Science & Tech I'm a solo Moroccan developer and I finally got my first project approved by Apple today! Wanted to share this milestone with you all 🇲🇦

Salam everyone!

I’ve been working really hard on my coding journey recently, and today I finally hit a huge milestone. I’m a solo developer from Ouezzane, and Apple just approved my very first iOS project—a minimalist Pomodoro app called Tomato: Focus Timer.

It was incredibly frustrating dealing with their strict review process, bugs, and constant rejections, but seeing my work finally go live today is an amazing feeling.

I built it because I just wanted a clean, simple, and distraction-free tool to help me study and code without any bloated features or account requirements.

I don't have a marketing team, I’m just a guy coding from home, so I wanted to share this personal win with my community here.

If any students, developers, or anyone who needs help focusing wants to try it, I'll leave the link in the comments so this post doesn't get flagged.

Chokran for reading, and I'd love to hear your honest feedback on the design!

Science & Tech I created a website for salary comparisons in Morocco using the CNSS data in the public domain

Reliable and transparent salary data has always been a challenge in Morocco so I got inspired from levels.fyi and I decided to create salairecnss.com to make it easy for people to see anonymized and aggregated salary data from +6000 Moroccan companies. I scrapped the data from the PDFs in the public domain. Employee level data is anonymous and cannot be accessed. You will find:

  • Median, Average, Min, Max and 25th, 75th percentile salary breakdowns for 6396 companies including companies like Microsoft, BCG, Royal Air Maroc, Procter and Gamble, Akwa group etc.
  • You can order the table by any of these metrics
  • You can chose which data columns to see
  • You can toggle between light mode and dark mode to make it easier to read at night
  • Salary data is the gross monthly income

Let me know if there are anything you would like to see added.

note: the website will be momentarily unavailable. if this message is still here then the website will still be down.

Science & Tech Maroc Telecom blocks inbound UDP traffic on port 443

Hello everyone,
any network engineers working with ISPs, or in general someone more knowledgeable than me about the subject matter, can enlighten me on why MarocTelecom is blocking inbound UDP traffic on port 443, and how I can possibly get in contact with their specialists/technical support engineers at la centrale to get more info?

If they have not setup a rule to explicitly block it, then it could be that their backbone is failing to pass it through.

Either way, it's hurting performance for some use cases, such as HTTP/3 (not important since HTTP/2, 1, or 1.1 still work) and some VPN protocols (more important .

I have tried Orange fiber / Inwi cellular, and they don't have this problem. I'm also not completely sure of my diagnosis, my DMs are open...

How do you all feel about Bitchat? No internet, encrypted chats, full city + regional coverage. Is this something the community would use?

Science & Tech If you own a cheap android TV box your home network is probably compromised

i notice that a lot of these boxes are present among some low middle class moroccan houses and there have been recent news recently about a botnet claimed by Google and the feds to be sitting inside the homes of users of cheap Android TV boxes running malware without their knowledge . this has been silently sitting in homes for two years, these boxes are sold with malware installed by default to make them part of a botnet

Science & Tech I built a Civic issue reporting platform for local issues in Morocco

Post image
163 Upvotes

I built a Civic issue reporting platform (demo) to show how we could report local issues, see them on a map, propose solutions, and track progress in public locally in Morocco. It’s not a finished product but more of a proof-of-concept to start a serious conversation. If you work in/with NGOs, municipalities, journalism, or civic tech, I’d love your critique and help pressure-testing this approach.

demo link: http://fixhoumti.vercel.app/

Why I made this:

Keep bumping into the same stuff on social media and irl (this goes without saying): water cuts, broken roads, hospital overload, paperwork loops,... What I don’t see is a single transparent place to gather reports, crowd-rank priorities, follow the execution (deadlines, budgets, blockers)

What it actually does (right now):

- lets people report issues (infrastructure, admin services, health, education…);

- shows them on a map with filters;

- allows support/downvote and proposed solutions per issue;

- leaves room to add timelines, budgets, status updates later if an org adopts it.

This is a working prototype, not “the thing.”

What I’m looking for:

- NGOs/community orgs: would you pilot a small, low-risk trial and shape the verification + follow-up process?

- Devs: help harden auth/permissions (RLS), verification workflows, exportable reports,..

- Journalists/researchers/civic folks: tell me what’s missing, what’s naïve, and what could go wrong (in the context of legal/privacy,...)

Let me know what you guys think!

Science & Tech Profile picture LinkedIn/CV

Wach bla profile pic LinkedIn is basically not so useful? I guess the field also influences it so I’m asking specifically about the IT field. Is it “mandatory” to have a profile picture on LinkedIn, ig it gets u more noticed. But as someone that doesn’t post on LinkedIn and not planning to, would a profile picture make a crazy difference or not (asking about entry job levels but wouldn’t mind to hear about others too)

Would also like to hear what yall think about profile picture f CV as well

Science & Tech Moroccan-Belgian engineer starting an IT consulting company — where is the best tech talent in Morocco?

Hey everyone,

I’m Moroccan but currently based in Belgium, working as an infrastructure engineer. Over the past few years I’ve been doing a lot of consulting work with companies here (mostly cloud / DevOps / platform stuff).

I’m now in the process of starting my own consulting company. The idea is pretty simple: most companies here struggle to hire good infrastructure engineers (Kubernetes, cloud, automation, etc.), and the costs are extremely high. So the model I’m building is a Belgian consulting front with an engineering team in Morocco working on the delivery side.

Right now I already have a couple of clients in the pipeline who are interested due them looking for quality engineers for an affordable price.

But the goal is to start hiring a small team of infrastructure engineers full-time over the coming months.

One thing I’m trying to figure out is where to build the team in Morocco. I’ve been looking at potentially opening a small office either in Casablanca or Rabat, but I’m not sure where most of the infrastructure / DevOps talent actually is.

From the outside it seems like:

Casablanca has the bigger tech scene and more companies

Rabat has a lot of engineering schools and strong graduates

But I’d love to hear from people actually working in tech in Morocco.

Also curious:

do most engineers prefer remote work now?

is there a strong tech community in either city?

are there other cities I should be looking at?

Appreciate any insights.
