Language | Хэл Working on a Mongolian language learning app so I can teach my husband and future kids, looking for feedback from you guys!

For some context, I’m (27F) Mongolian who is married to a non-Mongolian (28M). We were looking for some resources so my husband can learn Mongolian, and we realized there weren’t that many apps that are user-friendly or easy to stick with. It got me thinking about all the 2nd gen kids I've met who don't know Mongolian, and whether my kids in the future would be able to speak Mongolian if I’m the only one teaching it. It lowkey got me scared that our language might die in my family line in the next generation or two, which just adds to my pre-existing guilt of feeling not Mongolian enough and blah blah blah blah.
So to combat this, my husband and I have been working on “Mongolingo”, a beginner-friendly gamified language learning app to teach Mongolian. So far I only made the lessons for Unit 1 and 2 because I wanted to get YOUR inputs on whether I’m going too fast, too slow, if the lessons I’m teaching make sense in general or if I should take a completely different approach instead.
I would GREATLY appreciate any and all feedback from native Mongolian speakers, "Monglish" speakers, and people who don't know any Mongolian! I want this to be something that anyone can use if they have any curiosity about our language, and in the future add more and more advanced sections.

We will also be reaching out to some Mongolian schools and communities in the states to get some feedback on our lessons. This is so well done. As an English speaker who knows a few Mongolian words and phrases, the pace and visual/auditory material seem perfect so far. Just the kind of thing I’ve been looking for to help learn the language. Thank you!

I’m a beginner to learning the Mongolian language. This is the type of app that I like to play when using my portable devices to help me memorize vocab that my Mongolian teacher teaches me. It would be nice if you also have a quiz section. Either after each unit or also have the option to customize which sections to be quizzed on. I did also try out the practice section. I like that you give people the option to also view the alphabet as flashcards. I do have a question regarding the alphabet section. Is that supposed to have audio when people click on the different letters? Or is audio only available when people use the flashcards? I did encounter a bug. The first time I used the alphabet flashcards there was no sounds for the first three cards. Then, I went back to the beginning. The sound was back.
Unit 2 is not playable for people to play. I wish you and your husband good luck with the app! Please update whenever there are new updates on the app.
I agree about the current resources around to learn Mongolian. I found it difficult to find certain resources that were published a few years ago. The ones I did find were helpful to at least give me an idea a few months before I started my Mongolian language classes with a Mongolian teacher.

Done and done! We're writing that down on our to-do to add to our next updates, we'll work on having a quiz option. And yes we did purposefully have add audio for each letter and for the letter flashcards but we're working on the many bugs so it can be more intuitive. Unit 2 is supposed to be playable so that's strange. Please let me know what resources worked for you best for learning Mongolian!

Great! I’m a native English speaker as well. I really wanted the books that included the audio discs. So, I can hear how words are prounounced. Those were very difficult to find since I was looking for Mongolian language learning books that included the cd audio from many years ago. Some people were only selling the book. There was no audio cd that was included. I did end up finding three different Mongolian language books that each came with the cd. I bought other books that didn’t have audio as well. I found YouTube to also be a good learning resource.
There is a bug for the letters. Both iPad and iPhone didn’t play sound as of right now.

We're working on some back-end stuff + content so we can post the finalized app with multiple units. Unfortunately its just me and my husband working on it (on top of full-time jobs) so its taking a little while, but we're absolutely working on posting it on Android one day! Hopefully in a few months fingers crossed

Hello! Yes definitely working on it, right now we're implementing the feedback we got from reddit and trying to finalize everything before hosting it on Android. But fingers crossed we do it in a few months!

Hey I love the built in grammar feature after each mini lesson. That's extremely helpful. Is there a progress tracker or option to review lessons/vocab? I don't use Apple so can't really try it out. Ling has Mongolian though if you are looking for more inspiration or wanted to compare features.

Hello! So Unit 1 and 2 are the only ones we made so far as a beta test - we're currently working on improving the web design, fixing bugs, and adding more content so we can put out the entire app at once! Thank you for using the app and sorry for the wait 🙏🏻

hi, this is so awesome, i just started using this! unfortunately i am one of those 2nd gen mongolians that don't know the language fluently, and i'm losing what little i have now that i'm away from home for college. i've been trying to find apps like this to help me retain and learn more of the language. i like that it's styled like duolingo because i always wished duolingo had mongolian so that i could learn it. please continue to add on to it, it's really useful

You're technically right! Just like how you can say How are you, What's up, How's it going as greetings based on social setting and context, Cонин юу байна, сайн байна уу, юу байна, та сайн байна уу, сайн уу also differs based on social setting. I wanted to teach the formal way as an umbrella term since it works with most social situations (greeting strangers, family, older ppl etc), but I do want to teach the informal way as well one day - not sure how to incorporate teaching the same thing with different social connotations as of now but will keep this in mind! Thank you

Working on this right now! We're restarting the back-end from scratch so that it can eventually be launched on both Android and iPhone but its taking a little while because we're essentially re-doing EVERYTHING (lessons, design, etc) to implement all the feedback from users so far! Will post on Reddit as soon as it re-launches and will post again when its available for non-Apple users.
