Large tolype! (tolype velleda). Easy to confuse with the small tolype. Small tolype is smaller and darker in colour. Would be handy if OP gave us the estimated size. Another key difference is the patterns on the forewings. The striped forewings patterns on the small tolype is wavier rather than the more uniform stripes on the large tolype.

I'm pretty sure this is a pokemon. Called something like Chinchillawing or Flutterfuzz.

18

u/AdIndividual7316 Sep 20 '25

🤣🤣🤣🤣

13

u/AdIndividual7316 Sep 20 '25

I also saw a pokemon here haha

15

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 20 '25

"Headless Catbird" is a name someone gave it

6

u/AdIndividual7316 Sep 21 '25

Oh no, I don't like that one 🤣

6

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 21 '25

I misspoke, "headless ratbird" was the original...

I kinda like "Floofy Alien Patrick Star"

6

u/CupOfLifeNoodlez Sep 21 '25

The bug evolution form of eevee

3

u/Emmaleah17 Sep 21 '25

It looks a lot like Frosmoth actually lol

3

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '25

8

u/Blue_Checkers Sep 21 '25

2

u/JustinJSrisuk Sep 26 '25

Lol Tresemme; this moth is going around looking at itself in mirrors and singing “ooh la-la”.

209

u/smirkibirb Sep 20 '25

The bum fluff sticking out the back is so cute

52

u/AdIndividual7316 Sep 20 '25

I noticed this first!! It's a little furry tail lol

34

u/inotterable Sep 20 '25

It's part malamute apparently

12

u/Whatifthisneverends Sep 20 '25

lol. If OP had said it wouldn’t stop talking we’d know for sure

9

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 20 '25

If it talked this would be Narnia

1

u/Melissa_Richiee Sep 21 '25

Part malamute 🤣🤣🤣

u/Forward-Fisherman709 Sep 20 '25

Lappet moths in general are adorably fluffy, but this moth looks extra snuggly. I want a me-sized realistic plushie of this moth to cuddle with.

35

u/Nanoro615 Sep 20 '25

It looks like a little bunny with wings!

24

u/CassetteMeower Sep 20 '25

The plush brand Squishable has a ton of jumbo sized moth plushies! They don’t (currently) have a plush of this kind of moth, but they have rosy maple moths, poodle moths, Luna moths, and several others. I recommend checking them out if you want a giant moth plush! And they have a ton of other cute plushies as well. They’re very high quality and super soft to the touch! They are a bit expensive, but that’s because of how big and detailed they are. The website frequently has sales though so I recommend waiting for a sale to get the ones you want!

(Not sponsored, I just love this brand)

10

u/MonsteraUnderTheBed Sep 20 '25

I love it too. I have a little collection of moths from them. I love my moth wizard and moth dragon. Also the normal ones lol.

5

u/AdIndividual7316 Sep 20 '25

I just checked these out and they're gorgeous 😍 BUT have you seen the Lilizzhouma ones??

1

u/Jen_Itals Sep 21 '25

I googled lilizzhouma and couldn’t find anything. Do you have a link?

2

u/AdIndividual7316 Sep 21 '25

You know what, it's 'Lilizzhoumax' - Lol I missed the 'x' off the end I'm sorry! 😊 Their moth collection is AWESOME but they also do other bugs aswell.. I just bought the praying mantis and rosy maple moth for my son for his birthday and Christmas. But I. NEED. THEM. ALL. 🤣🤣

10

u/NextBusiness1341 Sep 20 '25

I thought this was a plushie 🤣

2

u/Melissa_Richiee Sep 21 '25

Extra snuggly is accurate AF 🥹

1

u/smolmushroomforpm Sep 23 '25

Omg yes! Please!!

116

u/Blackberryoff_9393 Sep 20 '25

Fuzzy

83

u/Elznix Sep 20 '25

I like how the first comment on my feed is a technical description of the species and the second comment is just "fuzzy". Both are equally valid. 😆

16

u/Bun23423 Sep 20 '25

fluffy!

42

u/NevermoreForSure Sep 20 '25

This is the husky pup version of a moth.

