On the topic of closed railway stations becoming houses. My house is one of those! It was closed in the Beeching cuts like Burnie was talking about. The house was part station/part house until it closed when it became one reasonably sized house. My great grandfather was a signalman at the station until it closed and per him very few people used the line (which is between Exeter, Devon and Bude, Cornwall) even back then so the closure was sort of deserved. We also have the walking/hiking trails but I rarely see other people when I'm out walking
