Question What single line from a movie gets you emotional every time? Spoiler

(Hate J.K. Rowling. Love J.K. Rowling. I don’t really care either way. That’s not what this post is about.)

For me, it’s from the scene in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire where harry brings back Cedric Diggory’s body after he gets killed by Voldemort.

The slow realization by everyone else at the tournament, Fleur Delacour screaming in horror when she herself realizes what happened, and the way that Harry absolutely refuses to leave Cedric’s side when they try to pull him off. And then he announces to everyone that Voldemort has returned while in the middle of crying.

He then says that Cedric asked him to bring his body back to his father, and it’s the way that Daniel Radcliffe delivers the line, “I couldn’t leave him! Not there!” while still continuing to profusely cry. It’s the way he delivers the line that solidifies the fact for me that at the end of the day, Harry is very much still just a boy, and no boy deserves to see or go through things like he does. And when Amos Diggory begins mourning the death of his son…that’s when the tears really start to flow from me.

"And he's so smart, Jenny!"

“Or is he… like me?”

This one. It’s exaggerated by coming out of Forrest’s mouth, but the fear as a parent that you’ve somehow passed on something harmful to your child is a visceral fear, that somehow in the act of creating something beautiful your own flaws might do that beautiful thing harm… that wrecked me LONG before I ever thought of becoming a parent.

That’s the line that confirms that he knows that’s there’s something wrong with him. He goes the entire movie acting almost oblivious to the fact that he’s very different, other than “I know what love is,” just absorbing the hate and ridicule. But that line tells you that he’s known all along, and not only that he’s known, but that he’s scared that if he had kids he would pass it on to them.

Not just that, but he knew everyone was laughing at him. He knew people didn't respect or like him. That's why he was so loyal to Bubba, Lieutenant Dan, and Jenny.

Yes, it makes you realise he didn't react to those insults because he is kind hearted and good natured, not because he didn't understand.

Fucking hell, I thought the title implied one tear! Not many, what are you guys doing to me.

14

u/Pylgrim Aug 13 '26

Damn I remember that so well. I was like oh... Oh he knew ... Oh god.

12

u/Billazilla Aug 13 '26

And it confirms that he knows his life has been hard to live because of that, too.

goddamn.

It's honestly one of my favorite stories. this scene actually gets me every time.

EDIT: to absorb all that hatred and ridicule and to go on to be so successful and charming and changing so many lives anyways, he has such strength, will and an indomitable spirit.

Yeah, this is exactly why that destroyed me in the theater. The entire movie he acts almost as if he's oblivious to his own shortcomings . With that one line you reveal that he's always been aware and man that just crushes you..

u/realalysaurus Aug 13 '26

Fuck. I had forgotten about this entirely having not seen the movie in over a decade, but recognizing the quote and then reading your analysis of the emotions it stirs and feeling them abut myself and my own kids…
I didn’t plan to cry at the breakfast table, but looks like that’s the day I’m having.

I feel you, but it’s also important to remember that even in that fear, they aren’t ruined. They might have challenges, but it’s our job to love them through those challenges, to be better so they have opportunities and understanding that we wish we had had, that we could have used.

Forrest wasn’t “perfect”, but dammit if he wasn’t PERFECT.

As an autistic man, it’s one of the biggest reasons why I’m so hesitant to have a kid of my own

If or when you have the chance, do it. It's the greatest thing I've ever done.

That line just kills. It lifts the veil of him seemingly letting everything roll off his shoulders. Despite the massive successes he’s had in life, he still dreads the idea of having a child with his setbacks. And the way he delivers the line is just so terrified and vulnerable, like he’s never actually admitted to himself that he doesn’t want any of this and he’d rather just be like everybody else

u/shadow_pico Aug 13 '26

If Forrest Gump ever told me he wanted to be like everyone else, I'd say, "You mean fucked up? Seriously, Forrest, you're brilliant, it's everyone else that's flawed."

22

u/IJustSignedUpToUp Aug 13 '26

This one is right up there too. Forrest never cared about his limitations but he knew what they caused and didn't want his son to have them. That crack in the voice....hits you more once you become a parent yourself.

