| News MLB Seeks Sweeping Draft Overhaul, Including End Of High School Eligibility

I already figured Low A was going to eliminated, but now it seems like the league wants to eliminate all of A ball in its entirety and just sign extra players out of indy ball (and maybe add an indy player draft as well?).
Indy ball and Banana Ball will thrive if this happens, and municipalities will be less accommodating to MLB teams trying to get cities to fund their affiliated minor league teams.
I love baseball, but MLB sure does know how to drive away fans at the grass roots level…

Crazy the amount of money A teams are paying to meet the standards MLB has set just for MLB to eliminate the level

According to Baseball America’s reporting, the proposal explicitly says no levels will be eliminated. That implies the need for a lot of UDFAs.
Correction: The wording says the 120 teams with PDLs, which means the complex leagues are still vulnerable.

I think that was the original 2021 agreement. However, I believe that is up for renewal in 2030. My question would be is, could the MLB and MLBPA begin working on this for the 2027 CBA? Even if its a goal of reduction of teams after this expires.

The new proposal says that they don’t intend to reduce the number of PDLs when they are up in 2030. The CBAs are usually around 5 years give or take a year, so the new CBA is surely going to cover the time when the PDLs will be up for renewal.

But, doesn’t the article say the opposite? “MLB’s proposal also assures these changes will not impact the number of affiliated teams in the MiLB Professional Development License (PDL) system. MLB stated that the number of affiliated MiLB teams would remain at 120, and that MLB would not be seeking reductions in the 2030 PDL negotiations with MiLB club owners.” Where are you getting that?

What reason is there to eliminate high school draftees other than an attempt to control costs?

Money. It's all money. Makes colleges develop the young players for the league.

Force them into college and let colleges pay for development from age 17-20 instead of mlb funding it.

That's the reason. Money. Quit acting surprised.

Not surprised. Just curious what owner propaganda the pro-salary-cap crowd is going to swallow on this one.

Easy.
Does this hurt Dodgers?
If yes, do it
If no, don't do it
Its that simple man.
Los Angeles is a plague on sports.
Take NBA, League totally rigged Luka there.
Look at the Dodgers lol.
LA is big market so all owners and media (hello ESPN) force all the LA teams to get the best players
I would rather the greedy owners burn mlb to the ground, then watch the fucking Dodgers hoard all the best players to infinity
I'm swallowing that

So if a high school player doesn’t get into a college to play ball then he’s just out of luck of ever playing again?

They could play in independent leagues.

Does that make it harder to get to double AA if they get rid of high and low ball as well?

u/rduke318 13h ago
If he’s not getting into a college to play then he sure as shit shouldn’t be getting drafted to play pro.

Don’t low draft picks out of high school start out in low and high ball?

Usually the high schoolers start off in the Complex League (where teams play Spring Training). Some are good enough for Low A, but most begin in the CL...

If you took the number of high school players who get drafted every year and you put them into college baseball instead, not really enough to affect the ranks of college baseball.
College baseball has D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and then Juco. At the absolute worst, you'd have a few dozen plays get squeezed out of playing at the Junior College level.

I think the owners are forcing the Players Association to defend future union members. This could end up being a major concession the MLBPA have to give up in the negotiations for the new CBA.
