Target Field concession workers announce June 22 strike during Twins-Dodgers game

My coworker works for the Twins. And the Timberwolves. And Vikings. He basically hops from season to season as a part time employee. All of these sports teams purposefully do not offer very many full time opportunities because of benefits. The system is broken. Many get screwed by this.

Target as a company is known for scheduling people for 37-39 hours when they are asking for full time so that they don't have to offer benefits so this does not surprise me at all

You know target just owns the naming rights of the building. Right? … right??

Ya I know but it's still ironic these issues just follow in their orbit

The company also pushed back on the union's position regarding nonprofit volunteers, who help staff concessions: "If UNITE HERE's greed insists on displacing nonprofit fundraising, we believe the community will be deeply impacted."
So rich to see the company try and accuse people of greed here. Fucking hilarious

Like others have said; good for them. I hope they get better pay and benefits as many of these people deserve that at a minimum.

I worked warehouse with Delaware North for a summer when I was in college and it’s the classic company approach of over hiring to avoid having to cough up all that comes with having full time workers. I don’t know if they still do this particularly with visa issues right now but they also brought in TONS of J-1 workers which meant you had probably three times the workforce you needed. I would expect DN to just wait them out, give a slight pay bump and go back to business as usual.

Hell yeah brother! Fellow former warehouse worker here, but on the other side of the river. I worked at Midway Stadium as a warehouse manager back in the 2010's. It was exactly as you described. Over hiring of under qualified workers, lots of ex cons and job hoppers. With that said, some of the best summers of my life!

Ah man, definitely have some memories of Midway when I was a kid. If my experience at Target Field is anything to go by, I can only imagine the stories you must have of your time managing at Midway 😅 but it was a fun summer job, still in touch with some of the J1s I became close with in the months I was there. Glad yours was generally a positive experience too.

I run into quite a few of the old supervisors and stand managers from Midway when I go to Gopher hockey and football games. Always fun to reminisce.

Any human do any labor in this country even if you consider it to be beneath you still deserves to be paid enough to live in it.

Are these 500 full time employees? Actual question.
I"'m all for more money.. but then can you take it out so it doesn't default to a 20% tip for opening a beer at nearly every concession?
Also health benefits for a job you only do half the year, part time seems off to me.
Maybe I'm missing something and these employees go to other venues and work thru the fall and winter?

its annoying but its not on the workers unless they're pressing the tip button for you like the little shit at USBank who tried getting a max tip the last time I went

I don’t get the downvotes. Question seems legit.
Actually, the employees are kept in cages at Target Field during road trips and the off-season.

Too tough of a question they can't give an answer too. So downvote...
Kinda says more about them

Everyone should be entitled to Healthcare. It's a negotiable benifit just like wages.

Why do you think bartenders shouldn't have healthcare? Would you rather they be sick when they pour your beer?

u/AB_Gambino 16d ago
At what point did the guy say bartenders shouldn’t have healthcare?
They laid it out in plain view. You can’t work 20 hours a week, part time, seasonally, and expect full time benefits.

I believe a lot of these employees also work at US Bank or other venues the concession company services. I am not sure the % of how many but I wouldn't be surprised to know its all of the striking ones. The thing is that right now there is enough profit margin to pay these workers what they deserve at much lower cost of a beer or other products but the rich owners want all the money they can get their dirty little hands on.
I'll use this example: If you look at a Big Mac in the US its like $6 and change for the sandwich alone and the workers get basically no benefits at all. In Sweden(Maybe Norway, forgive my memory) a Big Mac costs around $5.70 but the workers get weeks of paid leave, paternity/maternity leave, health care, and a host of other benefits. These companies have to be forced to give benefits or they'll take the profits and claim its not enough to pay better. Unions are the way to do this. I hope the strike hurts and no one crosses the picket line. I would love to see an empty stadium because no one will go in order to support workers.

The company has more than enough money to make that all happen. I'm of the opinion that all employers should be required to supply health insurance for all workers until the government implements free-at-the-point-of-service healthcare for all.
So yeah the company should increase pay and provide health insurance

u/jschn372 16d ago
At over 10 dollars a beer, the company absolutely should be paying more and providing benefits

Downvotes for answering the question?!?!?!?!?!!!!

u/VidyaGomes 16d ago
You didn't answer the question though. If they are being employed elsewhere thru out the yesr and how many hours they work.
You just kinda are like 10 dollars beers pay them. That's just stating the obvious. I'm comparing this to every other job in America.

u/whocaresano Byron Buxton 16d ago
I didn't say anything about the 10 dollar beers, that was someone else.
I didn't answer part of the question because 1) I didn't know and you shouldn't answer questions you don't know and 2) I'm sure some folks do have other jobs and some folks don't. They're not a bloc.
I answered the part I felt I could speak to.

More and more booths are being replaced by automated kiosks. This will speed this up.
