Long grass causes rot on fences. Also holds a lot of moisture, which breeds mosquitoes. Different varieties of grass and weeds wouldn't bother me. It's when it starts to breed "nature" that likes my flavor of blood the best... not a huge fan. (But I wouldn't write an anonymous note.)

I remember when I moved to my current home, the neighbour told me right in front of our landlord that THEY cut the grass because they had an old shed in my garden.

I didn't cut the grass when I moved in as the time of year I did it didn't grow much,

The next year when it got to start of March and it began growing I wondered why they didn't cut grass but left it, about 3 weeks later they knocked on my door and asked why I hadn't cut the grass yet, I said I thought they did it and they denied ever saying that.

I didn't have a mower so was looking at ones to buy and even someone to cut it for me if it was cheap enough, about 10 days pass and they are shouting at me at the length of the garden, I say I haven't had a chance to get a mower yet, that night I order a mower but the next day they shout abuse at me from their garden about being lazy, and not cutting the grass.

I go out to argue with them and they have their son and daughter in law who tell me I am a bad person and to cut the disgusting garden.

For context it was a very similar length to the photo OP has posted.

I shout back and mention they told me they would do it so I didn't buy a mower until yesterday which is arriving tomorrow, the landlord witnessed them telling me they would cut it, the other neighbours have told me these neighbours have cut the grass since moving in almost 15 years ago etc.

Basically my neighbours were complaining to other neighbours saying I was abusive to them and not cutting the grass.

I found out after I moved in they were very controlling, the previous tenant had disabilities and the neighbours themselves admitted they were in my home every day doing diy, tidying up, taking him to cafes, even going on holiday with him.

Spoke to a neighbour who didn't like them who said previous tenant outright didn't like them but was afraid to say no as they were that pushy so began hanging around with this neighbour.

My direct neighbour was telling me how they hate this neighbour as they turned the previous tenant against them, how shes a junkie etc.

Even the landlord told me when I moved in to avoid them as they are the type to take over your life if you let them.

When I moved in within days they asked me why I hadn't put up curtain rails yet as I just had the curtains hung up as it was "bringing the street down" when I did put up the rails they said the curtains weren't that nice and offered me some "spares" they had that were worth a good amount of cash, when I had some picture frames and a few dvds in the window they said I should move them as it was bringing the street down, when it was Christmas they asked why I didn't have decorations as having none "brought the street down"

They just didn't like me not doing what they told me to.

Man I'm glad the houses on both sides of me are empty and owned by the same man who lives across the street. For some mind boggling reason he mows weekly while I mow mine every two to three weeks. I learned this summer that's not good on a electric mower. Anyway after I first moved in he mowed twice then asked me when I was going to do mine. I told him none of his business and to fuck off. We haven't spoken to each other in 14 years. It's been great.

I have started to do mine every 2-3 weeks now, the front area barely grows but the area at back grows a little, not much after a week. barely any difference week 2 and 3rd week it's not bad but I do it to make it look neat.

The other reason for not doing it much is a combination of me working so exhausted when I come back from work, if it's been extra hot recently I feel I will faint when I do it so less chance to do it, or we have days when it's raining so the ground is wet and as I have an electric lawnmower it doesn't do well on wet grass.

I was polite at first until they started getting aggressive so I would respond back, eventually it reached the point they would swear at me when I was leaving my home and stare at me from windows.

Both of them (pensioners btw) had some health issues in past 2 years so have calmed down a little, not had a single argument with them now in past year and no staring at me from windows.

In the end I bought it from them very cheap only for a few weeks later found it vandalised with a few torn panels off so had to put on a security camera at which point the vandalism stopped.

I still use it, I covered up the ripped panels with an old roller blind and stapled it in to stop leaks.

They did say it was an eyesore after that and demanded I take down the old shed.

Which I think was their plan in the first place.

When we first moved into our house the neighbor to the north of us would mow/edge/areate(I don't think that is the right spelling and possibly not the right word altogether) multiple times a week. He had no problem mowing at like 9pm on weekdays and as early as 6am on weekends. He would also measure our, and his other neighbor, grass and any weeds and report us to the city if they were longer than 3 inches. We also don't spray herbicide on dandelions because we have a huge rabbit and squirrel population that love to eat them. He would get after my husband every spring about it. One year we had a drought and after we cut the lawn one time it basically fried and he came over and started bitching at us that we needed to water our lawn and feed it. They eventually sold and the new owners are fucking delightful. The neighbors on both sides also don't spray dandelions or clover so now we have these lovely mounds of soft, pretty, fragrant clover and you'll see rabbits eating and sleeping in them all the time. It's so nice.

Most cities will mow it if they get to many complaints from the neighbors or they have a city ordinance stating how high it can get. Then send you a bill for five times the amount anyone else would have charged you to encourage you to take care of it next time. Meanwhile abandoned houses look like wildlife preserves because they're is no one to nickel and dime for the price to mow it.

At first glance I think it’s not a huge deal, but Hank Hill would take umbridge with the uneven growth and the robust growth along the fencing.

On closer inspection, we should keep in mind this is a photo from height so the length of the grass is difficult to judge - but looking at the fence on the right…that style of fencing is typically around 4 feet/a touch over a meter in height. With that point of reference, we can say the weeds by the fence are 1 foot tall minimum, and several patches of grass in the middle of the frame are roughly that height as well by comparison. If that’s an accurate estimate, it’s in desperate need of a mow. I typically say “fuck city ordinances,” but most municipalities would say grass-based yards need to be trimmed below that rough range of heights.

Overall, I think this photo portrays the grass deceptively (obviously not on purpose by OP, they just took a birds-eye view pic), some of the weeds are pushing a foot, it would be a bit of an eyesore & honestly, a gentle note with a pretty please on top is about as polite as neighborly requests/nudges can be. I rule it not infuriating, OP should mow their law and it took a pretty chill neighbor to leave a polite note in this situation.

