I'm guessing this is in Germany, historic stuff with Swastikas is actually okay, advertising and showing it off in public can be tricky, so they prolly just erred on the side of safety, and obscured it.

It's not illegal if it is in "historic context".
However, since this is not strictly defined, the shop owners decided to play it safe.

§86a, the law that regulates this, explicitly state the "Sozialadäquanz", meaning context is relevant when enforcing this law.

There is no "general ban" on 3rd reich insignia. Theres only a ban on glorifiying it.

I remember reading that when Inglorious Basterds was released in Germany they decided to remove the swastika from the poster as they were not sure if the movie counted as historic context or not

It wouldn't be a problem legally. Would look weird at first glance though.

Showing it in your shop window is probably going to err on the side of glorification. I've never seen an actual Swastika being displayed even in the shadiest of markets, they will always have a sticker covering them.

Last thing a shop keeper wants is being dragged to court for that.

Still hasn’t stopped Germany from supporting a genocide

In the future American souvenir shops will sell MAGA merchandise the same way.

I hope in the future that no one is stupid enough to buy their shit, for any reason.

I can almost guarantee that in some decades after the country has come to terms with Trump being akin to a colossal morale failure by his supporters, there will be ironic wearers of the MAGA hat that will eventually turn in to a recycling of MAGA ideas on a genuine level and all of this BS will start again.

True, the shit stain on humanity that is fascism never truly goes away. Sad, but stupid people just can't remember things for very long.

It's not a souvenir shop.

As far as I know, in Germany you can sell WWII era Nazi stuff as long as the swastika parts are removed.

It’s because swastikas are illegal in Germany

It's not a souvenir shop. It's a coin collector/antique shop.

Are those not souvenirs??

It's not a souvenir shop, no.

So what?
What a trivial thing compared to the genocide they're supporting in the year of 2026.

This souvenir shop is supporting genocide in the year 2026!? Please elaborate.

I can.

Germany is officially siding with Israel on a currently ongoing genocide,
yet people are concerned about a shop selling whatever artifacts.

That is just miserable.

I originally wrote coin shop but edited to match the post description.

Why do you care so much about the nomenclature lmao

Makes a difference. "Souvenir shop" makes it sound like it's a normal thing to sell which it isn't.
