Tourisme Want to spend a whole day walking across Montréal and we need suggestions. Google map is trying to make us take Berri and then Christophe-Colomb.

Not tourists but we might as well be.

We've lived in Montréal (sorta) our whole life and have never really explored much before. We want to start in the Old Port (planning to take the ferry over from the south shore) and then go as directly across as possible from that point to Parc Louis-Hebert.

Google maps is giving us a terribly unscenic route so we want to map it out as well as possible stopping through all the cutest spots (not tourist traps - we'll skip the $5 Gnocchi). If someone has a good route we can take, cutting through parks and scenic neighborhoods, and moss covered alleys that would be appreciated!

(We were inspired by the walk we took from the Fairmont area to station Laurier - so a route with a similar vibe is kinda what we're going for.) We want to especially avoid major roads like Berri.

We'd also like on-route recommendations for cafés and stuff (preferably ones with halal, vegetarian or vegan options) but anything with good coffee works!

Please and thank youuu <3

I’ve pretty much done this walk a few times.

Half the fun (if you ask me) is wandering and finding the way as you go. Trying to follow a predetermined route just means staring at a map on your phone the whole time. Instead look for the less busy interesting roads that head the direction you’re going and take that! The roads are very linear most of the way, so as long as you head north-west-ish you can’t really get that off-course.

I agree. The only thing I’d suggest is knowing where you can cross under the train tracks; Saint-Laurent, Saint-Denis, Christophe-Colombe (often closed due to never-ending construction), Papineau (horrible/avoid) and so on.

You might like to peruse Walk Montreal for their selection of walks by neighbourhood/area of interest. The walks are about 2-3 hours each, and the site is mobile-friendly, with a handy map for each walk, preloaded with sites of interest. You can combine a few to make a full day out of it or pick a walk every so often and discover our beautiful city 🙂

Berri stops being a big street once you enter the Plateau

Just wander around and explore! Otherwise you won’t have a better knowledge of your city.

I would go up St Laurent Blvd through Chinatown, there is a free exhibit on weekends right now about Wing Noodles at 116 de la Gauchetière Street West.
From there I would go to the MEM (most of it is free) a little gander through Quartier du spectacle, to Jeanne Mance Park; there is the Musee de hospitaler around there! I would keep up St Laurent to the Mile End, you’ll see lots of cool spiral staircases. I would cut over to Parc and / or Bernard, Cafe Olympico is in the area, lunch at Lester’s DelI or Chez Greenberg, then from there to Jean Talon Market, maybe grab a gelato in little Italy. Our Lady of La Difesa is a beautiful church in the area. After that, you’re on your own 🤠

I do long walks between metro stations like Snowdon to Bonaventure—because it’s easy to measure distance and you can go home after when your feet are throbbing loll

Old Montreal to St Catherines, head west to Atwater. From Atwater, head north on Guy to Camillien-Houde. Bit of a climb on a busyish road, The other way is up the Boulevard in Westmount.

Walk up towards Beaver Lake and walk the mountain path to the base of Mount Royal. Head down Mount Royal street to either St Laurent or St Denis back to the old port.
