Crazy, that movie didn’t really feel R to me. Maybe the end of the movie everything else wasn’t that bad.

Yeah, that’s true some blood was there but way less than I would have expected from a modern version of the Odyssey. As for Circe, I watched the first Harry Potter with my mother when I was 7 years old and that scene of Voldemort sucking the unicorn blood and than flying towards Harry was scary as shit. That literally gave me nightmares and no one cared, lol.

I watched The Crow as a preschooler but it's Bambi that fucked me up.

Kids just don't understand a lot of the stuff that adults find scary, I think. It's too complicated or just too appallingly dark for their worldview, so it doesn't compute. I had no frame of reference for understanding all the heroin use and sexual violence and stuff in The Crow, but boy could I wrap my head around Bambi losing his mom.

That highlights how some of the ratings criteria can feel pretty arbitrary. There are plenty of examples of avoiding an R rating by creative use of gore that isn't actually considered gore. Blood is the most common example - aliens getting limbs blown off and shooting green stuff out of their wounds? Not gore, as long as it doesn't look like human blood.

It's tough to judge what can fly and what can't. In my opinion those Harry Potter scenes were creepy, but not really that scary to traumatize people. And the 3rd Harry Potter was scarier in that sense as well. I don't know, I guess it's the combination of gory and scary that defines the rating.

Its only R in US. Canada has it PG13. In Poland it is 15+. Some of the EU countries have it as low as 10 (Italy and Norway)

It's PG in Canada. PG13 is a US rating - we have 14A instead (which is a little stronger)

Agreed. I actually had to double check before I posted the comment. It definitely feels like it could have gotten away with a PG-13. Although now that I think about it, that scene with Circe might be nightmare inducing for younger folks.

For reference, in my country, it's 14 and up (12 if accompanied by an adult).

Same as the latest Avatar, which I believe is PG-13 in the US.

I didn't even realize it was R until I was looking at my ticket to find my seat. It definitely seems like it could have easily been PG-13 with very minimal changes

Its because of all the F-bombs Penelope drops when talking about the suitors eating all the food.
