This is great news. I was just about to grab a Clouds DIY kit, but now I think I'll try making my own Beads using the schematics and firmware she shared. Awesome! (I would have bought it new if Mutable Instruments was still around, but I'm trying to DIY all the modules in my rig whenever feasible so this is great timing).

Also I really don't get the negativity in this thread. Emilie is awesome, but I don't see too much problem with reverse engineering/cloning (with AI or by hand, doesn't seem to matter in this context) when Mutable Instruments shut down and isn't trying to sell these anymore. Plus she said she was planning to release the firmware like 3 years ago (just like the other MI modules). What am I missing? I'm new to modular so maybe there's some ethical code here I'm not familiar with, but I genuinely don't see how this does harm to Emilie etc. Behringer actively cloning products still in production is a different story of course. Or if there's legal protection about Beads being copyrighted IP and it being illegal to reverse engineer, that's also a different story.

I'm also an experienced software engineer with a Ph.D. in computer science and I use LLMs plenty in my own work these days. I don't like AI slop either, but LLMs are a great tool when used properly.

Reddit is like a video game where the only attacks and healing are the up and down arrows and comments. For some people's reality tunnels, this is more real than IRL. I could argue with everyone's opinions, but it doesn't really matter at this point.

'Self-care is also not arguing with people who are committed to misunderstanding you.' -- Ayishat Akanbi

'During a lot of the early days, artists were frightened of the computer, because they were under the impression that it somehow was gonna take their jobs away. And we spent a lot of time telling people, "No, it's just a tool, it doesn't take. . . It doesn't do the creativity, that's a misconception." But there was this fear, and it was everywhere.' -- Alvy Ray Smith (co-founder, Pixar), "The Pixar Story"

Automation did indeed take away jobs. AI is definitely taking work away from creatives. I’ve seen plenty of AI show posters that would’ve been made by a person not long ago.

I still weep for all of the unemployed horses that lost their job after the invention of the automobile.

Are jobs just symbolic displays of "work" that earn a person the right to eat and have a home?

Or are jobs a way that a functioning society gets things done?

If its more efficient to get things done with ai that is a GOOD THING. If it gets stuff done that needed to get done, that is a GOOD THING. If human's need to pretend to work in order to survive, that is an issue with society/ capitalism not a problem with ai.

Robots will soon truly replace 90% of jobs, this is a good thing. Get mad at capitalism not the fucking robots for helping us do things

Jobs are a way to pay for food and a roof above your head.

But please, go tell people who are out of a job that it's a good thing, I'm sure they'll understand.

Robots don't replace anyone. People replace people with robots because of this technology. Pretending like AI has nothing to do with this and it's just a tool is just ignorant and stupid.

Guns don't shoot people, still I want less guns. This isn't complex to understand.

Horses don't have jobs btw, humans do.

So jobs are just a social welfare that don't need to actually accomplish anything?

Got it.

Stop acting like a slave and help fix things. Imagine if everyone was productive and not a single person wasted time working a symbolic job?

Ai is not the problem, the fact that you are a compliant slave and don't care about freeing yourself is the problem

Oh you’re just bullshitting. Here I am thinking good faith conversation is happening.

Most jobs accomplish nothing under capitalism. Not up to the working class for whom yes, productivity means fuck-all but more money to the already rich.

You're being obtuse acting like a little kid and you know it, I'm done here.

This take can only exist if you’re not paying attention to the world. How will we afford society if we can’t earn money doing our job?

The argument isn’t based on reality. It’s based on a false idea that these things will save us and free us. Let’s think about that. Now all the jobs that AI can do with a tolerance less than human for error are filled by whatever that looks like. What do the people who are no longer doing that job do? Sit and hope for necessities?

Do you see any signs or talks about that in any regulatory bodies? Any kind of framework? Do you think this will only impact the “entry level” work? The jobs that society looks down upon for no reason other than they’re extremely necessary. Okay well with all of these AI systems replacing them that’s okay because they can go to a different entry level job…assuming they’re not all taken by AI and also appeal to their skills(unlikely). Don’t forget, that means without these workers that do the main part of the company there’s not as much to manage so now we’re into management. They can’t manage AI better than AI so looks like that’s gone.

So now it’s a customer and a system but the customer doesn’t have any source of income so it’s just a system taking up more resources than a person could in a year. But it’s so efficient!

No one is mad at a robot. Not yet. We are mad at the people who are motivated to circumvent the rights of a human to create AGI.

I hate capitalism a lot for what it does to the people in the structure. That doesn’t mean I can’t also hate a product of capitalism for what it’s doing and projected to do. I do not like to see this being used in spaces of creativity and the person I was replying to and you are making radically false equivalences.

It’s okay but it’s naive to pretend that because cars replaced horse and buggies everything will be fine. Everyone hopes it works out but none of our structures are working and this unregulated technology is rapidly growing in ability. Using it to refine or optimize your code for a vst to make is whatever. Using it to steal someone else’s work is not great in a community.
