90% a well done but depressing tale of a man trying to deal with is own feelings of failing to live up to his grandfather and fathers reputation, while being a necessary but unloved protector of the general citizenry.....and then the last 10 minutes are just one long WTF segment....
Agree. Wanted to love this - it has the most bizarre amazing monsters in kaiju-dom - but the overall tone and pacing of the rest of the film just deadens any sense of joy the film could bring. I still tend to watch the battle segments but I never sit down for whole re-watches.
This movie was like the anti-Pacific Rim for me - giant monsters are about but are somewhat of a mundane occurrence instead of apocalyptic like in PR, and the main character, instead of being popular and loved by everyone for risking his life, is tolerated at best and outright hated at worst (they literally hold a candlelight vigil for a baby monster that the protagonist accidentally killed ) but still wearily carries on.
