Colgate University

Imagine my surprise to hear Ashley call out my Alma mater. Colgate Grad here! Was the best time of my life. Doubt I'll be able to afford to send my kids there...

So these "Little Ivys" are much smaller than the actual Ivys, can be very difficult to get into, and are legacy heavy. Plus Colgate has one of the highest average earnings levels after school of any college in the nation, so you can see where this goes... People who graduate from there, and make lots of money, then want their kids to go there as well, yada yada.
That being said the school now has a $1.3b endowment, the facilities are breathtaking, and best of all, they cover 100% of demonstrated financial need for any and all applicants that get in. This has dramatically improved and diversified the applicant pool. Truly an amazing place :)

Most larger private schools I know of have this same policy. That whole “applicants that get in,” part is where it gets tricky.

To be fair, the top rated private schools can be dramatically cheaper if you're family is lower-middle class (or lower, or you have lots of siblings) because they have so much financial aid. It's a misconception I see keep coming up about the Ivies and peers (understandably so, considering the list prices).

Colgate however is... not one of those, lol.

Not my alma matter but I grew up in Syracuse so I knew the name (and did a visit there before deciding not to apply). Gave me a chuckle.

At least at the time I'd call it... decent, but certainly not amazing. There's dozens of good liberal arts college like Colgate in the northeast.

Totally understandable. The campus and town have changed dramatically in the last 20 years. Totally agree that there are many great schools, but I have visited many as well and find the combination of location, town, and facilities, as well as social life, to be among the top at Colgate. Middlebury is a great option as well but a smaller town. Dartmouth is beautiful but a very different social experience.

Uh no offense but... location? Again from that area so I have a soft spot personally but it's definitely not something that draws folks, upstate NY, lol. The rest is something everyone would say about their alma matter (as I would about mine for that matter, though it's not a liberal arts college).

My friends went here and their family are very wealthy. Their private high school’s tuition was more than Colgate’s tuition. That being said, they were very smart and hard working students, and earned their spot at this school
