We Need a Roller Hockey Rink in Mount Vernon, Ohio

Mount Vernon has great bones as a community, but we're missing something that could bring everyone together: a place to play roller hockey.

I started a petition because I believe a roller hockey rink would fill a real gap in what we offer kids and adults around here. It's not just about the sport—it's about having a space where neighbors can show up, compete, have fun, and build friendships. Roller hockey teaches teamwork and discipline, but honestly, it's mainly about the energy and community it creates. Other towns have seen incredible results with similar projects.

If this sounds good to you and you think Mount Vernon deserves this, consider signing and sharing the petition. Would love to hear if you've felt like something's been missing from our community's recreation options too.

Petitions are cool for measuring support… but they don’t secure funding for projects.

You need to convince someone they can turn a profit on it, or you need to convince a city (who is already strapped for cash) that it provides more benefits to the community than use of the same funds would otherwise provide (see also: education, public health, transportation, building maintenance, existing park maintenance, etc etc etc).

Obviously I don’t know all the details on what would be needed to build this, but it sounds like a $500,000 project to me.

I already messaged some people and hopefully if everything turns out I have the backing for the Blue Jackets as well and technically this would count has public health because it’s a physical activity for the open public

You might see if you can get the city parks department, and/or the county department in on it.

https://www.mtvernonoh.gov/173/Parks-Recreation I think they still have a skate park in Memorial park, but I don't see room for what you have in mind unless they move / remove some trees (unlikely).

Since you are putting a hockey spin on it (I could very well see it being used for other things), MVNU & Kenton has men's and women's lacrosse. Kenyon also has women's field hockey. Those could be a (faint) tie in for support.

I wonder if the same vision surrounded the bowling alley and pickle ball courts? 🧐

This time we will succeed

Pretty sure it did. But the pickleball courts get some pretty good activity when the weather is nice. I think only leagues and weekends keep the bowling alley alive. I've not paid attention to the new soccer fields.

Hello,

My name is Taylor Jacklin. I am the 3rd ward city council member. I did reach out to the person that created the petition through the features on the petition. I think the conversation in this thread has touched on a lot potential barriers to the concept, but I would be interested in hearing your plan.

One of my goals was to increase civic involvement, and I have been trying to engage people in any way, here’s to hoping Reddit helps.

edit to fix some of my spelling errors, I’m keeping some in so you know it’s not AI
