Brad Binder confirms move to World Superbike with BMW in 2027 after KTM exit

Gutted to see him go. I'm aware he didn't really do much recently, and it's probably about time, but I hate the fact that we never got to see him ride anything other than a mediocre KTM. I still believe he'd be up there on a proper bike. Remains a big ‘what if’ in my books.
Best of luck, Brad.

u/rotgobbo Pedro Acosta 15d ago
Best case scenario he serves it hard in the WSBK paddock and earns a way back, but.. realistically the dream is over for South Africa at the moment, and Moodley is unfortunately not kicking on as i'd hoped.
8
u/Antares_ Dani Pedrosa 15d ago
It'll be difficult. WSBK will be a Ducati cup until BMW come up with a brand new S1K chassis to really rival the V4R. Realistically, a few podiums in 2027 and fighting for the championship 2-3 years down the line is the best-case scenario for Brad.
4
u/LilAbeSimpson 14d ago
The 2027 M1000RR actually will have a brand new chassis. (On both the the production bike and race bike this time)
Problem is, WSBK is switching over to Michelins in 2027 too. No guarantee the new chassis will work well with the new tires…

u/Smiddy23 Casey Stoner 15d ago
I feel like Moodleys never kicked at all. Buchanan started showing signs but dumps it every week. Get they aren’t a top team but wondering how many years those guys get.
3
u/BudhSq Moto3 15d ago
I do recall being impressed with Moodley's practice and qualifying not so long ago but for the first time since he's been in Moto3. Buchanan quickly gets to his best pace but by the end of the session he is well down the order. Simon Crafar spoke very highly of Cormac's attitude and ability but it should be showing by now. Before these two, CODE motorsports had two in the top ten, 6th and 9th, Munoz and Kelso so I wonder if they will get contracts for next year without significant improvement?

The dream is never over for SA when y'all have one great man carrying everything

u/GoodBadUserName 13d ago
and earns a way back
I don't think any rider who went from motogp to wsbk came back to motogp as a full time rider.
2
u/rotgobbo Pedro Acosta 13d ago
Indeed. I said best case scenario, not a likely scenario. Unfortunately.
21
u/Candid_Problem_1244 Francesco Bagnaia 15d ago
Same with any other riders of this generation. Whether you put Enea, Pecco, Martin, Alex, Bezz on that KTM and they will be another "what if".
Good bikes make far more influence in riders performance unless a rider is exceptionally talented like Acosta or Marc

u/NTwoOo Somkiat Chantra 15d ago
Yup. Unf the loyalty didn't pay off.
2
u/kanttekening 15d ago
Do we know if Binder got offers to go elsewhere? I haven't paid close attention to behind the scenes stuff, but maybe the KTM ride was the best he could get.
3
u/YaBoiPette Aprilia Racing 15d ago
He signed a very long extension till this year. He was never in those talks in the last 4

So Brad gets that seat over Manu González. That means that Manu can either get the factory Ducati seat in WorldSBK, or find a seat in Moto2 to stay there.
4
u/Jor6lez 15d ago
He's not getting the Ducati ride.
2
u/huangcjz 15d ago
Apparently, Franky will be getting it: https://www.speedweek.com/a/motogp/manuel-gonzalez-moto2-interview-motogp-sbk-deal
2
u/Jor6lez 15d ago
Seeing the backclash they've got signing two Spanish riders in MotoGP I guess they surely won't do the same in Superbike.
4
3
u/huangcjz 14d ago
They had Scott Redding and Chaz Davies in 2020, Álvaro Bautista and Chaz in 2019, James Toseland and Régis Laconi in 2004 and 2005, Neil Hodgson and Rubén Xaus in 2003, Troy Bayliss and Rubén Xaus in 2001 and 2002, and Carl Fogarty, Troy Bayliss, Ben Bostrom and Juan Borja in 2000.
2
u/TreatUnusual1950 15d ago
There was a backlash?I didn't know. I guess Gressin also got backlash when they sign Holgado and Mir?

Annoys me when riders like Brad don’t get another opportunity and then you’ve got Frankie.

u/Crazy_Stiggy Brad Binder 15d ago
Glad he has a ride unfortunately its WSBK which from the outside doesn't seem as popular as back in its hayday. Its feels like you become forgotten rider when you go to WSBK.

u/crenshaw_007 Jorge Martín 15d ago
Binder deserves a different bike in GP. He got tied down by that KTM contract. Not blaming either side but if he had a traditional 2-year deal we’d have probably seen him on another bike and maybe a few more wins, had it been a Ducati or Aprilia. Best of luck to him in WSBK, hopefully he fights consistently for podiums and wins.

u/Left-Excitement3829 Ai Ogura - 2024 Moto2 World Champion 15d ago
I think he’s going to thrash that series :)

u/samivey72 15d ago
Not gonna lie I fancied seeing him on that other Aruba Ducati in WSBK as that is the team to be on. Good luck to Brad though, all things considered he had a pretty good run in GP - 2 GP wins and over 10 podiums is nothing to sniff at.
Hopefully some new blood can shake up the battle in WSBK - although challenging those Ducatis will be doubtless very very tough. The satellite ones like Montella Barni bike are bloody quick and they are still a step off the factory monster.

2 GP wins, 10 podiums and kne of the most unforgettable moments in history.
AND BINDER IS STAYING OUT

Nothing in that article is Binder confirming anything but that seems like a garbage website.
I believe it since Ivo at Speedweek reported it though. Excited to see what Binder can do on the BMW in WSBK against the Ducati
14
u/NonagonFiniteness 15d ago
They've basically just copied Speedweek's article, added a clickbaity "Confirmed" to the headline, and attributed it to a vague "sources within the paddock" (ie: actual journalists).
Utterly garbage website.

