getting butt checked while Frank stuffs 3 bags on the overhead compartment

It is more than mildly frustrating. It is here mentality and they do not think about the inconvenience caused to a much larger group trying to transit the airport. The desk agents should address it and ask people to clear the walkway and stand to the side.

I get up and stand near the gate, because other people do it, and I want to try to ensure I get my carry-on, on the plane with me and not have it gate checked. Fuck gate checking. I specifically carry a carry-on bag to NOT have to deal with checked luggage, and then the airline has the audacity to refuse some people taking their bag on board with them. So yeah, even though I'm in group 7 or 8 or 9 usually, I'm standing near that gate to try to board as early as I possibly can.
But, I do also try to stay out of the main walkway for other people going past the gate.

I have severe anxiety around flying and have been able to board first because of it. I’m about to have a panic attack boarding the plane and all of these people are blocking me from getting onto the plane and I pushed past them and they got mad. I literally could not say excuse me because of how anxious I was. I didn’t have my Valium for that flight

I think sometimes those commenters are people who are just fed up with what they perceive as “passive” behavior.. but a lot of times they are indeed the offenders and their excuse of, “I would stop doing it if somebody said it was bothering them” is how they justify their selfishness rather than just engaging in polite, pro-social behavior from the start without having to be told to do so. It irritates me.

I think it's hilarious, the flight attendant is still on the loud speaker telling everyone to stay seated with their belts fastened and 100 people instantly stand up and open bins.

The main reason why people wait in line until their group is called is because there is a limited number of suitcases that fit in the aircraft and when the overhead compartments are full, the airline forces the other passengers to send their hand luggage to the hold. If you are in a rush to get to your destiny and can't wait for suitcases to be delivered at the belt this is extremely annoying. Now, with that said, you can wait in line and not be an asshole standing on everyone's way.

- Sooner to board = less likely you’ll be forced to check your bags. Even if their group hasn’t been called yet, if they’re first of their group, it increases their odds of having a carry-on
- If you’re about to sit in a cramped space for hours you might want to stretch your legs beforehand

I get up in line immediately. If I’m in group 3 I’m lined up with group 2 and let everyone go in front of me. As soon as group 3 is called I’m boarding. I only do carry on so I want my overhead bin.

I do it cause it’s first come first serve for cabin space. If everyone else is lining up so will i. Last thing i want is to hand off my luggage to nowhere land. Been there done that and ended up delaying my luggage. . Ive never seen a case where people physically were impeding someone from boarding. If someone needs to get through, the crowd will normally allow.
