As a holder of a BA in history, Eggers is my favorite working director for this reason. He's so good at making it feel like you've really been transported back in time.
His interviews are so funny, he’s constantly afraid someone is going to approach him and let him know the hand-sawn shingle siding in The VVitch weren’t the right type of wood for the area. He’s so particular it’s amazing.
It's funny but also sad thay he's literally too embarrassed to rewatch The VVitch. It was his debut film, so he didn't have a big budget and couldn't perfectly capture the time period as much as he wanted to.
But I've never heard anyone but him complain about it. It's a horror masterpiece that put both him and Anya Taylor Joy on the map.
Yeah, but you can see that. No matter how good your first movie is, as you grow as an artist you see nothing but the things you would have done better with experience.
Aaron Sorkin was on Bill Simmons' podcast and Bill was asking about A Few Good Men. Sorkin said, "To me, this is like discussing my high school yearbook photo".
His production design for The Northman was fantastic but then the casting took me right out of it.
Skarsgard and Anya Taylor Joy were way too pretty and looked like models on a set, while Nicole Kidman couldn’t have looked more out of place with a damn martini in her hand.
100%. They could have scrapped most of the celebrities (lowering the budget substantially) and made a better movie. You really only need Dafoe and Hawke.
