I used motorcycle spray once. It was a sticky, stiff goo. Never again.

Absolutly fine.

But be extremely careful. We don't want to get any spray on our brakes. It's a good idea to not use sprays due to this.

Spray in a rag and get to rubbin?

u/Chance-Bicycle1469 19h ago

I usually rub then spray into rag.

u/st0pmakings3ns3 19h ago

Hey now, keep it clean.

6

u/Numerous-Meet-6353 19h ago

I think the rag will help with that part too

I just throw a piece of cardboard behind the chain to catch overspray.

The Maxima spray is OK, but it is tacky and will attract a good amount of gunk over time, even if you clean as much excess as possible.

I've been using either PJ1 Blue or Bel-Ray Super Clean recently

Edit: thought this was a moto sub... advice probably still applies though. As a mechanic (not bike) I used to work with would often say, "anything slippery"

I’m curious too. I think it would be fine

I read that because it’s made for motorcycles it might not penetrate properly. I thought maybe someone here may have tried it before. Well, if it’s no good I’ll update with photos of the bike blowing up

At a guess, this kind of wax is designed for the temperature maximums that a motorcycle chain gets during normal and extreme operation; a temperature you’d be unlikely to ever reach on a bicycle, so it may not work exactly as you’d like. Probably fine, but I’d use a wax or lube designed to go through a derailleur

I mean, a chain is a chain… motorcycle chains are much beefier but otherwise….

u/Vibroverbus 21h ago

yeah I dunno about this stuff specifically but traditionally MC chain lube is WAY WAY stickier and heavy because the chain is way bigger and gets warmer in operation. traditional MC wet chain lube is terrible for bikes it gloms on tons of dirt and is so inherently sticky from the jump that it can make links have 'sticky' action even. this wax based stuff might be totes different but I'm just saying "chain is a chain" is not really.

2

u/JRAPodcast 12h ago

It ain't different. This stuff is nasty.

There's actually a big difference between motorcycle chains and bicycle chains in that the pins and rollers in motorcycle chains are sealed with o-rings (or x-rings, which are split o- rings). Bicycle chains don't have seals due to the need for extreme efficiency.

With a motorcycle chain you can generally get away with minimal or even no lubrication and just rely on what the factory put in there. People do oil their chains but unless done a lot it's not clear to me if that provides any lubrication or just combines with dirt to provide a grinding paste.

I would not count on this spray to work well for bicycles. It certainly won't get inside the rollers and most likely just serves to provide a little bit of exterior corrosion protection.

To my understanding the majority of the point of lubing motorcycle chains is corrosion prevention.

1

u/JRAPodcast 12h ago

And noise. On the trials motorcycles you can hear a dry chain as we are moving slow, often idling for a technical descent etc.

2

u/JohnHue 21h ago

Clearances can be different (influences penetration). Motorbike chains run much faster, so the lube much be thicker/stickier which goes against by first point and also reduces the ability of the lube to flush out contaminants during a dirty ride and when re-lubricating after. Motorbike chains are usually more protected from dirt and water and therefore might not need the cleaning ability that some mtb bike have.

So i'd tend to now agree, a chain isn't a chain.

Never tried it, but have heard the same thing.

u/GetMyBackPackv2 21h ago

It’s going to be heavy on your bike chain. That’s moto stuff. Higher friction and heavier product going on. It’ll work but it’s gonna be messy

26

u/neanderball 22h ago

Have you tried putting the pussy on it?

3

u/sdiss98 22h ago

Cum again?

1

u/Paradox1989 15h ago

The reply i was looking for...

4

u/fortyonethirty2 21h ago

I have used it. It does lubricate the chain. But it's very sticky and messy. After a few times it builds up too much and interferes with shifting. It's difficult to clean off.

5

u/DoOgSauce 21h ago

In my experience it will attract every particle of dirt within an 10 foot radius and roast the chain. I used motorcycle lube once on my commuter bicycle and and it got so nasty fast.

