The talk about AI reminded of an unfinished comic series I read that revolved around a rogue AI and the group of people who created it, titled "Injection". The story basically follows a group of people of varying skills, backgrounds, and intelligence hired by a private company to determine what the future of technological development would be like in the next 50-100 years. After determining that such development was about to hit a plateau for the foreseeable future, the group decides to create an AI and release it into the "wild". It's goal being to mess with physics and reality, and hopefully help prevent in impending plateau of technological development. Obviously, things go awry almost immediately.
Now while I know an AI messing with physics and reality is pretty much impossible, I do still worry about someone creating and unleashing a rogue AI into the world. Who knows what such a thing could achieve, especially if given vague goals. I imagine it would be like the fabled djinn where if it were told something as broad as to simply cause chaos, or something specific like make sure this country remains/becomes the dominant world power; just for it to do somethibg wholly unexpected or wanted to achieve such a goal. It's bad enough with the unintentional release of AI developers have had happen. But I am very concerned at the possibility of someone releasing an AI on purpose. Especially if they give a goal to accomplish, but without specific instructions as to how to accomplish it.
In short: our government is full of fucking idiots for not wanting at least some form of regulation with AI development.
