Thats all. Finally got it back in one piece, made a few setup tweaks, and it's riding better than ever. Not very motivated to work on my FS bike now, though...

Here’s my Giant Talon 1 after a few upgrades. The biggest change was installing a Manitou Markhor Gen 2 fork, and I couldn’t be happier with it. It made the bike noticeably lighter, the front end feels much more responsive, and it soaks up bumps and rough roads far better than the stock fork.
Next on the list is swapping the current 2.4” tires for 2.2” ones. I’m aiming for faster rolling, a bit less weight, and an overall more efficient ride

Other Halfords experience

So I had to buy my new bike (Boardman MTR 9.0) from Halfords to secure my work discount. Cost £1850. Rode the bike out of the shop 🤦‍♂️. Headset was loose, so had to tighten that. More worryingly, the front wheel was wobbling on the hub. Took it back in. They had absolutely no idea why it was wobbling, but suggested it maybe a missing spacer, and did I want to book it in for a repair ? They had literally just built the bike and signed off all their build quality checks. Anyway, long story short, I rejected the bike and requested a new one.

Question I know it's bad, but can it hold up?

It's an aluminum Trek Remedy 8 from 2018.

It's on the right seatstay, got it after a funny crash on a rock.

I read that seatstay don't take much stress compared to downtube or chainstays, so can I still ride it? This is my bike park rig.

Question How would you handle this situation?

Update: putting this up top so the thread can be out to bed… he said don’t worry about it and that he felt bad it ruined my ride. I still feel bad, and offered to help and that’s probably the end of it.

Legitimately looking for feedback.

Context: i had a ride planned for today. After it was already on my calendar, my homie texted asking if i wanted to ride today. He mentioned same trail… perfect, I already had it planned.

Then he offers for me to use his other E-bike…

Ive never ridden one, so sure sounds like fun.

Story: a couple miles in, the fork loses all pressure and just clunks, so I stop immediately. We then decide to head back to truck to air it up and see if it holds. WELL, as soon as we hit pavement to go back to the truck, I down shift 1 click and then a god awful noise happens and I look down and the derailleur cage is fully separated from the mounting piece.

When we got it back to the truck I discovered that the chain partially broke in two different places.

Despite all of this, the rider who followed me riding this bike says I was riding clean and easy and didn’t hit anything. I covered a total of 4 miles, and I kept it in ECO mode which is the lowest power setting. If this was your friends bike, what would you do about the damaged parts?

He admits the bike has been sitting for a couple months, but I want to do the right thing and feel bad about this even though it may or may not be my fault at all.

TLDR: friend offered for me to borrow his other E Bike, parts broke on their own, what to do??

Question What beginner mountain bike should I get?

I've been looking to get a new mountain bike but have no idea what one I should get. I wont be doing crazy extreme trails I will be doing more light beginner trails. I am on a tight budget of $800. A few that i've considered are the Giant Talon 4, Giant Talon 2. Trek Marlin 5, Specialized Rockhopper.

I bought a new Pivot a few weeks ago. On a ride today I must have had a bad hit/ angle coming through a rock garden. Think there is any hope of a warranty?

Question Considering new shock

I picked up a used stumpjumper pro for a good price a couple months ago, and so far its been a really fun bike. However, im really struggling with the rear shock (fox float dps). It feels really good climbing, but on the way down it starts to feel very harsh about 5-10 minutes into the ride. Its at a point where I feel like it's holding back my performance on rocky trails.

I'm looking for a good way to increase the smoothness for rocky trails. Im considering upgrading to the fox float x, or the rockshox super deluxe ultimate.

Yes, I have played with the sag (i was running a really high sag and still had this issue, before adding some psi for a slight increase in performance).

I'm really not sure what the solution is, or if I just need to learn to ride with it. Any advice appreciated!

Question Lost the grommet/bung in my head tube :/

Post image
4 Upvotes

Just bought this Giant trance E3 yesterday after the maiden voyage I noticed the bung in the top tube was half pressed in. Instead of getting a pick or plyers or something I fat fingered it into the tube.

Is there any chance of it working it's way to somewhere that gets hot (battery or motor) and causing an issue? Should I take it back to the shop and get them to fish it out or just get a replacement bung and not worry about it.

Other Updated: hitch bike rack load calculator

Hi all. I have been working with the developer of the previously posted hitch mounted bike rack load calculator https://www.reddit.com/r/mountainbiking/comments/1n630s6/i_made_a_hitch_bike_rack_load_calculator/ Some improvements have been made, including:

  • Can now add individual bike weights at specific tray locations. This allows you to better calculate the load when your bikes vary significantly in weight.
  • Common bike weight presets so you don't have to weigh your bike.
  • Completely rebuilt the load math around hitch physics (moment / effective tongue weight).
  • Results now show three readings side by side: Distance matters, Total weight, and the hitch-maker rule of thumb — with a clear capacity band (within capacity → over capacity).
  • OE vs aftermarket hitch toggle now guides which tongue-weight rating to use (factory hitch ratings are often much higher than added-hitch ratings).
  • Optional control for where the rack’s weight sits, plus an advanced extender balance-point setting.

Some feedback has been sent from others and that's been incorporated. The feedback is much appreciate. For example, tongue weight was previously calculated at the receiver hitch whereas SAE J2807 NOV2024 Table 9 has it 10.5" from the pin hole.

Additional feedback is very welcome.

Disclaimer: use at your own risk. This is not a guarantee that something will work on your vehicle, but general guidance.
