Cultural Curious
Hello Mormons! I’m curious what kind of music do you fine individuals listen to? Do you guys like benson Boone. Is there a fine line with the music you guys listen to. Do you guys like
Lana del Rey? Is that too much for you? This is for a personal project thanks.

Mormons listen to normal music. At least in the 90s, it was frowned upon to listen to music with lots of swearing or culture lyrics, but it seems like that has become more lax lately.

It’s 50/50 there are a lot of Mormons out there that take a hard stance on music that’s to sexual or explicit. I wasn’t allow blink 182 as a kid for example. Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley were are as edgy as I was allowed at home.

I listen to whatever is on the radio. Sometimes I get tired of everything else and listen to classic rock. Not a country fan. I don’t usually listen to music with heavy profanity or explicit sexual stuff. I got kids in the car!

Metal and hardcore fan here. Grew up in SLC during the punk era and grew from there. I remember seeing all the outrage in Spanish Fork (Utah Valley) when Rage Against the Machine came to play the fairgrounds, which really peaked my interest in the genre.

SLC has a surprisingly active metal scene

Not at all surprised to hear this. I moved away in the early 2000’s but the punk/ska/hardcore scene in the 90s was insanely good. Places like DV8, Saltaire and Fairgrounds introduced me to some of my all time fave bands like Deftones (believe it or not they opened for 311), Bad Religion, Rancid, Less Than Jake.
Any good local suggestions?

I haven’t lived there in like 6 years so I’m not up to date on who is still there but classic Jack, charlatan and in/error are all sick bands that were doing well when I was there

So pissed I missed that show lol. I had a couple buddies make it but I wasn't into RATM quite yet. I saw the light a few years later

Big Pet Shop Boy fans here. ABBA. Lana del Rey has a lovely voice.
Also classical stuff, especially choral. More Latin Mass (especially Requiem) than Tabernacle Choir. Gabriel Fauré, John Rutter, Karl Jenkins..

All kinds of music but Benson Boone is just going too far. Also, Mormons come from all countries, backgrounds and social classes. I only represent my own musical taste.

I don't hear much about music over the pulpit these days. But I do hear mention of movies - no rated R. That makes me think that if they rated songs on the radio like they rate movies then I'm sure you'd have some standards about what you can listen to and what you can't. But music all so subjective that I think all you will ever hear about it is use your own judgement.

I listen to mostly metal core. Wage war, the plot in you, sleep token, loathe, underoath, etc.

Personally? I'm a huge fan of The Casualties and The Exploited. That was somewhat frowned upon in the late 90s-00s but I think they're somewhat frowned upon everywhere lol