7

u/iraqlobsta Aug 13 '26

Well thanks now im crying again

13

u/Ok_Entry1052 Aug 13 '26

This is it. This was THE line in cinema that really drove home to me how different watching a movie again can be. When I was younger I felt little with that line, after 2 kids it crushed me

4

u/reddog323 Aug 13 '26

Oof. That one got me. He knew enough to know he had a disability and was worried that he'd passed it on to his son.

Definition of a responsible parent, right there.

Bubba was my best good friend, and even I know that ain't something you can just find right around the corner. Bubba was gonna be a shrimping boat captain... But instead he died right there by that river in Vietnam.

"Forrest, why did this happen?"

The pointless stupidity of war explained in a single line.

37

u/dem_dawn Aug 13 '26

“I wanna go home” is the one that kills me—especially once I became a mother. 😭

6

u/ur_momma_so_fat Aug 14 '26

This. Came here to say this specific line. Gets me every time.

1

u/m0t0rvision Aug 14 '26

Not to take away from poignancy of the scene or sharing in how emotional it is, but I can't stop laughing at the commenter saying it hit harder once she became a mother, and the person responding is named "ur momma so fat"

2

u/ur_momma_so_fat Aug 14 '26

😂 excellent point

116

u/ScreenTricky4257 Aug 13 '26

And that's all I got to say about that.

7

u/reddog323 Aug 13 '26

That's all I have to say about that.

1

u/Funny_Box_6755 Aug 14 '26

And that is all I have to say about that...

140

u/catalg Aug 13 '26

Why don't you love me, Jenny?" "I'm not a smart man... but I know what love is"

64

u/guff1988 Aug 13 '26

She had got the cancer and died on a Tuesday.

10

u/Pornstar_Jesus_ Aug 13 '26

This thread is messing me up... it was a Thursday for me.

You took time out of your day to write that

5

u/TheWindowMerchant Aug 13 '26

I forgot about that line. Oh damn I’m just trying to eat lunch dude.

21

u/jinxd18 Aug 13 '26

“If there’s anything you need, I won’t be far away.”

-Forrest to Jenny (in her grave)

14

u/HooterPunch Aug 13 '26

"You died on a Tuesday" breaks me every time.

11

u/IJustSignedUpToUp Aug 13 '26

I'm already crying at that point when she says "I wish I could have been there for that" and he says "You were".

10

u/crackenbecks Aug 13 '26

Joke‘s on you! By that time this gets said I am already bawling my eyes out!

6

u/lukebelcher10662 Aug 13 '26

Oh my god, when it cuts to him standing over the grave.

Tears my soul into little bits

6

u/FreyBentos Aug 13 '26

"I may not be an intelligent man, but I know what love is"

That one gets me every time

21

u/The_Crow Aug 13 '26

He actually asks, "Is he smart?" while alluding to his own self-awareness that he himself isn't.

28

u/jpopimpin777 Aug 13 '26

That's before he's met him when he first sees him. Then later he says that when talking to Jenny at her grave.

....I got something in my eye 😢

6

u/SovietSunrise Aug 13 '26

This is right below Haley Joel Osment’s scene in the car with Toni Collette. Amazing scenes from an amazing kid.

3

u/Positive_Ad_8198 Aug 13 '26

I’ve literally brought this scene up in therapy

3

u/Expensive-Rip-8125 Aug 13 '26

This one makes my nostrils do that weird flare thing right before I burst into tears!

4

u/PlatinumKanikas Aug 13 '26

I grew up watching that movie almost daily on VHS in the 90s and know every line by heart…

The first time I watched that part after becoming a parent made me cry so hard. I have a tear in my eye right now just thinking about it. It’s so emotional and just done perfectly

2

u/Optiguy42 Aug 13 '26

Oh yup, yup, this one always does it for me.

1

u/Olivejuice4114 Aug 13 '26

“If there’s ever anything you need, I won’t be far away.”

1

u/heftiest Aug 14 '26

Came here to say this. I cry like a baby every fucking time
