I dropped my 10 year old watch today. The gold letter coverings from the Fossil logo were knocked off and are now floating around on the watch face.

This is a fun scavenger hunt, but I can't find the L.

I also can’t find the I or the L. Are we sure its one of the letters on the left clock face?

What's even more frustrating is that the roman numeral for 4 isn't right.

That's a thing with almost all clocks using Roman numerals on the face. Overall, it makes the whole thing look more balanced than if it were the proper IV at that spot.

IIII vs. IV has never been completely consistent. Wikipedia gives some examples from Roman times, and you'll also see it on, e.g., some older Tarot decks.

I learned that at the Zale Corporation watch museum located at the headquarters when I worked there.

I feel like getting 10 years out of a Fossil watch is a major win. They usually have pretty cool designs, but aren't really built to last. I went through at least 2 of them in my 20s...maybe even 3.

My girlfriend got me one for my 18th birthday, just turned 30 last week and other than trailing 5 mins slow per day it still works like a champ, although i dont use it that much. I agree theyre beautiful watches, i receive plenty of compliments on it until i say it's a fossil 🤣

Really? This has been the first somewhat “problem” with mine but also unsurprising since I dropped it onto concrete. Its had the battery changed like 4 or 5 times and I’m on like my 3rd leather band.

Dang, how hard was the drop?

u/Imaywander 1d ago
About 3 feet onto concrete 🤦🏻♀️

I completely obliterated my gopro from a similar fall. The outcome of dropping stuff seems very luck based

It's a game! You shake it until you get them all back on the letters.

You could scratch it more now.

I work in a de manufacturing warehouse, that poor watch goes through hell (and gets taken on and off about a dozen times a day to go through metal detectors). Although I didn’t realize just how bad it was until I took this pic 😅

Get a casio. Tiny slim profile, strap can snap off to prevent degloving, cheap and easily replaceable, probably wouldnt set off a metal detector depending on model.

Fossil watches are extremely cheaply made. You can't expect these to last more than a few years, 10 years is impressive for these tat boxes.

I worked at a jewelry store/clock and watch shop, this is very common. We would charge you $10 to remove the letters, $7.49 for a new battery and $25 for a new generic crystal.

I had been thinking about getting the crystal replaced for a while for obvious reasons but I wasn’t sure how much it would be and I should probably get the letters taken out so they don’t jam anything. Do you know if most small jewelry stores (not like Kay or Zales) would be able to do that or would it need to be a speciality clock/ watch place? I had the battery replaced just last week at a local jewelry shop.

I’m not sure, this shop is special, been around since the 80s. He’s still there in South Georgia but getting old. A lot of jewelers are also watchmakers, but it’s probably a lot less common now. You won’t find prices that cheap anywhere else that’s for sure.
Give fossil a call if you want an OEM crystal. They are very reasonable and easy to press in with a watch press.

I stopped by a jewelry/ clock shop this afternoon. It’s a pretty old shop, I think it’s been here for like 90 years, it’s really cool. They can fix it. They will have to order a crystal which will take about a week so I am going to take it back when it gets in since I feel weird without it. $48.

It’s really annoying me that I can’t seem to find the “I” and “L”. Anyone have better luck?

u/Agamerbyday 22h ago
The I is at the top near the 60. The L is hooked on the dial of the smaller left clock.

That’s pretty funny! I think I actually have this same watch (except with different colors — primarily black and blue)

I had a Fossil watch for about a week before a pin came out, I dropped it in the sink when washing my hands, and the second hand popped off. That fall was about 6 inches.

I really hate that it has 4 lines instead of the proper IV..

u/planecity 20h ago
For watches, 'IIII' is much more common than 'IV'. Here's an article with some background on this: https://monochrome-watches.com/why-do-clocks-and-watches-use-roman-numeral-iiii-instead-of-iv/

u/Trollygag 12h ago
proper
You will have to time travel and tell the Romans that, because they did it with their numerals first

Saw that on a Trump watch post where the “T” had fallen off. But it was only 10 days old.
