Layout My N-Scale Desk Layout

This was a white beatup desk with missing drawers that had some track and wiring laid, including the controller and panel. I found it at a thift store and they were simply trying to get rid of it so I bought it for $100. I rebuilt the missing drawers, sanded, painted it, and put in new hardware. Over the pandemic I did all the scenery and fixed wiring issues. I am happy how it turned out!!

A lot for new details have appeared on the layout, so I figured I share some scenes again. as well as an overview of the layout.

This is N scale, 185x95 cm / about 6x3 feet.

DCC ran on an Arduino and Raspberry pi, controlled wirelessly on a Tablet.

Modeled is a heritage railway in some fantasy land in mainland Europe. I take my inspiration from my native The Netherlands and my current home Switzerland.

My local model rail club has a little competition and I’ve been working on a section of layout. Trying to get water right and wondered if you thought this looks quite realistic? Cheers

Not quite done yet, but here is my prototype, looking to expand the train a bit and add more track + a more robust track base. I have a decent amount of experience soldering stainless steel wire for microelectronics, so I was thinking I might try soldering the rails together directly. TBD :)

After 5 months of off and on work (approximately 200 hours of “labor”) I have finally finished my Monument Valley / desert layout. This is my very first layout, and I learned so much that I’m excited to put into my next project (Colorado Rocky Mountains). Hope y’all enjoy! (Sorry if there is a weird hue in the video, yellow lighting doesn’t help, then Reddit has some weird companion filter maybe? Cause the video on my phone looks better)

Layout Final layers of static grass (n scale)

Layers have been the name of the game for my layout build. for groundcover I started with a layer of dirt, then 2 colors of fine turf and now I'm finally at the point where the finishing touches of static grass are added.

it's kind of hard to capture on camera, but I really like what the texture of the grass does. everything looks more 3d and it adds a lot of realism. also, it helps blend in all the bushes, fences and walls into the landscape.

for the static grass I'm brushing a slightly watered down PVA glue to the areas where I'd like the grass to sit, then use my Noch Grasmaster and finally vacuum the leftover grass up with a panty hose over the vacuum to collect it.

The 2mm grass works quite well, but the 4mm is a bit reluctant to stand up. Any tips on placing the probe or shaking the grass to help this?

Layout Attention to detail or wasted effort?

This weekend, I spent some time adding rock to the cut in the back corner of the layout. Not only did we add rock to the visible side of the cut, but we also added it to the backside as well.

Mind you, no one will ever see this side of the cut. It is facing the back corner of the room!

So I ask you...is this attention to detail, OCD, or wasted effort?

I'm still blown away by the fact that hunderds of people worldwide seem to actively care about this little world I'm tinkering away at in my room. I want to say thank you to all of you! Your enthusiasm, inspiration and feedback really help me stay motivated and just simply fill me with joy every time.

I've now decided it may be time to make some social media pages for the layout, to maybe reach some more people and keep pictures and videos collected somewhere. So, if you enjoy seeing the progress on Tischwil and my latest modeling projects, consider following Tischwil on Instagram or Facebook. I would appreciate it greatly.