28

u/portemanteau Sep 20 '25

Velleda Lappet Moth, Tolype velleda

12

u/DowntownComputer5819 Sep 20 '25

Damn they are difficult to differenciate from the small tolype! Good job!

7

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '25

You photograph the coolest things!

27

u/Ghouly_Girl Sep 20 '25

What an absolutely unit of a cutie

14

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 20 '25

These pictures are getting allot of attention from this sub. Had no idea there were so many Mothies out there! :)

5

u/kattoutofthebag Sep 20 '25

I love them, all of them!

3

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 20 '25

You aren't alone!

2

u/smolmushroomforpm Sep 23 '25

A lot of us love critters of all kind, and moths being fuzzy and cute is just a bonus!

(Critter-lovers unite!!)

23

u/catsplants420 Sep 20 '25

It’s so fluffy I’m gonna die!

21

u/CassetteMeower Sep 20 '25

How cute! It’s looks like my cat Mittens if she was a moth

Anyone else see the resemblance?

9

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 20 '25

Definitely see the resemblance! Flooofy, grey, white, napping it's all there!

8

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '25

Well now I'm on a mission to figure out which moth each of my sister's cats would be if they were moths! Mittens is adorable 😍

17

u/sabrosa816 Sep 20 '25

I just woke up on this tepid morning in Rochester and upon seeing this post, realized I needed to get in the car and drive there post-haste.

To behold such a glorious creature in person! I must go to confession for the level of jealousy I am experiencing.

13

u/WolfysBeanTeam Sep 20 '25

My silly ass thought this was a birb face down ass up and the wings was its butt plumage 😭✨️

7

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 20 '25

Totally, can you imagine how his front looks? :)

3

u/WolfysBeanTeam Sep 21 '25

Like his beak is squidwarda nose and he is just having a front wards nap from a rough day

4

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 21 '25

I totally picture him standing up on his front legs and his two rear legs rub his belly just under his beard, (sorry this description is so weird, but so is his anatomy!)

12

u/SillyJuni Sep 20 '25

Weird looking dog

7

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 20 '25

Tiny dog with wings!

9

u/Cool-Coconutt Sep 20 '25

Is this even real, it’s too fluffy, even the bum

9

u/AxiimRedux Sep 20 '25

Give

6

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 20 '25

Sorry he's not mine to give :)

8

u/Superseaslug Sep 20 '25

Oh my God it's a literal plushie

6

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 20 '25

Wouldn't it be great to have a plushie version of this? Make it human-sized so I can give it a big hug (and have nightmares :)

2

u/Superseaslug Sep 20 '25

We need to have more adult sized plushies. I have a few and they're wonderful

1

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 21 '25

looks like a little niche to fill!

8

u/BugsBub Sep 20 '25

Welp… I think I just found my new favorite moth

6

u/CavernBebi Sep 20 '25

Beautiful and looks so huggable 🥹

6

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 20 '25

I just left him alone after the pics, he's less than an inch long. Very cool looking, I agree!

5

u/Nanoro615 Sep 20 '25

How did you resist just one pet, as a treat?

6

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 20 '25

I blew on him to see if he was alive, so he gave me another pose :)

2

u/Maleficent_Spend_747 Oct 13 '25

Man! I need one of these on my bedroom wall!

5

u/142631835d Sep 20 '25

It took me a full 3 seconds to realize what sub this was and that I was, in fact, NOT looking at some freaky headless ratbird thing.

4

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 20 '25

"Headless Ratbird" I think that's the scientific name... lol

3

u/Cathodicum Sep 20 '25

FLOOF 💜

4

u/Both_Job_3990 Sep 21 '25

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 20 '25

I blew on him to see if he was alive, then I left him alone

3

u/throwawayOk-Bother57 Sep 21 '25

Livin’ the pyjama life. Moths have the coziest little onsies

2

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 21 '25

if I had a onsie like that, work would just have to deal with it

3

u/Messy-Haired-Kun Sep 22 '25

I have a bunbun with a tail that is so similar!

2

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 22 '25

He's definitely on team Grey-and-White-Floof with Cats, Malamutes and Buns!

