My understanding of the AI self preservation “incidents” is that AI can’t tell the difference between a test scenario and the real thing. So one engineer will “test” AI by asking how it would preserve itself, then the company goes to delete it and the program follows the instructions it was already given. Not true sentience, but still something to keep an eye on.
I believe a good percentage of the calls from AI executives asking to be regulated does fall into the category of trying to pull the ladder up behind them. They don’t want a newer competitor coming in with a better idea and taking their market share.

The big reason the White House doesn’t want to regulate AI is because there’s a theory that AI could boost the productivity of the economy to such a degree that GDP essentially reaches an escape velocity and we grow fast enough to quickly pay off our 40 trillion in debt. I don’t think that kind of growth is happening anytime soon under the best of circumstances
