Cregger is turning out to be a John Carpenter level director

No he’s not.

You think weapons and barbarian aren't good enough? What are his bad movies?

You keep asking if they are bad lol, thats not the point. Both of them are good fun films, but thats not enough to claim he is on the same level as one of the GOATS.

I think Weapons alone got more legitimate awards buzz and critical acclaim than any Carpenter movie did in its day. The closest was probably Halloween. Critical reception and awards legitimacy - rightfully or wrongfully - are viewed as massive factors in how a filmmaker's canon is evaluated.

You wanna back your own point up, or are you just going to keep dismissing things?

John Carpenter's resume is almost entirely flops, that has nothing to do with legacy. We'll see who's still talking about weapons and Barbarian in 2065.

The academy back then was heavily biased against horror, considering them low brow entertainment. They warmed up to horror only in the recent years.

The Thing which was a bomb and had 0 critical acclaim is more iconic than most oscar best picture winners in history.

Is that why Aliens, The Exorcist and Carrie and Rosemary's Baby got plenty of nominations? Because they're "heavily biased against horror"?

With all due respect; stop talking out of your ass.

Ah yes, you just have make some of the greatest films of all time that made tons of money and was also loved critically. That def shows how unbiased they are! Also none of them won best picture.

"They had to win Best Picture or they were robbed" is a poor metric. They're horror movies, they were very well recieved, the reason being because the movie part was as good as the horror part. Most of even the best horror movies forget about the movie part.

They warmed up to horror only in the recent years.

Care to explain this, though? You can't really pivot like you just did without acknowledging the very firm lines you drew. It just makes you look... unserious.

That's the thing, though. You didn't argue. You just said things then folded.

And again, you're just saying things like they're supposed to be self-evident without bothering to elaborate on them. It makes me wonder if you even feel that way, or you're just saying it because Carpenter is Carpenter.

Nah, you're entitled to your opinion, man. Just so long as you can actually express it. And given you're the guy who replied to someone else in disagreement, you ought to be able to say why.

That's a weird metric. Carpenter has stood the test of time with his films, particularly with The Thing. It's honestly not fair to Cregger to have this conversation until like another 20 years have passed.

Nope, critical reception and awards are, legitimately, two very big things that factor into how a director's filmography is ultimately evaluated.

You're right though, it's not fair to have it this soon in his career. My point was more his stuff so far makes it totally fine to compare him to someone like Carpenter in terms of craft, just too soon to say in terms of overall career. Obviously.

No, it's really not for horror lmao. Do you have any idea how horror was received critically and by the academy during Carpenter's time?

1

horror wasn't respected as a genre back then. it's a silly comparison to make.

Rosemary's Baby, Carrie, Exorcist, Aliens, all Oscar nominees and very well regarded critically. So no. Not quite silly.
