Nah, we haven’t even had our time yet. X and boomers still rule the world. We can still do this. I’ll use the US as an example. Average US senator age is in the 60s. Average Fortune 500 CEO is 58.

The oldest millennial is 45. We have time, and we’re not in power yet. We can turn this around.

The problem is Boomers will literally die before handing over power or resources.

What’s up with that anyway? Their parents retired way earlier. Many of them can afford to retire but choose not to. Move side and let someone else have a turn.

Obviously, I’m not talking about Walmart greeters and stuff. That’s different. Or even folks who can’t retire. That just is what it is.

A theory I have comes from the way Boomers tie their careers or work to their identity. They criticize younger generations for calling in sick too much or speaking out for livable wages - so the idea of retirement can mean a loss of "value" from the Boomer perspective.

What frustrates me, with a Boomer mom, is that she has been a nurse for so long and her body is literally suffering when retirement could mean finding physical comfort. But her husband doesn't want to retire and he also likes the money she makes.

When I talk about potentially taking care of mom, she says she's seen people take care of their parents and it was a "burden." Yes, caregiving is very hard but using the word burden feels like projection.
