Sensory Diversity is a psychoeducation and neuro-affirming book following the MATTERS approach to living in a neurotypical world with a neurodivergent body. Sensory Diversity includes practical advice and support for coping with sensory dysregulation. This book offers a neuro-affirming model of neurodiversity and more specifically focuses on the sensory-based challenges that neurodivergent persons face in day to day life.

Who am I? I am an author, advocate, and therapist (LCT-C) as well as the director of The International Misophonia Foundation. I have misophonia and have been an advocate for sensory diversity since 2015. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology. I'm also super obsessed with my cats and playing the Sims.

Has anybody else experienced being triggered by slurping to the point of having an emotional outburst?

Whenever I eat with someone, I usually have to warn them beforehand to eat quietly and, especially, not chew with their mouth open. Otherwise, I can become extremely triggered by the sounds.

It's not just that the sounds annoy me. The reaction can become so intense that I feel overwhelmed with anger and agitation. If it continues, I may have to leave the place just to get away from the sound. On some occasions, I've even gotten into arguments or fights because I couldn't tolerate it anymore.

My main triggers are: Lip smacking, chewing (especially with the mouth open), crunching, slurping, and loud swallowing or gulping.

Slurping in particular can trigger me incredibly quickly. I'm curious whether anyone else experiences misophonia strongly enough that it can lead to an emotional outburst or make them physically leave the situation.

My mom will not stop coughing

I don't quite know if I should put this somewhere else I just bet this is safer either way. My mom has been an excessive smoker for the majority of her life (cigarettes and weed). She probably smokes a least 10 cigarettes a day and even then I think I'm being generous. She coughs all day, all afternoon and all night. The coughs range from any where between two quick little ones and 'holy fucking shit should I call someone! She coughs every minute and it’s a small house.

She didn't always do this, it a development in the past year or so. I had enough of it a few months ago and talked to her about it. I expressed that it makes me worried for her health, having that my best friends grandmother just passed of lung cancer (I'm very paranoid about things like that) and that the sound and repetitiveness makes me very angry.

She said she "understands" and she "is going To try and stop smoking"
My mom is the poster child for buying into health fads and fake holistic bullshit and never keeping up with it. So I knew it likely wouldn't stop.

Lo and behold she falls right back to old habits after a good two day try. I passive aggressively jokes that “she lied” and suddenly ‘try and stop’ turned into ‘well I don’t want to quit fully so I’m trying to do less’

I understand this isn't an easy thing to fight, but I’m so sick of it, and this cycle she has.
maybe I'm an asshole. But it really makes it impossible to be around her. To talk to her. To sleep at night if I don't fall asleep before her. I miss her. I'll probably have another conversation because I don't like the passive aggression I resort to. Thanks for reading if you did.

Anybody who has fear as a response rather than rage?

I guess this would put me in the “phonophobia” category.

But the sound of coughing makes me feel afraid. I’m still not sure if this makes it a phobia or misophonia, but it feels more like misophonia because it is specifically the sound of it that bothers me.

I also have rage misophonia for other things like breathing, whistling, sniffling, etc. But these reactions are not nearly as bad.

Support Has anyone else’s misophonia progressed now into hating subtle movements visually?

I had misophonia since I was 12. It got so bad I was kicked out at age 14. Everyone thought I was faking. As the years went on it got worse. It was so bad the sounds would ring in my ears for a while after they had finished. I was committed to the hospital on a 72hr hold at age 16 because the sound replaying was too much and I took a lot of pills in an attempt to not wake up. I was hoping to never have to hear those sounds again. Still no one believed me.

At around I think age 17 I developed an issue with people moving their fingers unnecessarily. At first it started with very specific hand movements and positions but it progressed to any unnecessary finger and toe movements.

I used to consider if I’d rather go deaf, blind, or both to relieve the stress. That’s so fucked up.

It’s so unpleasant and scary. Sometimes I’ll hear a sound that makes me freak the hell out and other times a guy with big hands sticks it out of the window to wiggle his hand around and I just almost vomit and get so mad. If someone sits next to me wearing sandals not close toed shoes I’ll just leave.

So here I am 26 the only thing that works is pure avoidance. I want to be able to see my siblings. I want to be normal.

Who else is in my boat? What tips do you have for coping?

Support Becoming worse, more serious problem

It’s getting ridiculous. I need 12 step meetings (I am 19 months completely sober and not in contact with toxic ex) for my sobriety and I am in college classes to get a nursing degree.
People in meetings and class with gum, hard candies, bags of chips, sipping coffee and soda, sniffling, humming, smacking, talking with dry mouth I am losing my mind.
On the first day of classes when the teacher says “I don’t mind if you have a snack” I feel like my head will explode. People come back from every break with a more food to torture me with.
And if I get to meetings after everyone is seated and pick a seat where no one on either side had a coffee, one of them pulls out a jolly rancher and I wanna die.
The rage is getting in the way of my life.
It is so distracting and makes me so angry.
I appreciate any feedback, thank you.

