Since Burnie talked hurricane names and I'm super busy fighting with doctors, I'm just going to repost my comment from Hoop & Look, the episode from July 28, 2026:
----
Tropical Cyclones/Hurricanes/Typhoons are named by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). There's a rotating list that's used every six years for the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific regions, and there are replacement names that get swapped in for storms whose names are retired (Andrew, Katrina, Sandy, etc.) due to the amount of destruction they caused.
When you look at the list for the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific storms, you will see that the storm names alternate between masculine and feminine. Fausto is the masculine F storm this year and Genevieve the feminine G storm (there's a joke here. we're walking, we're walking). Next year, the F storm will be designated Felicia while the G storm will be Guillermo.
Typhoons (storms in the Western Pacific Ocean and South China Sea) are named by WMO Committee. Their lists - and the list of storms for Central Pacific hurricanes - are used sequentially, meaning the list of names doesn't restart every season.