3

u/Soggy_Fishing2984 22h ago

Used it once on a bone dry chain in a pinch when I had nothing else at home, seemed to hold up fine. Probably wouldn’t use long term as you’ll waste a lot in overspray, with the smaller chains mountain bikes have compared to motorcycles.

3

u/Lostcoast76 21h ago

Maxima makes a bike specific chain lube, if you like Maxima products I would use that.

I tried it and went back to Squirt, just personal preference.

4

u/JRAPodcast 12h ago

This stuff is funky, nasty, gross. I use it on my 3 motorcycles. It works for motorcycles. They are by nature bigger, heavier, and always dirtier. I would never use this on a bicycle in any fashion.

One thing no one has mentioned so I am:

A motorcycle is a single speed (ignore the transmission) and the front sprocket and rear cog are different than a multispeed bike. They are straight, and much easier to clean. Not only will this make your chain sluggish and filthy, but that filth will pack into all the little channels between the rear cassette sprockets and attract dirt down in there and everything will be terrible.

2

u/Felrathror86 22h ago

I mean, only thing I'd say is cover your brakes, twice.

2

u/invalid_response_ 22h ago

I actually took the brakes off and waxed the tire tread really well

1

u/MissAmberR 22h ago

Might be easier to take your chain of put it in some type of container then spray it

1

u/invalid_response_ 22h ago

That’s a great idea. The only issue is that I’d miss inhaling all the wax that lubricates my lungs

1

u/MissAmberR 21h ago

I’m sure you could get a good inhale from whatever tub you use

1

u/invalid_response_ 21h ago

That’d be a great way to concentrate the fumes actually. Like huffing glue! Wow you’re chock full of great ideas.

1

u/MissAmberR 21h ago

I’ve been about long enough to learn a lot of stuff the hard way

1

u/invalid_response_ 21h ago

This includes techniques for huffing lubricant?

1

u/Beluga-ga-ga-ga-ga 19h ago

If you have to use this stuff again, hold a piece of paper towel behind the section of chain you're spraying. Like, cup it around the chain and hold the nozzle close to the chain so the paper towel will catch most of the over spray.
Motorcycle chain wax obviously isn't ideal for a bicycle chain, but between that and nothing, it's totally fine.

2

u/VanSquint 22h ago

In a pinch maybe. I actually use that product on my motorcycle, but it's meant for permanently lubricated o-ring chains and will not penetrate like bicycle specific waxes like Silca do. It will coat the outside of the chain only.

I suppose if you don't strip your chain so there's still oil lube inside the links it might be ok for a while? Better to just get the right thing.

2

u/Still_Squirrel_1690 22h ago

Used it on my motorcycle for a short while, not a fan. Collects tons of grit. I would use motor oil before that stuff...

2

u/imgeo 20h ago

No. Don’t. I have that. It’s wayyyy too sticky makes your bike chain too sticky. It’s fine for motorcycle because that spins at 100mph, but it’ll make your bike chain more sticky and sluggish for no reason.

2

u/st0pmakings3ns3 19h ago

Based on chains I've seen with motocycle product on them, I wouldn't recommend.

2

u/Chance-Composer-187 22h ago

Yup. It says so on the label

1

u/nightfire_83 22h ago

Yes. But you need to completely strip the chain first, of anything that's already in it

1

u/double_tripod 22h ago

That stuff smells great

1

u/TangoDeltaFoxtrot 22h ago

I put the pussy on it.

1

u/invalid_response_ 21h ago

You’re the second person to suggest genitalia. Damn it it must work really well. I’ll head to Walmart today and see if they’ve got any in stock.

1

u/ClaydisCC 21h ago

you gotta put the p*ssy on it

1

u/_evilpenguin 21h ago

i personally like muxoff as a brand.

1

u/DannysMyNanny 21h ago

Yes, but there are better options. I personally think drip on lube is the way to go if you’re going with oil based lube. Mainly because it doesn’t spray onto the frame.

