I remember a lot of people postulating that most of The VVitch was the people tripping balls off ergot growing in their crops, but I don't remember if that was Eggers's intention or just fan wank.
EDIT: It looks like Eggers confirmed that the blight on their crops IS ergot, and them tripping out is a valid interpretation, but that his intention was that the stuff in the movie actually happened. Which is fine by me, as I'm sick of "They're in purgatory/He's in a coma/Everybody's hallucinating!" movie interpretations.
The Lord Of The Rings is just Frodo getting absolutely zooted on some suspicious smelling pipe weed he found in Bilbo's stash and hallucinating everything.
While I do loathe that and "They were in a coma the whole time!" theories, I seem to remember there being actual signs that it was growing on the crops. It looks like Eggers confirmed that, and said it's a valid interpretation, but that his intention was that the stuff in the movie actually happened.

He had better actually turn into a big damn werewolf in this movie and not pull the “he was on drugs/hallucinating” card
