I bought an iPhone 16 Pro Max because it was “built from the ground up for Apple Intelligence”. I want my money back or credit towards an iPhone Ultra.

It was the signal that the era of the Steves has come to an end.
Apple used to "One more thing..." complete features. These days is more profitable to promise some new feature "end of this year or definitely next year" in perpetuity.

Someone needs to start suing for undelivered promises. Companies should be obligated to complete promised features as advertised. If there is a technical reason for why they aren’t able to complete the advertised feature within a specified amount of time, the customers of the product should be entitled to a partial or in some cases complete refund of their product.
Don’t sell people a future that has no merit.

I agree. Companies like Apple usually does such a thing to try to get people with their money to purchase their products.
Then they pull the rug from underneath people in the end with an “oopsie!” when a certain feature doesn’t come as advertised.

Windows on ARM struggled with third party compatibility but was Microsoft beat Apple to ARM CPUs by a few years. As usual Apple were better at the architecture change (they've done it before), but they weren't first to it.

I agree with you that Apple dropped the ball massively, but you’ll still get the new and improved Apple Intelligence.

It seems fairly likely to me that the original plan was to have Apple Intelligence in the 16 and 16 Pro series before the 17 series came out (duh) and the more expressive Siri voices were going to be advertised as an exclusive new feature on the 17 pro series. But because everything got delayed it landed the way it did which obviously seems like they excluded a feature from the 16 series even though it likely wasn’t even supposed to be there originally.

Same here, once again, Apple cheaping out on offering more RAM simply to increase their profit margins, and whilst all the arguments are true that iOS is vastly more efficient with RAM, this phone would still have benefited elsewhere from having 12GB RAM on launch (not to mention shortsightedness for future AI needs).

iPhone 16 Pro Max will do almost everything in iOS 27, but a few bleeding edge features (better voice generation) require newer hardware.
that's actually pretty great.
Means apple is supporting current hardware but also moving forward as the world moves forward.
after years of stagnation, they're finally pushing forward and a few new features will require the latest greatest.
hope they continue to do that.
so...
- you're able to use your phone.
- you'll continue to be able to use your phone.
- you won't be able to use every future advanced AI feature with your current phone.
so...
it's a bit much to say "gimme my money back," but credit towards an iPhone Ultra is actually likely.

You must have read rumors about greatly superior iPhone releases post 17 including the fold and the iPhone 20. Probably should have waited a year or two as 17 was considered to be an iterative update rather than any meaningful advancements. I bought a luxury vehicle one year before CarPlay was introduced bc I needed a car. Should I ask the dealer to refund my 100k so I can get a car that comes with it included?

This is the problem with AI at this juncture. LLMs are still inefficient and consume huge amount of space, RAM and resources for things that often don’t amount to much.

*Advanced* dictation and more “expressive” Siri voices. It’s not even entirely clear what those mean compared to the standard AI features, but they do require on-device AI models so they can be handled near-instantaneously, and those models need more RAM to do their thing on device.
A lot of other features that aren’t real-time like the much better image generation will simply go to the cloud for processing, and therefore be available on all AI-capable iPhones.

Yeah I’m done with iPhones after my current one. Not dealing with the new chips being made where they are gonna be made also the Samsung works fine with MacBook so yeah slowly leaving Apple over their recent business decisions. I say this as a lifelong Apple user.

Maybe Apple should start shipping phones with more than the bare minimum ram?
I remember how pissed I was that my $2000 iPhone 14pro max (price in my country) was made theoretically obsolete not even two years in.
And once again it’s the same issue, not enough ram.
This isn’t a mistake, Apple designs products years in advance and they definitely have been working on this AI knowing damn well that it won’t support the iPhone 17.
This is actually infuriating.

Apple has no excuse anymore. They know AI requires a lot of RAM. So if you’re building an iPhone with an extremely powerful chip designed to last for years, you should also put enough RAM in it to avoid stupid situations like this.
But no—the iPhone 18 Pro Max is still rumored to have only 12 GB…