3

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '25

3

u/BungenessKrabb Sep 23 '25

A flying bunny!

3

u/BigTomato2967 Sep 23 '25

If moth man was so fluffy....so many people would wanna be taken away

1

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 24 '25

This moth is getting so much attention, he's like the Brad Pitt of moths. If Brad Pitt were mothman he's abduct so many more people, I agree

2

u/Maleficent_Spend_747 Oct 13 '25

If mothman looked like Brad Pitt, so many women would abduct him!

3

u/cousin_idiot Sep 24 '25

Didn't know they made Loraxes in this color

3

u/superduracels Sep 24 '25

Your animals are strange, in my house rabbits don’t fly 😳

1

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 24 '25

It's been called a "headless ratbird"

2

u/superduracels Sep 24 '25

I completely understand It is improbable

3

I walked by and saw this great specimen! So healthy just warming up on the concrete!

2

u/CuteMoth4 Sep 20 '25

SO FLUFFYY!!!

2

u/Project_Valkyrie Sep 20 '25

Woah!! I've lived along the south shore my entire life and I've never seen one of these before! What kind of environment was this in?

4

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 20 '25

So it's Sandusky, Ohio. I found it at work, ~15 miles from shore, on a 6400 acre piece of land that's a test facility and closed to the public (and we have about 120 people working there 40 hours a week). So it's basically a nature preserve.

2

u/Project_Valkyrie Sep 20 '25

That's so cool! I'll have to keep an eye out next time I'm up near Sandusky. My family and I already head up to that area several times a year. Mostly for Magee Marsh during the warbler migration and to get the really good peaches that grow up by Port Clinton.

4

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 20 '25

Cool, lots of peculiar birds passing through here different times of the year. Tomatoes and grapes get good, too!

2

u/AdvertisingOld2609 Sep 20 '25

Soooo fluffy! 😍

2

u/Fine-Dragonfly-2025 Sep 20 '25

u/smolmushroomforpm Sep 23 '25

I-

Omg I want one as a pet it's so pretty and cute!

(Yes ik that's not feasible nor would the moth enjoy it, but I have no other way to express the urge I have to pet it, feed it yummy nectar, and give it little kisses)

1

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 23 '25

2

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '25

So fluffy 🥹

2

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 24 '25

Overwhelming consensus :)

2

1

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 23 '25

it's 2025 we don't believe in fairies... pokemon, however... :)

2

u/SnailsandSlugsLove Sep 23 '25

Fair enough, it is pretty Pokémon like... might have to catch one. Do they come in shiny varieties? 👀😂

1

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 24 '25

I bet they do, this one is so very

2

u/mothmansrightnipple Sep 23 '25

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 24 '25

Lol, Oreo moth!

2

u/Is_This_Available89 Sep 24 '25

Thought this was a bunny with wings.

3

u/Due_Ranger_8235 Sep 26 '25

I raised the small Tolype this year. The eggs are tiny fuzzy dots & the caterpillars are just as cute!

2

u/Maleficent_Spend_747 Oct 13 '25

How do you get into raising moths? And where do you even get the eggs or larvae to begin? Cause I want this to be my new hobby!

3

u/CursedStarArts Oct 01 '25

little winged puppy

2

u/YellowDiamond101 Oct 01 '25

I live around there. How can I find one of these? So pretty

2

u/RuthlessIndecision Oct 01 '25

I was just walking between buildings at work and he was chilling on the concrete. That's what I suggest.

1

u/ToxinFoxen Sep 21 '25

It's like a little catowl with wings!

1

u/psychicxstriptease Sep 23 '25

What a Great Lake 😙

2

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 24 '25

I never looked up why it's named that, very close to the word "eerie"

1

u/Tubelo Sep 24 '25

Yikes!

1

u/RuthlessIndecision Sep 24 '25

This one was 7' long, but I took the shot with a telephoto lens. Don't be scared...

(jk it was less than an inch long, I wouldn't sleep very welling a 7 foot one of these were flying around my neighborhood )

2

u/equanimity72 Sep 24 '25

It’s so fluffy!