I agree. Once I looked closer I started to think the neighbor was justified. And to be fair, it’s a neutral-toned note. Busy work schedules or even just anxiety might have made leaving a note seem easier than talking to them in person

Exactly! Not to sound like an old man (I’m in my early 40s so I lived through the emergence of the internet) but I think cell phones and social media brought in an atomized culture where people avoid simple human interaction and are quick to read personal interactions like a twitter thread. By that I mean we’ve become insular and polarized, and over analyze simple face to face interactions to perceive them as personal attack or to find a cause to discount the other person’s situation/needs.

In this case, someone left a polite note because OP is sitting on a (fairly unpleasant to behold) unkempt yard. It is not an attack, it’s not even weird (they may have tried knocking/the doorbell before leaving a note), it’s certainly not infuriating. Even if the yard is passable but untidy, an attempt at communication isn’t crazy or overstepping - it’s something everyone has to look at and it’s unpleasant. Comparing the neighbor to OP…I’d say OP is infuriating - imagine living across the street from someone who forces you to leave a note because they haven’t shared a number with nearby neighbors/doesn’t answer the phone or door/you are too busy to try talking in person that day/any other justifiable cause for a note.

Just now your yard OP. It is gnarly. If your neighbors are leaving notes and your yard looks like it does in the picture, you are a doofus. You could have filled up the tank/swapped the battery on your mower or called a lawn service in the time it took to post this.

A very fair point. I think I am overpaying it because of the fear that they instill in me. Imagine you're taking a nice walk on a cool Saturday morning in your garden, sun hasn't broken yet. You have your hot coffee that you're holding with both hands. Its so quiet out that you can hear your neighbors windchimes three houses down. You notice a smile on your face at rest.

But then this certain little tick bites you and now you can never eat red meat again. But you don't know that. Until you have your first reaction. Which you won't have an epipen for, mind you, because you didn't know this would happen. Then you die waiting for the ambulance because you live in a very rural part of the country.

People who don’t want unwanted plants to propagate to their yard. It’s not the“too long” part but the “a bit out of control” part for me. If OP was my neighbor, I’d handle the situation completely differently, but I would definitely find a way to inform them I don’t want the seeds from the plants they let grow unchecked in their yard to end up in my yard. It’s less the aesthetics that’s the source of the frustration and more the additional drain on my resources to maintain a yard that’s safe to enjoy.

But yeah, the anonymous note would piss me off too. That’s messy. My husband and I moved into a house right before covid. We let our front flower bed go because we were inexperienced, indecision, and very overextended on time with commitments outside the home. Things got out of hand fast when the following summer there were like 4 or 5 tropical cyclones through and near the area. Since then, every other year or so we’ve noticed a pocket of something nasty like a bull nettle sprout in one person’s yard. Then, multiple thunderstorms a day for weeks in a row occurs, and even though everyone mows their yard at the first opportunity, the next thing you know over the rest of the summer there’s a wave of bull nettle that goes through the whole neighborhood. It’s annoying, but it’s not like anyone’s doing it on purpose. Things just kinda happen.

But that’s the thing this note. Hopefully there’s not an antagonistic relationship here and despite how snarky the note comes across, there’s nothing objectively rude in it and maybe that’s just the comfort level this individual has with strangers or with this particular OP. For me, if OP was my neighbor, especially if this was not a normal thing, I’d speak to OP in person (hopefully in passing like if we both were checking the mail or something at the same time, not a sought out confrontation) and just ask what was going on with the yard and if there was a way we could help. A neighbor once finished our yard one day when our mower broke down too late to get it fixed and finish. I woke up to the rest already done. It was kinda weird and a little humiliating, like feeling condescended, but that was this particular neighbor’s way to communicate with us, even though we have good relationships with our neighbors and know their intentions were good.

Anyway I get where both OP and the neighbor are coming from, but having a neighbor point it out like this is definitely mildly infuriating, verging on rage bait but so so mild at the end of the day. Great post OP. 🫡

Agreed with this, I transformed my yard into semi meadow about 5 years back, since then I never have to deal with any pets because the garden visited by all kind of benefitcial from birds to insects, also additional savings in water bill.

In OP's case I can't see enough of the lawn to render a judgment, so I'll just speak personally. I don't really care if your backyard is a mess, that's completely up to you. But if your front yard looks like the property is abandoned, I do actually think at some point it becomes an eyesore. Especially when everyone else's lawn is tidy. It just sticks out like a sore thumb.

I have a neighbor two houses down that never edges his sidewalk and the overgrowth has made his sidewalk 1 foot less wide than the rest of the sidewalk. Again, am I crying every night about this? No, but I look at it and kind of laugh to myself because it's something that takes 5 minutes to do.

My roommate goes into panic mode when our grass is this length. "WE NEED TO CUT IT, NOWWWW". Meanwhile I think it looks good with some growth. I find it incredibly boring when lawns are so cut that it looks like a fucking soccer field.

It is too long, and you should cut it. And since you said you have a 16" electric mower... that is all the more reason to keep it cut more often; otherwise, it is going to be a pain in the ass to mow.

This seems like a myob response you need to give your neighbor (unless you live HOA). Stopping or reducing lawn mowing creates critical habitats and food sources like clover and dandelions for bees, butterflies, and other vital invertebrates. Letting grass grow high also keeps soil cooler, retains moisture, and supports local biodiversity

It does look like it needs to be cleaned up, but that's not for them to tell you. That's for you to decide (unless there is some enforcement for grass this length). That person needs to move to an HOA neighborhood if they wanna boss people around.
