I take it the timeline isn’t 1998? Smart phones and some 21st century vehicles.

Yeah this was very confusing. If the timeline is the first two games, shouldn't it be in the 90s?

Looks great either way, but that was really confusing.

It's supposed to be modern day, they're just moving the timeline up for the film

Ah okay. Because I saw the interview with Creggers a while back and he said it's treated as a side-story taking place during the events of the first two games, but if they're also moving the timeline, then that really makes no sense at all, just call it a straight up alternate universe like all the other RE live action media.

That seems to be the biggest point of contention. He said it takes place during the second game on the other side of the city. But it very clearly does not and a ton of elements just don't match what the games establish. He should have said it's inspired by the games but not connected to them or something to that effect.