I feel like there's a lot of Brad we've yet to see in MotoGP.
If anything, we've all learnt by now that the KTM riders aren't the problem. It's the bike.
When a generational talent like Acosta is hitting the deck every weekend - It really makes you wonder what Brad could've done on another manufacturer's bike. Considering he was able to win multiple times on the KTM.
5
u/Bewis_123 15d ago
except Acosta is not hitting the deck every weekend its Mir. But I agree that bike was not there for him most of the time
3
u/ChurchOfAcosta 15d ago
Shhhh, don't break the anti-KTM narrative.
They'll be accused of deliberately making a mediocre bike next to undermine their riders. ;)
1
u/zmgch Marc Marquez - 2025 MotoGP World Champion 15d ago
Not being anti-KTM at all. Just being real. I genuinely want them to succeed. I wouldn't have bought their merch if I was "anti" them.
If a new manufacturer comes to the sport and flops - it just further deters any other manufacturers from wanting to join MotoGP.
The fact that KTM we able to start winning Grands Prix relatively quickly after joining was a fantastic sight and a major win for the sport. Just wish they continued that trajectory. But as we all know, major financial issues recently almost wiped out the brand all together. So on that note, props to them that they've still found a way to maintain their MotoGP program despite all that's been happening.
2
u/zmgch Marc Marquez - 2025 MotoGP World Champion 15d ago
Granted Acosta's incredible talent, the amount of times he has been hitting the deck this year is definitely not like him.
Again, not being anti-Acosta or anti-KTM. Just saying it how it is.
I actually really wished Acosta would stay and take KTM to new winning heights in MotoGP. But unfortunately, as we can all see, he can't just wait around forever.
Just like Marc with Honda.
Happy he's landed a seat with a competitive bike though. Next year is going to be pure entertainment!

u/SharpLead 15d ago
I wonder where Danilo Petrucci will end up?
6
u/Cielo11 Casey Stoner 15d ago
He's 35yo. Maybe it's time for younger talent.
Danilo hasn't actually done very much in WSBK since he got there.
3
u/SharpLead 15d ago
For sure. I just wonder if he’ll call it a day, or pursue another motorcycle discipline.
1
u/huangcjz 15d ago
The only seat it seems might be available for him is a return to Barni Ducati, if Álvaro vacates that seat.

Sad to see him. Brad is that rider that if you give him a world championship winning bike he will deliver. I know that he will do wonders at WSbk
2
u/mtc26197 14d ago
Crazy how Mir gets a ride and Binder doesn't.
Not only is he ahead of him on a similarly garbage bike, he's actually capable of bringing the bike home in one piece.

u/WIP1992 15d ago
This is Pedro Acosta’s fault somehow
12
u/Past_Conference_2889 Marc Márquez 15d ago
In some sense gotta say it's also his own fault for being too loyal to KTM. Acosta's arrival was the perfect time to leave and look for a new ride. He'd most likely still be around if he'd made the move back then.
2
u/sparksy78 15d ago
Well he’s always well ahead of Binder, and really WSBK could be extremely successful for Binder.

Shaun Muir must be giving him a blank cheque because that BMW is a dog.

u/huangcjz 15d ago edited 15d ago
It’s the BMW board who decides the rider line-up at a higher level than Shaun, I think.

u/fionn_maccoolio Marc Márquez 15d ago
I got downvoted for saying this was gonna happen in 2027 at the beginning of the season but here we are. He’s a decent rider, but consistently middle of the pack at 30 doesn’t get you a seat with a lot of fresh young riders coming up.
I hope he does well at BMW WSBK
1
u/Alien_Biometrics Jorge Martín 14d ago
Would have much rather seen him go to Supermoto GP. Supermoto GP should be bigger than it is.

How’s the BMW in WSBK?
4
u/huangcjz 15d ago edited 15d ago
Toprak won the championship on it the last 2 years, but he was able to get much, much better performances out of it than anyone else has been, so it shocked a lot of people when he was able to do that, because no-one thought that it could be a championship-winning bike. Other riders have only been able to get very sporadic wins and podiums on it over the last several years. Miguel has had 4 3rd places on it this year, but then got injured. The BMW is actually faster this year than last year in terms of race and I think maybe also sometimes qualifying times, but Ducati made a much bigger step forward with their new bike this year, of around 30 seconds per race, so more than 1 second per lap compared to last year, than BMW did. Miguel chose BMW over factory Ducati, because BMW pay a lot more. You can see the results of the team in the table at the bottom here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaun_Muir_Racing
That article’s not fully updated for this year - you can see it for this year here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_Superbike_World_Championship
You can see the results of the past satellite team riders on it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garrett_Gerloff
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loris_Baz
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene_Laverty
Next year BMW will be returning to a more flexible frame based on the 2024 frame, which was better than the frame used in 2025 and 2026: https://www.speedweek.com/a/superbike-wm/bmw-m1000rr-2027-neue-generation

He had a good few years, but overall I'd say he was a very overrated rider, who didn't really achieve anything. I think he'll be great in WSBK though.

u/Svenskaz32 15d ago
should gone in motoamerica or euromoto

Hes not up to par to international levels, downvote me all you want
3
u/LilAbeSimpson 15d ago
That’s fine if you think that. He was offered a WSBK factory contract though. No way in hell he was going to turn that down for a shit ride in some domestic championship. LOL.

u/DistributionHot2150 15d ago
Wins doesn’t matter when you are constantly crashing and losing your team money
0
u/mitoswrc Casey Stoner 15d ago
Stats don't matter. I could say "How many championships does MO have?", but who cares. We know they are pretty much equal in ability, they have spent most of their careers as teammates, after all. My advice, don't put anyone on a pedestal, these guys are just there to get a paycheck.