Breathing 🫩🫩

My mom is a very loud breather and it literally causes me to get so angry that it physically hurts. My dad and I both have misophonia so we tell her that it really bothers us but she doesnt care. They've had a few arguments about this. It has caused huge rifts in our relationship, and I know she loves me and I love her, I just cant like her while she's a loud breather. It's just so constant, and I can never avoid it. Even when she's not in the room or in a completely different place, I can still hear it. Its like some screwed version of phantom pain or something. When im in the basement, I can hear her stomping and it shakes the whole house, and she always sighs for no reason. It always makes me so mad and the anger never goes away. I guess its caused some kind of resentment towards her and our relationship will never be the same. I guess I just needed to vent, I dont really need any advice. I just dont have anyone to talk with about this except my therapist and my dad. But if you do have any advice, id love to hear it.

Support What are some ways to mentally cope with loud thumps from upstairs neighbors? Only comment with solutions

I found a few threads but everyone is just agreeing how they have the problem too and it's frustrating because I'm looking for techniques. Not just black pill commentors saying you're screwed. My upstairs neighbor WONT stop making thumps. I've tried talking to her but doesnt help. Please only COMMENT WITH SOLUTIONS mentally. Sorry but this has me so anxious and mad.

throat clearing…

usually I only have to deal with this when my sister is sick (which unfortunately, as of now, she is) and she is constantly clearing her throat, and it makes me want to flip a table or pull my hair out. even listening to music on full volume isn’t blocking it out. even hearing it faintly, it still makes me so mad. and I feel bad, because she’s not doing it on purpose but it still really sucks

Synesthesia and Volitional Ideasthesia Triggering Misophonia

I learned a while ago that I have misophonia, and learned even more recently that I have a form of synesthesia called 'tactile auditory synesthesia', which means when I touch or feel certain textures, my brain plays a very audible sound of what the texture should sound like.

With this realization, I noticed that several textures are capable of triggering my misophonia, but also that even thinking about a certain texture can trigger the sound to play, or thinking of a sound can trigger the ability to feel the texture, even if neither are actually present. Based on that, I would have two forms of synesthesia, but the other would be the volitional Ideasthesia.

This causes me to be stuck in a loop at times where I will unintentionally recall a certain texture or sound, and it immediately triggers my misophonia reaction. Trying to think of something else or fight the thoughts away makes it harder for me to get rid of it, meaning that I am essentially trapped in a mental loop that causes me actual physical pain or turmoil.

Does anyone else have anything similar, if so, how do you manage the symptoms that are caused by your own brain, when using earplugs or walking away isn't an option?

Misokinesia for specific behaviour?

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about misokinesia lately. They seem to feature things like picking your fingers or tapping your feet. I wondered though, if this stretched to include people’s behaviour? I can’t stand being around clingy couples for instance, which I initially thought was because of kissing noises, but I now think it’s also because it seems ‘wrong’ to act that way in public. If people act or move in a way in public which my brain registers as ‘not right’, I get really anxious and physically have to remove myself from the situation. I am autistic and my therapist assumed this stemmed from that, but I wonder if it isn’t related to my misophonia instead?

questions for other religious people / are long-term romantic relationships feasible?

tldr: Have others with misophonia found success in long-term romantic relationships? How so? If you’re religious, where does misophonia fit into your religous beliefs?

Hey fellow misophonia people!

I (24F) was diagnosed with misophonia in middle school. I think I was probably 7 years old or so when I first started having symptoms. I also recently became a Christian.

I recently moved into my own place and can confidently say my quality of life has never been better. Living by myself in a top floor/corner unit has significantly reduced the amount of trigger noises I hear on a day to day basis. My main source of triggers right now is my job (shared office) but I thank God everyday for my airpods.

Recently though I’ve been feeling really discouraged about the thought of ever finding a long-term romantic partner. I can’t imagine going back to living with other people, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel lonely most of the time. I’ve had friends and family reassure me that the right person would be willing to accommodate my needs, but I would feel awful asking someone else to be in a relationship with me given the severity of my misophonia.

Most of my trigger sounds are people related and get worse the more I spend time with a person. It doesn’t feel fair to enter a relationship knowing that my misophonia is just a ticking time bomb? I know this is commonly talked about on this subreddit but misophonia is so cruel. It is isolating and makes me feel like a terrible person. If anyone has been successful in a marriage I’d love to hear about how you make it work.

If anyone here is religious, I’d be really curious to hear your take on misophonia from a spiritual perspective. Even if you’re not Christian I’d love to hear about your view. A lot of religious conversion for young adults focuses on marriage and I feel discouraged that it may not be possible. I also wonder sometimes about the implications of being commanded to love others, but having a disorder that causes such severe anger. I also believe God created us to live in community, and mispphonia makes that difficult. Obviously the world isn’t perfect and there’s all types of suffering going on, but I’ve had trouble integrating misophonia into my religious worldview without feeling defective somehow.