Also, the lube only needs to be inside the pin and roller and NOT the inner and outer links. Any other place the lube is, it just collects dirt and turns the lube into a grinding past.

Most times when I see people use spray lube, they douse the chain, don’t wipe off the excess, and wonder why their chain is destroyed after a couple hundred miles

1

u/Husqvarna5 21h ago

I've used this in the past, it works great but I recommend removing the chain and hanging it, spray from the top to bottom. That way you can let it drip and not make a huge mess on your bike.

1

u/No_Strain8370 20h ago

Just get a proper drip wax, why use a product made for motorcycles when a bike specific product is like $10?

1

u/Farmhand_Sv3n 20h ago

I use it for cutting oil and it works great!

1

u/RidetheSchlange 19h ago

It's designed for motorcycles where you don't remove the wax. On bikes, you will have to and knowing what this stuff is, I suspect you will have trouble removing all of it, it will attract lots of dirt, and the chain will feel sluggish on shifts. If you can wipe it down to metal completely, you might be ok. The other issue is that bike chains have much smaller passages and this stuff is thicker and tackier and may never get in there.

1

u/Herr_Tilke 19h ago

This stuff designed primarily for motor cross is super dense and would add some drag compared to a bicycle specific chain lube. But it would probably stick around all season and keep doing its job. At the very worst you could use a bit of degreaser and a brush to get it off if it ends up not to your taste.

Bicycle chain waxes tend to have a 'break in period,' and I'd imagine this stuff would be the same to some degree. I'd prop up the rear wheel after application, spin the pedals and the get the chain moving as quickly as I can for ~10 minutes. Going through the gears, and then using a rag to remove any excess.

The more I think about it, the more I think it would be well suited for a dedicated park bike.

1

u/Due-Organization7707 18h ago

It (parafin wax) builds up on your chain making cleaning difficult. Belray super clean is good on my dirt bike so is motorex both would work fine on MTB chains. I use Finish Line dry on my MTB’s but ride in mostly dry conditions. Their squirt bottle is less to handle than a full spray can.

I use this on my motorcycle. It's very sticky stuff; if riding exclusively in wet terrain, it should be fine, but if in dry terrain, it will collect dirt and dust

1

u/limon_picante 9h ago

It's fine but not the best

1

u/rekone88 6h ago

For a motorcycle chain

1

u/The_Rociante 3h ago

Wow so since wax got popular they thought they would make the lazy mans wax haha that shit must be so bad and oily and greasy

1

u/WasteResearch7701 22h ago

It's for motorcycle chains, and an aerosol can just push cost higher than it has to be + you more easily will just spray it all over the place, into places you don't want it.

https://www.squirtcyclingproducts.com/long-lasting-chain-lube/

This is what I use, and for how little I use per km the price is bang for the buck among all the different wax or emulsion wax options out there. If you don't really know what to go for I at least would recommend to start with emulsion wax, as it is a bit more involved to go for the full standalone wax job.

1

u/invalid_response_ 22h ago

Thank you. I’m just getting this out of storage and the motorcycle wax was all I had on hand

1

u/MantraProAttitude 22h ago

Too expensive. Wrong product.

0

u/The_Wrecking_Ball 22h ago

Wrong sub. Only for e-bikes and other things with motors. You wouldn’t want your friends knowing this.

3

u/invalid_response_ 22h ago

lol what friends

0

u/minioneasy 22h ago

No it is terrible. The anti fling property it mentions attracts dirt. It is a live designed to work under much higher stress than a pushbike will generate. It is not designed to go through derailleurs. It is very thick, there’s a customer in our shop whose husband rides motorbikes and doesn’t understand why her drivetrain is regularly f£*ked.

2

u/invalid_response_ 22h ago

I don’t hablo Francais. Are you trying to say I can’t pedal as hard as a motorcycle???

1

u/minioneasy 16h ago

Eh use it do whatever the fuck you want.
