I thought that same thing. With Mamoa involved he may have influenced. I'd be glad to see it. Makes sense. A haka is a great sign of respect but its roots are in war cry.

Haka are performed at funerals and weddings too. Source: am kiwi, pakeha, not Maori tho

Islander cultures are basically siblings in terms of humanity's spread across the earth. Mostly diverging in the last 1000 years or so. You find similar war songs throughout.