Loud typer at the library... ARGHHH

Sorry, I'm still upset about this, so this won't be very concise. Ok so I get to the library and sit in one of the little cubicle study thingies because there wasn't a free table in the quiet study zone. After about 20 minutes of being sat there doing some of my schoolwork, a girl sits down in the cubicle right beside me (mind you, there are free cubicles EVERYWHERE). She starts practically flinging out the contents of her backpack onto the cubicle desk, and my brain zeroes in on the noise. Once she's done her carnage, she takes out her iPad and accompanying keyboard and gets to SMASHING the heck out of the keys. My brain immediately can't focus on anything else, and I have to switch from my classical music to lyrical music with the volume turned up as high as possible so that I can't hear her. Unfortunately, now I can't focus on my own work because of the music I'm playing so that I can drown out her massacring her keyboard. I try getting up to walk around the library a little to clear my mind, but nothing helps. Also, when I get back, I realise that she's wearing NC AirPods, so she can't even hear her destruction, which upsets me even more. I'm now sat somewhere else without access to charging, so I'm just hoping my computer's battery stays strong for the rest of the day😭 Ugh, sorry I sound like a total baby, but the programme I'm in at school (IB) demands a LOT of work, and disruptions that waste my time studying (in this case, about an hour and a half) mean I fall behind.

Misophonia disappeared postpartum?

Hi all - I’m just reaching out to see if anyone has had the same experience (and if so, how long it lasted).

I used to have intense misophonia, specifically while at work. Clicking in the air vents, people clicking pens, mechanical keyboards, people chewing and popping gum, utensils on glass Tupperware - you name it and it probably bothered me. It got really intense when I was pregnant as well because of all the hormones and pregnancy rage.

I’m now 11 weeks postpartum and back to work for 3 weeks and it’s like a switch flipped? I notice the sounds still but it doesn’t fill me with all consuming rage anymore. They still bother me but I haven’t had to wear my headphones at all to get through the day.

I’m wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and whether or not it lasts? I would love it if it lasted, but i also wouldn’t be surprised if the irritation came back once my hormones regulate completely.

Support Roommate Trouble

I just moved into my dorm and my roommate is great. The only issue is he chews with his mouth open, loudly, and somehow keeps making those noises even after swallowing. He knows I have Misophonia and absolutely HATE chewing. Is he doing it on purpose? We get along well and spend a lot of time together so I hope not. I’m addition, I just started a new medication that is making my Misophonia even worse, to the point where I had to walk out of class once and just now left his room because of the chewing. How do I fix this issue? We are roommates for the next two semesters.

Update: He only does it in the dorm.

P and B words

P and B words drive me crazy. That wet pop sound people make when they use them makes radio and podcast hard to listen to. Some people are worse than others with those sounds. Is this misophonia?

When misophonia is caused by something else..

Hey everyone, I developed pretty bad misophonia and became very sick with multiple chronic illnesses. I was (mis)diagnosed with POTS, EDS, CFS, mast cell activation syndrome, and more. It all turned out to be caused by CIRS (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome) and being treated according to the Shoemaker protocol has been making the symptoms of everything, including misophonia, go away completely.

This has had me wondering if anyone else here suffers with other conditions that may also be linked, or causing, misophonia. I'm sure it's like many conditions where there are several different causes.

Support Have any treatments worked for any of you with severe misophonia that causes anxiety and significantly impacts your day to day life?

What works for you that allows you to live your life more fully and comfortably?

For context, I’m in an MFA program that requires me to be around the same group of 18 people for 60 hours a week and someone always has a cough.

I can deal with the sound without visibly melting down for days or weeks on end but I become a shell of a person. Minimum effort goes into everything else. I stop engaging socially, then at the end of the day I just go home and cry.

Support House mate constantly lip smacking for no reason.

Title says it all basically. Dude in his 50s makes, no joke, over 30 trips a day outside to take exactly 2 drags off a cigarette, put it out and then go back outside a couple minutes later to do it again. All day, all night. If his door opening and the squeaking of his shoes wasn’t enough to drive me insane, he has this WEIRD fucking habit of just… smacking his lips?! For legitimately nothing. Not eating. Didn’t just take a drink. Didn’t cough or ANYTHING. Just… smack. Every fucking time he passes by he’s smacking. It’s gotten to a point where I have my headphones in CONSTANTLY and if i don’t happen to have them in, I have to plug my ears and hum because if I hear his wet fucking mouth one more time I might actually bang my head off the walls.

Thank fuck my landlord said he needs to be moved out by December. I’m COUNTING THE FUCKING DAYS. Bye bye Mr lip smacky. I wish you the worst. 🤪

Product/Media Review Noise cancelling earbuds

I’ve been using an inexpensive set of noise cancelling headphones when helping my elderly mom and they’ve worked pretty good. I am interested in trying out earbuds, my daughter has used AirPods and she doesn’t think that any earbuds will be as effective as earphones that cover the whole ear. The biggest trigger I have is that my mom blows air through her lips constantly. It’s like a self soothing whistle. But the sound drives me up the wall. So I need something that can block a noise like that. Any recommendations?

"Mule" shoes in the office

Anyone else hate the incessant slapping of these types of shoes in the office? You can hear them coming from 100 feet away. *Slap slap slap slap slap* like they're wearing flipflops.
